I was never a fan of reading for fun until I hit my 30s. Now I make sure to hit every local bookstore I see. For the longest time, I thought this was a book store for Agnes Scott students only, but found out it's also open to the public. This place is wonderful with their carefully curated books. Also one of the few places left where face masks are appreciated, but not required. I do believe if they have events in the back of the building, then you just wear a face mask. I was able to snag a few books and opened up an account with them - it's free btw. I was told that if you spend $150, then you get a $10 credit. Tons of parking in the back too, which is a plus.

I visited this bookstore for the first time about two weeks ago and wow--the bookstore of my literal dreams! There are a lot of small details that make this place special. I love that they have accessible parking. They actually answer the phone when you call with questions--unlike some businesses in the age of social media. Their selection is huge, with an emphasis on books that highlight marginalized communities. I was immediately struck by their kid's section because I have a baby niece. They had all the books I was looking for and more. I can't wait to go back today!

    Great collection of books

Love this bookstore! It seems like someone's front porch but the bookstore is cozy and has a great collection of books. They have all genres of books, stickers, Agnes Scott Merch, and Knick knacks. There is ample parking in the back of the store. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They carry a superb collection of books on "Politics of Place", "Women and Race", and "Children's Books". It is a reader's heaven and a perfect place to buy a gift. The books are moderately priced. They have month-wide events for readings and discussions. I highly recommend bringing yourself here with a cup of coffee and kindling your thoughts with some amazing reads.

Omg I've lived here all my life and this is the first time I've stepped into this amazing bookstore! If you're looking to educate yourself more on all things social justice, abolition, liberation struggles, inclusive feminism, lgbtq+ topics, this is a great bookstore for you. I was only in there for 30 min and left with 9 books. They also have great community events I'll definitely be checking out.

I love reading and books and bookstores and the smell of books...you get the idea. So when I travel, I don't buy souvenirs. I buy books from local independent bookstores (books about or set in the place I'm in are especially sought after souvenirs). So, when I was in Atlanta this past weekend, I knew I was going to stop in to a few independent bookstores in the city (Atlanta has a lot of bookstores!). And I knew that Charis was at the top of my list. The oldest feminist bookstore in the South. To be honest, I didn't even know there were feminist bookstores in the South. And Charis lived up to my expectations. What a selection of books! Everything I wanted AND nothing I didn't! This is a place to browse and find something amazing or to come get a signed copy of a book by an author who was just in the store. The store is inside an old house, and I was able to park down the street and walk up to the bookstore. And I left with a few "souvenirs" to be sure!

This was an incredible store. When I travel I have a tradition of seeking out a used bookstore with an emphasis on queer identities. Charis is not a used bookstore but it is an incredible place. Charis has a long and important history in the queer community so it was wonderful to visit this incredible space. Their main focus has historically been on feminist and lesbian literature, but they have since evolved to incorporate a broader literature about and for the queer community. I was pleased to find and purchase a recently published queer history book, as a young adult novel. (I'm a sucker for a young adult novel about queer literature.) It's important to also be transparent: this is not a used bookstore, and therefore sells literature at retail value. However... you should go here, and you should purchase a book in your price range. Why is this important? There are very few of these spaces left in the United States, so it is important to patronize these businesses. Unfortunately, It's so easy to just find the book you want and purchase it on places like Amazon, in which case you might save a few bucks. But remember that you may not have found some of these books without places like Charis. So, support the community. In my case, I opted to purchase two books but write down two books to purchase elsewhere at a later time. All in all, this is an important place in the community and for the community. They have a great selection of popular books and books for/about the community. They also host events and readings which feature members of our community. Check them out. Thanks Charis - I look forward to my next visit.

There is paid parking lot right outside the front of the store with several other areas for parking nearby but we walked over from MARTA and it was a breeze. The store is huge! There are sooooo many books and I love the layout. The signage makes it super easy to find what you're looking for and the staff are super helpful. The bookstore itself is so inviting and the kiddos loved playing in the play area where they could interact with other kiddos, read a book, and play with trains. There is a wide selection of books for allll sorts of folks, genres, ages and I appreciated how inclusive the selections were. We definitely came out with a ton of books and I'm sure we'll be back soon for more! Read more books!!!!

I love this little bookstore!…read more Well, there's nothing little about the space and endless opportunities to find literary greatness at this bookstore in the heart of Decatur. I've had the opportunity to visit Little Shop of Stories numerous times since I moved to Atlanta, but my visits totally hit differently now that I'm a mom. As someone raised by a teacher (with help from Reading Rainbow and Levar Burton), I've passed this onto my son although he can't read yet, lol. So we are always adding to his little library as he grows. Beyond books, Little Shop of Stories also carries so many fun educational toys for kids and books for readers of all ages. It's so easy to get lost in their large collections, but luckily they keep it incredibly organized and make it easy to find whatever your imagination can dream of. After finding a few goodies to take home to my little one, I strolled around the store a bit more and took in the whimsical vibes. Just being in there lifted my mood! Seriously a wonderful place to transport yourself into the magical world of books and discovery, no matter your age.

My Review of the Book Crook: Waiting 48 Years to Leave This Google Review…read more On my 13th birthday decades ago, my parents opened a small new-and-used bookstore called The Book Trading Post here in the Atlanta area. They ran it successfully for 12 years. My father had connected with Alex, the owner of the original Book Nook on or near North Decatur/Clairmont, who promised a great variety of around 30,000 books. What arrived instead were massive duplicates -- 30 to 50 copies of the same titles. It was a horrible, upsetting experience that stayed with my father. At the time I was 13 and didn't really know what it all meant -- I just knew he was upset. My father passed in 1981 after chemotherapy and radiation at Emory. Recently, I brought in a large personal collection to the current Book Nook Decatur location -- over 130 albums plus many books, including rare 1940s-1960s sci-fi classics and a signed copy of Miracle in Atlanta. As a longtime collector of coins, books, comics, historic color brochures, and more, I knew the value easily exceeded $500, likely more. I first spoke with the manager on March 25th of this year. He gave a standard percentage quote and left a message. When I returned on March 27th to collect payment, I received just $70. They kept all the books -- which filled the entire counter on the right when you walk in -- and roughly half the albums. I left with two small suitcases. Walking around the store afterward, I saw their selling prices and realized they stand to make a substantial profit. I spoke with the manager (Doogie, like Doogie Howser from the 1980s show) and then with an employee named Scott, who has been there for years. I shared some of this backstory. Scott was pretend friendly and even suggested I didn't really need to write a bad review. That conversation left me feeling extremely uncomfortable, and that discomfort is exactly why I decided to write this review now. The owner is very old (likely in his late 80s or early 90s) and does not come into the store. I felt the manager was dishonest in the way the offer and process were handled. It all felt like history repeating itself in the worst way -- like a scene from Red Dawn: "Avenge me." In the end, I just took the money to be done with it. This isn't just about one low payout. Most people don't know the old story of The Book Trading Post and that first disappointing deal with the Book Nook. Now the full 48-year circle -- from my parents' store in the 1970s to today -- is part of the public record. If you have anything of real value (books, albums, collectibles), think carefully before bringing it here. Get your own realistic expectations and consider other options. P.S. For comedy purposes, I've officially renamed this place The Book Crook.

I overheard someone say, "This place is huge" and it is. It is much bigger than you think when you see it from the outside. There are so many twists and turns to explore. We took our time and wandered around. You can easily lose track of time. There are a few staff members up front that will help with any questions. They don't have an itemized inventory but they can point you in the right direction. I would definitely recommend this place.
