Then I took it out and it left me stranded. I had someone else look at it and the motor was blown. This asshole charged me 2700 yo do repairs on a blown motor that he never even addressed. He will take your money do not trust this mechanic shop.

I brought my boat to Dan, the owner at Whitton Marine, in Oct of 2015 immediately after spending…read morethe day on the water. It was my first boat and I had spoken to Dan earlier in the week about giving it a "tune up". The boat ran great, but since I bought it used I thought it'd be a good idea to have it looked over and see if it needed any general maintenance. Over the phone he quoted me around $250 and said he'd call if it would be more. Upon dropping it off, I asked if he could give me an estimate on a few things. In addition to speaking with him, I left a typed list of work that I wanted estimated. It included adding a second battery, replacing a gauge, and a few other miscellaneous items. After a couple weeks I hadn't heard anything, so I called. Dan tells me he went ahead and did nearly all the work on the list! I was in shock. I asked if he read the paper, which had PLEASE PROVIDE ESTIMATES in bold and underlined across the top. He looked at the paper I had left while on the phone and apologized, but the work had already been done. He wouldn't tell me the total over the phone and asked that I come to the shop. I came immediately after work that day. The total was over $1800! Under no circumstance was I prepared to pay that much money, but Dan offered no alternative but to pay the balance. Some of the work wasn't entirely complete so I made a partial payment and paid the rest a week or so later. The next time we took the boat on the water it was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The weather was great and we had family in town. We launched the boat and idled out to the Wando River, but upon giving it some gas, the engine died. It proceeded to sputter and die a number of times, refusing to go over 5 MPH. I called Dan from the water and he said, "I'm on vacation, buddy. Call me on Mon," and hung up on me. In no business environment have I ever been treated so poorly. In that moment, Whitton Marine had trumped every negative experience I'd ever had with a business. Against my good judgment, I ended up bringing the boat back to Whitton because I had already been forced to pay nearly $2k and if he broke something it should be repaired at no charge. My boat sat in their lot for nearly 6 months! After repeated calls, texts, and emails, Dan finally said that he doesn't know what's wrong with my boat, but it's nothing he did to it. He then demanded that I pick up my boat immediately and if I didn't he would start charging storage fees! He had reached a new low. I picked up my boat and brought it to Longshore Boats up the road. After one day, the manager calls me and says a part that was removed at Whitton had been reinstalled backwards! It makes me wonder if my boat was even looked at over the 6 months it sat there. The experience at Longshore was night and day. Needless to say, I'll never use or recommend Whitton Marine for any service.
