I had an amazing experience yesterday at Charles Schwab yesterday. My parents have had an account there for over 30 years and I was helping my mom with the family trust and investments. We meet with Matthew Diaz to get the money moved around and filled out the paperwork to include the family trust. Matthew was very helpful and patient as we had several questions. I have an account with Schwab and do all my business on line. I have a requirement to visit an office in person, and I need an appointment. I got into a robotic phone tree and my experience was one of the worst I have ever had. I got handed off, had to reenter information I had already entered, twice. Finally got through to a live human, nowhere the office I need to visit. The representative told me he could not connect me to the office I need to visit, but would contact them and have them call me to make an appointment. We have been clients of Schwab Torrance Branch for over 15 years and it has been an entirely positive experience. We tend to be "buy and hold investors" but, Schwab also has all the resources and tools needed by the more active investor. The world has changed considerably in these 15 years as have the resources available to cyber criminals. Schwab is VERY security conscious and, a Schwab manager once saved us from what were going to be the very unpleasant results of our own stupidity. Fraud... Charles Schwab let someone named Danny Sillas. DBA Danny Sillas unknown business and unknown address steal more than $2200. With two transactions from my checking account. Chet B. at Schwab says after 19 years as a customer I did this. My case was tossed by the court. Because you agree to arbitration when signing up for Charles Schwab. The court cost me $70.00..The arbitration cost $220.00. It took from February to December to get a date for Discovery which would have been 2 days next June. I settled for $500. [Review #730] 2023-016 It's been so long (10+ years) that I don't remember when I began my Charles Schwab relationship. I've always banked with traditional financial institutions such as Cathay Bank (my 1st corporate job), Security Pacific Bank (located near my college & part-time job), etc. We happened to be eating nearby & my BFF said he created a brokerage & banking account with Charles Schwab in San Gabriel. I was particularly interested in the interest rate at the time; I believe it was around 4%. Currently, it's 0.45%, still higher than the traditionals between 0.01 % - 0.05%), paying 800% - 2000% more. Wowza! O_o While Schwab does offer banking services, by no means are they a traditional bank, meaning you can deposit or withdraw cash, open a safety deposit box, etc. However, ATM withdrawals can be made worldwide wherever Visa is accepted from the Investor Checking account, & unlimited ATM fee rebates for cash withdrawals that's refunded at the end of the month. Deposits are FDIC insured for up to $250,000 per depositor. Other typical services such as CDs, wire transfers, mortgage loans, credit cards, etc. are available usually at higher rate for savings & lower rate for loans. I kept/maintained only the checking account because I was hesitant to use the brokerage account (not FDIC insured), but Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. is a SIPC member. Back in the day, Schwab charges $12.95/trade, then lowering to $8.95, followed by $4.95 (I started trading in 2018), & finally slashing to $0 in 2019 to stay competitive with rival brokerages like E-Trade, Fidelity, TD Ameritrade (acquired by Schwab in 2020). I like the brokerage platform; it's fairly intuitive & if I have questions, I often call customer service: (877) 519-1403 that's available 24/7. Since my move to the South Bay, I use the Torrance branch. I like this new location better for its convenience & parking availability. But I missed their Saturday hours, & can understand why they stop providing this service since they're not a traditional bank. I'm now working locally so I can stop by during my lunch breaks. Besides Saturday hours, I especially miss the in-person idea/strategy sessions like: Behavioral Finance: How Emotions Impact Financial Decisions, Funding Your Paycheck in Retirement; Women & Investing: Get Started With Investing. I hope they will eventually bring these educational classes back (hint, hint). Customer service is usually excellent, friendly & knowledgeable advisors. The client relation specialists are especially nice when I bring in my LOs; they have offered them crayons & paper to doodle while I handle my transactions, given them bottled water, etc. I worked with Marc Myers to transfer my 401K. He also provided suggestions on how to best utilize their services to my advantage such as providing info on their new advisory service: Schwab Intelligent Portfolios™ (in 2015), an automated investment advisory service that provides sophisticated portfolio management with no advisory fees, no commissions, & no account service fees charged. I am not poor, but not super wealthy either. I have a decent amount of money for retiring and spoke to some private wealth managers and people at Fidelity, Vanguard and Schwab. Marc Myers at the Torrance office-VP, Sr Financial Consultant is the only one that spoke to me in a clear, and not condescending manner. I recommend him/Schwab to anyone that needs some advice-unlike others his follow up was excellent. read more

After calling Charles Schwab this morning, we tried to make an appointment in this branch. We were told just to walk in as they have "a lot of staff here who can help you" We walked in to invest money and to solve a second issue. We dealt with Sam who was impatient, rude and sexist. He literally spoke down to me and directed all my personal concerns directly to my husband whilst constantly reminding us how he's not supposed to be helping us. He barely answered our questions, seemed irritated at my novice understanding (my husband has been with them for years) and told us to do everything online. We were offered tea or water that was never presented and a computer that wasn't there. I guess you need millions of dollars to be deemed worth his time. I fully understand being short staffed but his im personable attitude and bad communication skills had me wondering why he pursued a career in customer service. Caring for my elderly parents was made impossible by this branch of Charles Schwab. They demanded a non-ambulatory person make an in-person visit in order to allow online access - which they promptly revoked. Then they lied to us about the beneficiary status of our account, forcing us into a completely unnecessary probate petition. I will never work with Schwab again, but especially this branch. I hate writing bad reviews. But I was treated to so many lies and excuses and rude treatment at this location I yanked my hard earned investment money out and took it elsewhere. I once tried to speak to the manager. She only agreed to speak to me on the phone by appointment. And THAT conversation was the final straw. I would never recommend this branch to anyone other than a masochist. For those that have had good experiences I feel happy for them. But if someone asked me for a recommendation I would tell them to go anyplace else. To be fair, however, I still use the services of Schwab Bank without having to go into this crappy branch. I'll be the first to write a review. I mean, after all, I really did come here first when deciding whether or not I should keep my account with them. So after coming across an account that my family has set up, I didn't know anything about, I went to the best place which was the website! A bunch of questions more and a phone number. The phone number really didn't help much but that it put me into an appointment setting. It took a week! More than a week and from that, I didn't only lose some profit, I lost a little trust. The appointment setting was for noon and the man didn't call me until 12:30. An appointment is an appointment, no? So to say the least, I was upset and disappointment! I finally just decided to ask the phone number if there was a branch that I could visit and wa-la! Thankfully this is so close by that I got to set an appointment for the next morning! Really, this branch succeeded my expectations and answered all my questions. I didn't have to wait a week. I didn't meet with a computer. I didn't have to pay a dime. My advisor walked me through everything and answered every question. He even gave me advice that was more like talking to a friend! His suggestions were really sincere and felt thoughtful. I'm happy to say that I won't be taking my account anywhere else. Don't waste your time going to this branch of Schwab. While, Charles Schwab built its reputation on providing high level of customer service-the Torrannce branch fails on every level of customer service! I specifically went to a branch (and sadly I assumed that this branch would provide high level of service that I have received from other Schwab branches) to conduct a complex transaction. However, after being greeted by a pleasant receptionist, I didn't get any level of service even after asking twice to speak with a representative. I was directed to a computer terminal. Here is note to the branch manager- if I wanted to do the transaction online, I would have. But I drove specifically to a branch for a Reason! Schwab has been difficult to deal with since I became a Trustee and Executor of an estate which is extremely complicated. Most of my encounters have been with the Corte Madera and San Francisco Branch which their representatives are useless. The estate representative that was assigned was totally incompetent. I even had a financial manager with me and they could not open an account. The Torrance Branch has been the most helpful with spending countless of hours helping me wade through the multitude of documents to move things forward. The account representatives at the Torrance branch are assets to the company. They are patient, supportive, knowledgeable and extremely helpful to get the paperwork required to move various accounts. It's still a work in progress, but with so many complications, getting to the right people is imperative. They understand what the institution requires to get things resolved expediently. read more

Awful branch -- they don't even list their direct phone number! I had to go through a call center to get the number but they couldn't get through to that branch either! I was told I could get a document to add an authorized trader notarized at the branch, but the call center told me they don't even have a notary! They said they could send an email that might take a couple days to get a response -- this is after they were so persistent and conscientious in getting me to transfer my account from another brokerage! read more

So I went to make my annual 401k contribution and was told that I already made it for the year on May 17. I smiled and said, "No, that contribution was for last year. Because of Covid the deadline for contributions was extended to May 17...the only reason why I was depositing funds on May 17. Your representative that helped me at the time said they were getting a lot of transactions that day at the last minute." They smiled nervously and said, "One moment..." After calling their supervisor I was told that they keyed it in wrong. They keyed it as a transaction for this year. I said, "Great. It happens. So how do you fix it?" They smiled sheepishly and said, "It's done. It can't be fixed." So, now I can't contribute for this year AND I have to figure out how to deal with the tax issue from last year since the ENTIRE DAMN REASON TO DO THIS was so that I could take the deduction on my taxes. Went in to the office to open a trust account with a cashiers check for over $500k and after the manager was to preoccupied flirting with the customers ahead of us. He was very short tempered and very Rude to us. Best financial advice is to short Charles Schwab stock and pull your money from these idiots and open a Fidelity account around the corner! read more

I love the people at the Torrance location! Over the years, they have become a part of my life. They know my kids and ask about my business ventures and know my name. Sounds simple but that just doesn't happen at the local branch of your bank like it used to! The corporate structure is just as awesome and they handle every call quickly and politely. I'm going to dig deep and find a con to temper all these pros: they cannot deal with cash. If you want to deposit $500 in cash from selling your used kayak, you are out of luck. Likewise, if you want to break a $100 bill so you have a kitty for your garage sale? No go. Good news? You can use any ATM on planet earth and they reimburse your ATM fees. It's the other end of the spectrum from a check cashing joint, for sure, but super nice people and customer service if you're in the market for a bank like this! read more

I had opened an account online to begin investing, so I called the Torrance branch (310) area code, and nobody picked up. I thought perhaps I dialed the wrong number or pressed the wrong numbers, so I decided to call a few more time and press other numbers to see if I could speak to a human....I was NOT able to. So, I drove all the way to the branch, and walked in, and it was EMPTY. I asked them why they didn't pick up, and the lady there said that she was training someone, which is understandable, but isn't answering the phone part of the training process? Also, isn't it better to answer the phone, then carry on with the training? I decided to call Fidelity in Torrance to see if they picked up the phone, and they DID in 30 seconds, so I decided to close my account with Charles Schwab just 1 day after I opened it. I called Charles Schwab's customer service number, and their response was that the Stock Market is booming, and everyone was busy, so that's why both customer service and the Torrance Charles Schwab branch didn't answer phones quickly, which I believe has no merit, because if that were accurate, then Fidelity would have long hold times as well, but it was not the case. To me, when a business does not pick up the phone, there is either a problem, or they don't care, and I will never invest with a company that doesn't care about me. Good luck everyone read more

Good customer service overall. Reps are available for inquiry and do a good job of advising rather than pushing for account management. Modern office and professional staff. The only negative experience I've had is the inability to contact my local office. Calls are sent to a customer center in Phoenix, Az, when local officials are unavailable (frequently) and information is provided to that center.
