General William Tecumseh Sherman grew up here and then lived in the home with his family. It has been lovingly restored with many of the families own belongings. Each tour is guided and narrated by a local knowledgeable docent. You get plenty of details about how they lived, who they socialized with, (Henry Clay and Daniel Webster) as well as historical information about Lancaster. Furnishings are beautiful with pieces dating back to the 1800's. This is a must do when you visit.

That said, it doesn't look run down, because it was restored in 2019, so it actually looks deceptively new. In fact, when I was looking for it while walking down Main Street, I passed by it a couple of times because I was like, "Well, this is the address, but this can't be the Mithoff Building because this building doesn't look old." According to my internet research, the Mithoff Building was built around 1820 as a hotel. Then the building was modified to a three-story, Italianate-style brick building in 1870. Now, the building is home to retail and service businesses, as well as a few residential apartments. The public is welcome to go inside the building and explore the first floor, where there's a mural on the wall with a timeline of the history of Lancaster, Ohio. If you're into history, this is a good place to visit to get some background on the town.

Who the heck knows. But maybe homie had an inkling, because apparently dude was a four-star general, which the internet is telling me is the highest rank in the military, so I'm sure his hometown was very proud of him. You go, General Sherman! The statue of Sherman and a historical marker are located in a little plaza at the corner of Main Street and Broad Street. The plaza is nice and has some benches and things to sit on. You can read all about Sherman, and then sit and reflect on how much he accomplished during his life, and his dedication to preserving the Union.

There are both walking and driving paths at Dawe's - I felt like I could get lost here, but in a good way. I learned a lot about the different trees here and am filled with awe as I leave. Some knockoffs and more recent production, especially in the basement under the historic house. Another basement room is for meetings but also has artifacts from the factory and explains the glassmaking process. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a gift shop with actual Heisey glass for sale, plus souvenirs and books. Parking out front, with this in the middle of the museum complex and park. Well worth a visit for anyone interested in local history, industry, art, and decor.

This is an amazing look at the history of glass and the incredible run of the Heisey Glass Company. The collections are organized into various eras - clearly labled - that show the development of Heisey Glass over the years. Other collections are based on the type of glass - i.e. the introduction of different colors and styles. There are also exhibits illustrating Heisey's "animal glass". The staff is not only VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE but also EXTREMELY PRSONALBE and VERY WILLING (EAGER) to talk about the collections. There is a very informative (approximatley 20 minute) video that you shouldn't miss. Having spent 4 summers working in a glass plant while working my work through college, seeing and hearing the stories behind the Heisey glass was especailly fasicnating. The gift shop is loaded with pieces of "original Heisey glass" for sale at very resonable prices.

Furthermore, that really didn't matter once I got inside. The Georgian is breathtaking and full of little details that make it special. I found myself bending down to look at the intricate carvings on the furniture, stretching to look up the spiral staircase, and going down the stairs very slowly to catch all of the fascinating things that have found a home at the Georgian. The docents were fantastic, and the gift shop is not to be missed!

I'm a big sucker for 60s, so I made a point to check out DACO's current Mod/60s exhibit before it…read morewas gone. All I can say is: So cool! Yes, I definitely wish there were more artifacts, posters and clothing on display, but that's just because I'm a lover of any and all things 60s era, so anything original to the time period just plain excites the dickens out of me and makes me think and ponder socio-economic conditions, and life in general, during America's past 100 years even more, haha. The museum is next to the Sherman house, a historical home with its own significance. There's plenty of free street parking if the small lot next to DACO happens to be full. I believe it was $11 to see their spotlight exhibit. If you're an art/history buff, I recommend you take a day stroll down to Lancaster and stop here; anything of historical significance is always worth patronizing, imo.

The current exhibit is Flower Power: Flora in Fashion. I loved all of the use of floral print…read morefabrics and the big paper flowers decorating the entrance to the exhibit. As part of the exhibit, I took a flower arranging class at the art education center on the museum property. Our instructors Brooke and Elizabeth were very knowledgable and gave us lots of helpful tips for working with flowers at home. Elizabeth provided all of the fresh flowers from her floral design business and farm (Bluegreen Gardens) and they were gorgeous. Admission to the Decorative Arts Center is free. On the weekends, they are open Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 pm. The staff is made up of volunteers and they are always fantastic.
