Pye Funeral Home - Instead of handing the obituaries out, they hid them

    Pye Funeral Home

    (16 reviews)

If I had to choose a favorite funeral home in the city, it would easily be O.H. Pye Funeral Home…read more In my opinion, it stands out as one of the best funeral homes in Detroit--not just because of the services they provide, but because of the genuine care and professionalism they show families during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Back in 2014, I began the difficult process of making pre-need arrangements for my grandmother. I was working closely with Rita Jordan, who is truly the epitome of a professional. From our very first meeting, she demonstrated the highest levels of care, concern, and empathy. She was patient, informative, and incredibly compassionate as we discussed plans that no family ever really wants to have to make. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed just weeks later. What had been pre-planning quickly turned into immediate need. During that tragic and emotional time, Rita was with me every step of the way. She made sure everything was handled with dignity and respect, and she provided steady guidance when I needed it most. Her presence alone brought a sense of calm during such a painful experience. I also deeply respect Mr. Pye III as the owner. It says a lot about a business when the owner is a present and active face of the company. I've personally seen him attend services, which shows his commitment and hands-on dedication. That level of involvement speaks volumes about the values of the organization. Losing a loved one is never easy, but having a funeral home that treats you like family and walks beside you through the process makes all the difference. O.H. Pye Funeral Home has certainly earned my respect and, if I had to choose, would be my top choice in Detroit.

ONE DAMN STAR. I…read morehave about 50 obituaries because the funeral Director disappeared shortly after the service started, and many people didn't get obituaries . Later, people said they thought we were out. Ummm, no. Obviously there was something more important than my grandfather service. now I'm stuck with about 50 obituaries that I paid for.

Although I travel the service drive often, I don't see any business traffic for this funeral home because the entrance and parking lot are in the back of the building away from the service drive. Haley was the provider for services for my dear neighbor recently. For his viewing at the funeral home, the Haley staff members greeted us upon entering and directed us to the correct parlor. The beautiful parlor was full of family members and well wishers. The video playing with various photos of my neighbor with his family and acquaintances was a nice touch. Outside of the parlor was a memorial display for veterans that have transitioned or never returned. It caught my attention and it was a great reminder of those who have served our country. I do recommend that the tablecloth be ironed to provide a better visual.

But later, showed his true colors when we changed our mind about the type of casket for my Dad. I was so shocked that a funeral director, of all professions, could behave the way he did. There were some errors during the service. But all would have been forgiven, because we're all human and imperfect. But, again his behavior regarding the change is unforgivable. I would Not Recommend Haley.

It was not only the middle of the night, but it was a cold, sub-zero, snowy night as well. Alan Dorfman sent some people out to the house to get her and also arranged to meet us later in the day on Saturday to discuss the arrangements. We found Alan Dorfman to be kind and understanding, with just the right touch of humor to lighten the mood. He also had the records from our grandmother, over a decade earlier, so he was able to just copy some of the information. My mother wanted to be cremated, so there was no urgency in terms of a service, and no need for a casket. He helped us to decide on the kind of memorial we wanted, told us that we could do it when we were ready, and that we could take a couple days to decide. He also recommended a videographer to put pictures on DVDs. (It was nice, but the videographer didn't seem to know much about the technology he was working with.) Jonathan Dorfman was very patient with us in regards to the obituary. We made changes to it several times. He posted online everything we originally said, but advised us that the same would be very expensive to post in the newspapers, and made suggestions for shortening what we wanted to print. We followed his advice and it saved us several hundred dollars. We are not a traditional Jewish family and did not want any clergy, as my mother would've hated that. Alan assured us that just having friends and family speak would be fine, if that was what we wanted. He asked us about whether or not we wanted some of the traditional amenities, but since we were not familiar with them, we declined -- except for the 7 day memorial candle, and he gave us 2 of them, since my sister & I live in different places. At a very somber, confusing and overwhelming time, Dorfman Chapel will treat you and your loved ones with dignity, grace and compassion.
