If I had to choose a favorite funeral home in the city, it would easily be O.H. Pye Funeral Home. In my opinion, it stands out as one of the best funeral homes in Detroit--not just because of the services they provide, but because of the genuine care and professionalism they show families during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Back in 2014, I began the difficult process of making pre-need arrangements for my grandmother. I was working closely with Rita Jordan, who is truly the epitome of a professional. From our very first meeting, she demonstrated the highest levels of care, concern, and empathy. She was patient, informative, and incredibly compassionate as we discussed plans that no family ever really wants to have to make. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed just weeks later. What had been pre-planning quickly turned into immediate need. During that tragic and emotional time, Rita was with me every step of the way. She made sure everything was handled with dignity and respect, and she provided steady guidance when I needed it most. Her presence alone brought a sense of calm during such a painful experience. I also deeply respect Mr. Pye III as the owner. It says a lot about a business when the owner is a present and active face of the company. I've personally seen him attend services, which shows his commitment and hands-on dedication. That level of involvement speaks volumes about the values of the organization. Losing a loved one is never easy, but having a funeral home that treats you like family and walks beside you through the process makes all the difference. O.H. Pye does a good job with the presentation of the body. However, it's too crowded for viewings. Need better crowd control. Parking lot was a lot of loitering with the smell of weed and alcohol. Had to walk thru large crowds of people to access doorway. To much emotional socializing outside of viewing rooms. Felt like trouble could occur at any moment. read more

ONE DAMN STAR. I have about 50 obituaries because the funeral Director disappeared shortly after the service started, and many people didn't get obituaries . Later, people said they thought we were out. Ummm, no. Obviously there was something more important than my grandfather service. now I'm stuck with about 50 obituaries that I paid for. read more

Pye lll and his beloved wife Brenda Pye. This is a family owned business and not just a face point for behind the scene corporate money makers. OH Pye has TERRIBLE customer service. The going home services were done well. My brother's service was held January 5, 2022. Because I did not know my brother had an insurance policy, I paid, out of pocket for his funeral. Before the service was held a policy was presented but I was told it was too late. However, they could handle the disposition of the funds from the policy and reimburse me. That was over two (2) months ago. EVERY time I call I am unable to speak with the people responsible. I leave messages and NOONE returns calls. I have been in limbo and it has gotten to the point where it is ridiculous! Again, their customer service is TERRIBLE!!!!! read more

Going to someone's funeral is much different than planning one. My family has used Pye twice with one being a traditional funeral and the other being cremation. The staff is for the most part welcoming, but there are some that need training. My first experience with funeral planning was not easy and the staff who did our appointment was not helpful. I guess they assumed when understood how a funeral service went because he skipped over alot of details. For $6k+ they should be able to explain things. My 1st impression wasn't great. The service was fine, but there suggested printer messed up the obituary which was found out as my cousin read the obituary ALOUD during the funeral. Against my first mind I went back and had a cremation done. I really thought that there was no way to have an error with a cremation. Literally it's a lot of documentation. The person who did my appointment was pleasant and attempted to answer questions I had although not knowledgeable of the process. This time I did my research so I could go there and tell them exactly what I wanted. Appointment was fast and simple. Then the bomb dropped. Imagine an unexpected death and not know if the right body was cremated. Something like a bad horror story. I received misinformation from not one, but two staff members. Then I am told my loved one was cremated before I even paid them. Something they said they didn't do. The experience went downhill fast with them even messing up the death certificate and shaking the urn to open it for me. Some staff members are sincere about the business and others are there for a check. Sad that it is hood at times and unprofessional. Never again will I use PYE. read more

Our family is very upset and dissatisfied with O.H. Pye. First, they prompted my father-in-law to get and pay for an unneeded embalming for my mother-in-law when we were clear that my mother-in-law was to be cremated without delay, in accordance with her clear expressed wishes. Second and most seriously, it has now been over three weeks since my mother-in-law's body was transferred to O.H. Pye, payment was rendered and documents were signed, and they have still not completed the death certificate or the cremation of my mother-in-law! It is unclear how much of the delay is incompetence, versus a lack of diligence or a lack of caring. Our services were simple and on the low end of the price list, so perhaps my poor mother-in-law is simply a low-low priority. I would advise anyone with funeral services needs to steer away from this outfit. read more

My father's funeral was January 25. On the business end of handling his funeral was a terrible experience. I was giving 4 to 5 days for his insurance money to come through. And on the fourth day they're asking me for money out of my pocket to pay for my father's funeral. But on the fifth business day which was that Monday the 25th the money was there but they refused to call the insurance company because I had already paid..I was told that the business for james Kennard was done..SHAME ON YOU!!!..it's all about the money!!! read more

I wish I could give zero starts. The lack of professional staff without good communication skills was extremely disappointing. The staff would not return phone calls or provide any updates in a timely manner. It took a total of 3 months to receive the death certificate after the funeral home got the hospital wrong twice even though we documented everything in writing. State of the Art Technology - they're not! Had 38 photos we wanted them to run on the DVD player to show our families on Wake night and at the funeral the next day. Surprise! They couldn't play: Our CDs, DVD -R, USB Flash Drive, External Hard Drive. Get real. Get rid of your 15 year old dinosaur DVD player. Get a $29 player from Walmart. I bet you that will play each and every one of our medias. read more

Things went from horrible, to terrible, to just ridiculous and unacceptable. Our funeral coordinator, Erica, did a horrible job communicating with my sister and I. She fell off the earth after payment was made. My mother's name was spelled wrong on their website and after communicating the error several times to Erica, it was never fixed. Her makeup was not done very well initially, but was fixed at the viewing. We specifically asked if paul bearers were needed for the service, in which Erica answered no, but at the end of the funeral service the director called for paul bearers, luckily we had enough men present to volunteer. Death certificates took 6 weeks to arrive and when they did, her middle name and maiden name was spelled wrong!!! Now we have to wait for a correction to be submitted and corrected copies to arrive which they are estimating could take 10 days. On top of everything gone wrong, they take no responsibility and blame the family for their screw ups, when I have email correspondence of everything on our end being communicated correctly. I will never recommend this place and will go the extra mile to provide warning to anyone who is considering them to take care of their deceased loved ones. read more

This was so unprofessional! I was sent to the wrong funeral this morning. I guess the young man that had ear plugs in while giving me the wrong information. I was looking for Carolyn Roseboro and was sent to Clarissa Ridley's funeral. Maybe he can't read. I'm so disappointed concerning this . I thought they were professional. The worst reason to need vending services. But they are a great staff, and good facility. I would recommend to anyone.

Some staff need lessons in privacy matters. Went to the funeral home for documentation regarding my father. Only to find out weeks later Kristna Pye contacted someone that had nothing to do with my fathers business regarding my visit. Very unprofessional! I am very dissatisfied! Don't take your loved one to this establishment. If they will breach privacy for one person they will do it again. It's hard enough to lose a loved one but when you have staff reporting private family business it becomes an issue. read more

Very disappointed in Pye Funeral Home. It was evident that all they cared about was getting their cut from my Uncle's insurance. The staff was insensitive and uncaring. They refused to allow us have a viewing at the scheduled time in a viewing room because my uncle's insurance had not cleared even though they confirmed that he had insurance and it would cover funeral expenses. 40 friends and family members were turned away at the viewing. To make matters worse while dealing with our grief, Pye refused to transport my uncles coffin to the church for the funeral!!! We had funeral services without the coffin! A family member begged them to show some kindness and allow us to say goodbye properly. They still wouldn't bring him in the hearse however they agreed to allow us to view at the funeral home. Not in a tasteful viewing room but in the BASEMENT!! Outside the embalming room. Such disrespect for the deceased and his family. I will never use Pye and would recommend no one use their services. They lack empathy and decency. read more
