Alright, so this is going to be a review of the ASAT and COS programs, since those are the ones I attended. When I came to Chapel Haven, my plan was to take the 2 year program and then leave for college. Well, by the end of those two years, I decided to stay in the area and continue receiving services. And now, after 6 years of living in this state, my physical and mental health are at the worst that they have ever been. Before Chapel Haven, I would have never dreamed of harming myself. About 4 years ago, I tried cutting my face. My weight is the highest it's ever been, and it only keeps getting higher. I have not finished college despite having gone to a prep school prior to attending the ASAT program. I feel inadequate about looking for a job. The only merit I can see in retrospect is the friendships I've formed. Oh, and the speech and language patgologist is nice too. I would advise against attending. In my eyes, Chapel Haven seems to define "independence" as "dependence on our services." read more

Check the accreditation and talk to families of others that have been there. Our experience was the most traumatizing disappointment of our lives. Look at the reviews for people who have been there 3, 4, 10 years. Why? It isn't free to do this - it's expensive. The point is to create independence, not create a line on the income statement. There were almost zero staff with experience with autism. Many different kinds of issues, including some that could be considered potentially dangerous. Autism does not need to be cured - it needs to be supported. There are those there with profound issues that may otherwise face institutionalization - they are staying at what could be about $82,000 per year (on our info sheet anyway). The classes were little more than YouTube shorts with no deliverables, taught by very inexperienced teachers. In short, this seemed to be a Haven for rich families who need to have their adults elsewhere. I would say that Anna K's review on this page sums up the experience nicely - horrible. My son had been a very satisfied and happy student and community member at Chapel Haven West in Tucson for nine years, when due to budget issues and effects of Covid they were forced to close. The parent organization Chapel Haven East gave six months' notice, offered to pay for the services of an educational consultant to help with finding a next program, paid moving costs for students who moved to New Haven plus offered three months of free tuition. My son has now been here since June and is thriving due to their excellent staff and programs. read more

The staff at Chapel Haven have helped him acquire the skills needed to live in an apartment. They have helped him develop interests, job skills and especially social connections. Chapel Haven is a gem! My son attended the two year ASAT program 12 years ago. When he graduated, he decided to stay in New Haven and continue with his work and schooling. Chapel Haven has helped him become an independent young man.He had a roommate for 7 years and now lives in his own apartment. My son does not drive, but he knows the transportation system in the area like the back of his hand!! We are so proud of him. We live 6 hours away, so we have put a lot of trust in Chapel Haven to be there for him in emergencies and time of struggle. They have stepped up and helped our son tremendously. My son is so proud of himself! I recommend this school to any young adult with Aspberger's and is need of independent living skills. We will support school should my son decide, someday, to move closer to home. read more

Hello, my name is Anna Krause and I am 25 years of age. I am diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ptsd, anxiety, and depression. I am originally from Pennsylvania and I moved to New Haven ct for one reason only to attend Chapel Haven which is a school that's suppose to help young adults like me. I enrolled in chapel havens ASAT program which stands for Aspergers spectrum adult transition. When I started the program in August 2016 there was a total of 15 students, but that didn't last long. Slowly my fellow students were leaving because of several different issues; for example they advertise and tell people it's an individualized program for each student, but it's not even close. We were all stuck taking repetitive classes and most of us already knew the content that was discussed. ASAT is a 2 program but every fellow student I was with including me left Chapel haven within 1.5 years left because no one was happy with the services. There was 15 students in the beginning and then one student stayed and everyone else left. That should tell you something. My time at chapel have was such a ridiculous waste of time and energy. The staff was lazy especially in the evenings when they were suppose help us do our chores. I can state for a fact that several times when a staff member was suppose to help me in my apartment they never showed up and I had to go out searching for the help. Now I definitely did not sign up for this. As a person with autism I still know the difference between good and bad work ethics and this was not my job to go find staff to help me when they were already suppose to be there in the first place. The staff are sometimes not as understanding of people who have autism as well as other disabilities like me. They definitely didn't know how to deal with my ptsd and some other things such as dealing with my anxiety. I went there to find a job and they had 1.5 years to find me a job but they didn't even really try that hard. You would think a program like chapel would have work contracts with companies in the local area. But No!!! That's another huge WOW for chapel haven! WAY to GO! With such a horrible experience with the job. I was even forced to take an Southern Connecticut State University class in the summer which I really didn't want to do at first since I already went to college and graduated BEFORE chapel haven. But again I was forced. (Again not individualized) however I enjoyed the class I even made neurotypical friends. But chapel never liked me or allowed me to hangout with them outside in the community. They were allowed at my Halloween party but chapel haven staff had to supervise. Just ridiculous! They made me and probably others feel we Stuck on a island with no one other than people with disabilities. Which is okay but it doesn't need to be this way 24/7. I know how a special need school should run because I went to The Pathway school which by the way exceeds anything and everything that chapel tried to achieve but failed. So as you can guess I am pretty furious because my family spent $84,000 a year which is why we thought it would be a great program, well laugh out loud because it's definitely not even worth $1,000. So I decided to leave the program early and spend the money on an apartment in the local area. I now get no services from chapel haven but I do get 2 hours of help though another agency. The funny thing is I am making more progress since I left then when I was there. So if you are looking into chapel haven definitely don't take what say as the truth. And keep your ideas open to other programs. Chapel haven might be new campus but that definitely doesn't mean the services are any better. So chapel haven I hope you can improve on your services because people with disabilities could really use a dependable program unlike what you are now! read more

I do not think my son could be living as independently as he is without the help and support of Chapel Haven. My son was in the ASAT program for two years. When he graduated he moved into an apartment close to the Chapel Haven campus and is still a part of their community. My son has been part of the Chapel Haven community for over five years now. Chapel Haven has been instrumental in helping my son grow into the young man he is today. Before we got involved with Chapel Haven my son was "lost" not knowing what his next direction was going to be after high school. After attending an open house, meeting the staff and other students at Chapel Haven we knew that Chapel Haven was going to be a good fit for our son. My son has met some wonderful friends and we have met other parents who we have become good friends with. The other parents are so supportive and encouraging. The staff at Chapel Haven has helped my son tremendously, the many classes and the activities they offer has helped him with his self-confidence. My son now has moved out on his own and is thriving in the New Haven Community. He is now a role model to many of the other students at Chapel Haven.
