Nice area to walk around if you do the Freedom Trail or not! You can skip it and just visit the Charlestown Navy Yard, by the water, it has a Marina and various ships. I enjoyed visiting the USS Constitution which is free to tour and had a great experience. There's also the USS Constitution Museum close by, another interesting spot to check out for history buffs and not only. You can take the ferry back to downtown Boston and that is a nice to ride, a great way to see cool views of the city. Nice landmarks, cool new sculptures, a more unique part of town! read more

This is a stop along the Freedom Trail and includes a few awesome things to see. The first is the USS Constitution which is free to the public to tour. The next is the USS Constitution Museum which is a two story building that is entry by donation only. The USS Cassin Young is also docked there and opened for the public. Born and raised here and it took me almost 30 years to come visit. This is the last stop on the freedom trail where you can see two historic sites - USS Constitution and USS Cassin. Both are free to visit. For the USS Constitution you do have to go through security and show a form of ID. There's a guide who tells the story of the ship and the historical events it gone through, such an amazing site. There's also a museum in the area where it goes into detail of the build out of the Constitution, who worked on the ship etc. There's not a fixed admission fee and relies on a donation to visit. Whether you're a local or a tourist, it's definitely a must to visit. read more

I really enjoyed going to the Charlestown Navy Yard! Definitely someone visiting the Boston area should come visit. From 1801 to 1974, this Yard was a shipyard and repair facility for the US Navy. It was also the place where the first US Naval Ship of the Line (USS Independence) was constructed. Within the Charlestown Navy Yard you can visit the USS Cassin Young, a World War 2 era destroyer that served in the Pacific. But the crown jewel of the Yard would be the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned US Navy vessel. This ship still sails once a year (Fourth of July) and every day before the end of the day, fires a canon shot! Super cool place to visit! read more

Wow. This was the veining of our country and there is so much history here. First dry dock in the worlds.

Awesome fun and education for my family of 10 (4-20 yr old kiddos). Took about an hour, watched a couple films, built legos, got live instruction on food on ship and played a fun little video game on ships. We got in free due to active military status but I think it's still be a nice visit if you are hitting the USS Constitution and have young kids that you want to get some take aways for your visit! As a Marine, I appreciated the education and history. read more

To me this is the best overall attraction in all of Boston. For one it's free, for two the beauty of both USS Constitution, USS Cassius young is second to none. Being able to explore both boats is amazing (I'll say you get to view about 70-75% of both boats. The views over looking the water is beautiful. The museum is actually a really good interactive museum for both kids and adults. You also get to see the section where the boats are built and you can also catch the public ferry here. Over all a must come to place and I'll say it will take you about 2-4 hours to do everything. read more

On our last day in Boston we hiked the Boston Freedom Trail across the Charlestown Bridge to explore the Charlestown points of interest. This hike included the Charlestown Navy Yard, the home of the USS Constitution renown as the oldest operating ship in the US Navy. At the time of our tour it was drydocked. Owing to the fact that we did not step foot physically on the ship, I am writing this review based on my experience in the Charleston Navy Yard in place of the USS Constitution. Yelp has a separate listing for the USS Constitution that includes several energetic, enthusiastic, and useful reviews encouraging people to see it. Prior to stepping foot in the Charleston Navy Yard, my brother and I toured the Bunker Hill Monument at the northernmost point of the Freedom Trail. By the way, I highly recommend seeing both Bunker Hill and Charleston Navy Yard together. It is an easy walk along the brick pathway of Freedom Trail that passes through a picturesque historic Charlestown then under the elevated US 1 underpass into the Navy Yard. When we stepped foot in the 30-acre Navy Yard, our footprints were on National Park soil. This historic navy yard is incorporated into Boston National Historic Park. This is a discontinuous National Park made up of eight National Historic Landmarks, that are mostly connected to the Freedom Trail. One of its two visitor centers are in the Navy Yard. The Charlestown Navy Yard dates back to 1801. It is a Navy Yard rich in history where shipbuilders built over 200 warships. This includes the USS Constitution that is currently dry docked in pier 1. As history has written, it ceased being an active Navy base on July 1, 1974. The National Park Service would preserve it. Today the mission of the Charlestown Navy Yard is to interpret the art and history of naval ship building. Today the main points of interest are the USS Constitution, USS Constitution Museum (free but encourages donations), Visitor Center, and USS Cassin Young. Regardless that we passed over stepping foot in the USS Constitution, we took in the scenery concurrent to a photo taking spree. I also read the descriptive signs discussong shipbuilding and the history of the place and USS Constitution. I followed the Freedom Path brick topography up to where it concluded by the USS Constitution Museum. This was the ultimate photo spot in the Charleston Navy Yard. Here is a 360 degree Yelp snapshot where I am standing on the Freedom Trail by the USS Constitution Museum. Facing north there is a parking lot near US 1. Facing east there is the USS Constitution Museum. Through exhibits and collections this museum tells the story of the USS Constitution. Here is a museum tip: In Google Maps if you pan over it then tap street view you can tour inside the museum. When I saw it in person, I was impressed with the realistic model of the USS Constitution. Back outside the museum and facing south is the USS Constitution and the Charleston River. The oldest active warship still looks majestic and worthy of spending time looking at. Facing southwest across the river is the Boston skyline. Facing west is the Freedom Trail headed for the Charleston Bridge bordering historical buildings. In conclusion, the Charlestown Navy Yard with Bunker Hill are Boston points of interest that I highly recommend seeing. Regardless that you pass over stepping foot inside the USS Constitution, the Charlestown Navy Yard will satisfy it's mission of interpreting the art of Navy ship building and the visitor's mission of a fantastic time. read more

After a great Mexican dinner, my date drove us all around Boston and reminded me of all the places I missed. Fenway Park. Back Bay. Newbury St. Nantasket Beach. After going down memory lane, he decided on one last destination before the date ended. And this was a great choice. He'll definitely get more dates. We drove into a parking lot which overlooked the water. He parked his eco-terrorist vehicle, and we got out to walk closer to the water. We passed baseball fields, one adult-sized and one pee-wee sized. We walked through the grass and then we reached the boardwalk. The boardwalk is just in an awkward location. You have to cut through the grass and walk a bit before getting to the treat. I guess the best things come to those who wait! It was late and the marina was closed. So we walked just a short length of the boardwalk, talked, and then he held my hand. Gasp! I had butterflies in my stomach. A great date spot. This place has spectacular views and is a bit secluded. I absolutely loved it. Who says free things aren't good? This experience costed nothing and yet it was priceless in my heart. read more

The security gate was not difficult and actually is not anywhere bear what TSA does. The staff is a mixture of military and civilian but all are friendly. The Yard is vast but everything is a short walk from the previous destination. Lots of stamps to get for Natl Park at the Visitors center. The bus 93 picks you up downtown and drops you off at the gates. Way cheaper than trolley. The Freedom trail is this little brick line and is easy bvb to follow. I found Bostonians to be super friendly and helpful. read more

We live between the Monument & the Navy Yard and highly rec the Navy Yard to everyone. There's always fun things to do, whether you're in town for the day/weekend or a resident. During the Summer/Fall, Castle Island Brewing has now set up a dog-friendly pop up with games, food etc. Super fun! The Navy Yard is truly as good as it gets! Although friends and I planned to kayak in the Charles, the overflow of sewage and blooming blue-green algae turned us off. So, what to do on a gorgeous day in Boston, when walking great distances isn't an option due to an injured foot? We considered zoos (there are two in the area), but then thought of the USS Constitution. Luckily, it's located in the Navy Yard in beautiful Charlestown. Managed by the National Park Service (get your NPS passport stamp in the Museum), the site is free and informative. Combined with the great harbor views and really, really good museum, and you've got a great place to spend a few hours. The Constitution is unbelievable! Built in the late 18th century, it is still commissioned and cared for by the Navy, with enlisted men dressed in period costume who give great explanations of the ship and its activities. You'll want to check this out. BONUS: it's on the self-guided Freedom Trail (the end of it?) and you can take a $3 ferry ride across the harbor in either direction. There's also a 1943 Destroyer that is open to self-exploration. This one is maintained by volunteers who also give good insights into the workings of the ship. For adults, but especially for kids, the museum is a must-do. It's loaded with activities and games to keep them occupied for hours. read more

Great museum for all ages - the kinetic approach to learning is well-done throughout the entire museum. The kids stayed busy the entire visit, giving the older kids and adults the time to take in the historical aspects without whiny kids. It was easy to get here via public transport. We came riding the 93 from Downtown Crossing and left taking the ferry. Both were pleasant trips. I stayed at the park and the ships. This is a review of the Charlestown Navy Yard museum. You have to go through a metal detector just to get into the museum. Not sure why when you don't have to go through security to see the USS Constitution museum across the dry dock area. Some very interesting exhibits here about the Navy Yard, plus a movie to watch about the history of the area. Your gift store for the Navy Yard is also here. A good place to go at the end of your tour of the Navy Yard so you can sit down and watch the film. read more

Currently she is in dry dock amd was not taking any tours, but was able to view from the railing. The museum was kind of boring and dated. They had a few old relics that were neat to lool at. Great place took take your kids. My kids loved this place. Your allowed to go into the ships and view some of the really cool features. I recommend coming on a sunny day because there is some walking you might have to do and part of the ferry to get there doesn't have a roof. Overall great tourist attraction and place to bring your kids. read more

I came here while walking the Freedom Trail around Boston and it's got a great view from the water's edge back toward the North End. I was here on a nice clear day and it definitely made for some great pictures. They also had a warship in the dry dock that people were able to get onto and take a look around. It also was less crowded that trying to get onto the USS Constitution. read more
