One of my favorite grocery stores and a true Utica quintessential family run grocery store. While they have modernized the store it gives off vibes from the 1950's. Love that this store has a large selection of Utica food products made by small businesses in the Utica/New Hartford/Rome area. I come when I have not gotten around to making it to the local bakeries before they closed. This time with the Labor Day Holiday the fresh Italian bread selection from our area bakeries was pretty picked over. They usually have several racks of bread from 3 to 5 local bakeries (Big O's, Napoli's, Salvatore's). Chanatry's is known not only for their large selection of local products but also their meat department, deli, and of course the opportunity to get a selfie with the Pope. Service here is very reminiscent of the 50's vibe. Lines are short and move. Baggers are readily available, butcher is available later than other stores. Truly one of my favorite stores. read more

Chanatry's is a great local Supermarket native to the Utica Area. They have a lot of local products that you would not find at the other area chain grocery stores. Come here to find those specialty products and fresh foods, but for regular shopping their prices might be a bit higher. Upon arrival you will find a spacious and newly paved parking lot which is kept clean. Entering the store you will instantly see small displays of local goodies. I picked up some of the "Its a Utica Thing" vodka riggies sauce. The produce section is small but the items are fresh! There is an aisle adjacent to the produce full of special marinades and sauces. Here you will find the famous Lupos speedie marinade, Dinosaur BBQ sauces, and so much more! Head behind this to the bakery for your Italian pusties (pastaciotti) and some sensational pies. We tried the strawberry rhubarb and were pleasantly surprised. Venturing through the rest of the store we got some handmade Dino's meatballs to go with Manicotti. On the way out don't forget your Utica coffee! The store is clean and organized, the only downside I found was several items we were about to buy were actually expired. Chanatry's is an interesting place. I think it's just the original Utica Supermarket and it tries tis best to live up to it. The prices seem fine, not amazingly cheap and not excessive. Mostly the only reason I could see for going here specifically is how hard it leans into Utica, which is always fun. Pretty much all the local Utica things are here in spades. They even do tie ins from local restaurants and sell things like spice mixes from certain places, which is a cool idea. Otherwise I don't see Chanatry's wanting for lack of stock so there's nothing wrong with it at all. So regular shopping plus a little extra local charm. read more

This store engages in deceitful practices to charge you a premium fir sub quality items. I was looking for a nice ribeye, and I actually used to work here almost 20 years ago. I just moved back to the area so I went to check it out. Ribeyes being sold as Delmonico steaks. For 18.99lb. Ribeyes sell in other stores for 15.99lb, but by calling them delmonico, which there are only 2 on each ribloin, they can charge more because a delmonico is a stake in shirt supply compared to the rib-eye (4 delmonico per cow on average, vs 30 average ribeyes per cow.). If they are doing this shadowy business here, you can garauntee they are pulling this with their seafood, and quite possible produce by mislabeling as organic when it's not. This place is shaded as hell. read more

This store is big and busy. The selection of items seems fresh meaning a good turn around of product. The meat and FISH counters were happening! Lots of customers means they like the product and selection of products. The aisles are packed with food on the shelves and displays on the floors. There's even a large area for folks to but their lotto games. I only went in to grab ingredients for our lasagna dinner but will definitely go back to explore! read more

For Thanksgiving this year, our family decided to purchase one of their prepared meals instead of trying to cook it ourselves. It isn't that we don't know how to cook a turkey or even want to, but we were gathering together in Utica from all across NY and the logistics were difficult. So, we ordered their meal in advance which included Turkey, gravy, mashed red potatoes, bread stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Based on a previous issue with a Price Chopper prepared Thanksgiving dinner in which everything was still frozen on Thanksgiving day when we went to pick it up, we asked for clarification and were told that everything was precooked and would be thawed for us. So, a simple reheat and eat. Upon picking up the box of food around 1PM on Thanksgiving, we found the turkey completely frozen! The first direction on the label said to thaw in the refridgerator for 2 days. This didn't make sense at all. Chanatry's knew we were getting on Thursday to eat on Thursday, so why didn't they thaw it 2 days before? Or, why didn't they warn us that it would be frozen still on Thanksgiving? Needless to say, this was the second time we had fallen for this trap (we picked Chanatry's over PC this year to avoid it) and we were dumbfounded. So, we had no choice but to thaw the turkey in the oven for about 45 minutes, then slice off whatever was possible to be cut and reheat only that in a separate dish for another 30 or so minutes. It is hard to imagine something "ruining" Thanksgiving dinner, but they did it. They either made a mistake in not thawing the turkey 2 days before, or intentionally lied to us when we asked if it would be ready to eat on Thanksgiving. However it played out, we will not be doing this again. As a review for the sides, they were decent. I really liked the stuffing (because it got so crunchy from sitting in the oven while the turkey warmed up) and the cranberry sauce/relish was to die for. I would buy that again in a heartbeat. As for the pumpkin pie... they had mistakenly given it to someone else so they gave us an Apple and a lemon crunch pie to replace it. The lemon pie was horrid, and we didn't touch the apple because we had made one already from scratch. Disappointing! read more

I live way down at the beginning of the road - Mile Marker 0 in Key West - but every year return to my roots in the Utica area. And the first place I make tracks for is Chanatry's! Why? I could say the real meat-market counter. Or the fresh seafood (and for someone from Key West, that is praise indeed). Or the great herb/spice selection. Or the deli (yes, they have thuringer!). Or the cheeses (multi-year aged cheddar anyone?). My brothers and I have all come to the conclusion that if we still lived in Utica we would be obese, all from the temptations at Chanatry's, where the prices make good food too easily purchased. I commend their website and follow the drop-down menus to their weekly ads - the most densely packed supermarket ads I have ever seen, which tells you how many special there are any week. Right now I am in my final 3 week countdown to being back at Chanatry's and I am already salivating over their homemade Italian sausage. Enough said. read more

Chanatry's has been a go-to store for my family for many years. It does carry several products and varieties of items that are not sold elsewhere. Their homemade Italian sausage and Utica burgers are especially good also. I also have to say that their fish fries are huge and some of the best in the region. I especially like the fish with the coconut in the breading. The only reason I not giving this store 5 stars is because many of their items are really overpriced. If you need to get specialty and unique items, this place offers a lot. However, ordinary items, such as condiments and baking items, are much higher in price that at other stores. read more

I go to Chanatry's because of the meat counter. The meat is not prepackaged like at most places; you actually choose what you want at the counter and they pack it for you. Chicken breast for $1.99/pound? Yes, thank you! They also have a large variety of italian products. I find their prices to be on the high side. read more

I always enjoyed shopping at Chanatrys but had a dissapointing experience on our last trip. We were charged $5.59 for a product that we did not pick up on a $72.00 order. Went back next day to point out their mistake and they claim after a long delay of going over their camera tapes we had gotten the product.
