We had a great time in Charlestown State Park. My wife and I explored and hiked. Did a bunch of fun activities up here. It has a great story behind it. A lot of neat scenery, and one heck of a walking trail at the rose island. Getting up that hill is brutal. It's a lot of fun for sure and we enjoyed it and we will definitely be back.

I made it my 2021 resolution to hit every single state park in Indiana and this was my first one. Omg I almost died. I had heard about an abandoned amusement park and I wanted to check it out. It's not what I expected but it's still pretty cool. The pool has been filled in for "safety" reasons, which seems fair. I loved reading the history pieces around the island. Way more fun than most history classes I've taken. And omg the workout. Getting to the island was fine. But coming back. That was a struggle. It's a 70 foot incline over a short period of time. Be prepared to take breaks and definitely if you've got any health issues maybe don't take this trail. Overall very fun.

We really enjoyed this trail. We parked at trail three to get to Rose Island. Rose Island was the main reason we took this trip but we will definitely go back to check out other trails. The very steep hill was a doozy for us but we appreciated the stopping points to sit for a breather along the way. We enjoyed learning the history of Rose Island. We were so glad they had pictures and information showing us how it used to look. If you're interested in this one, it's definitely a neat experience.

An amazing gem in Indiana! Tons of hiking trails that were actually challenging, and some that are flat. Visiting Rose Island was really awesome. My pup and I loved it!

For all you history buffs, give this place a shot. As I'm sure you've seen in photos and promos, it has an abandoned amusement park with lots of signage, existing materials, and info on what took place many, many years ago. Reasons to love this park: - the history - the hiking trails can be quite nice - lots and lots of wildlife (we saw snake, turtles, deer, birds galore on our hike) - pawpaws! We picked quite a few along one of the trails during mid-October. With the above in mind, I will add that this was one of the trashiest (most littered) state parks I've been to living in Indiana all my life. It was really discouraging to see so much trash and litter scattered throughout the park and along the river. C'mon y'all, don't be trashy.

This park was so cool!! The loop around Rose Island is about 2 miles (trail 7). They did a really good job with information placards around the island to learn about the history. The first mile down to the island is all paved and makes for a great hour or two of exploring!

Charlestown State Park is a great place to go to enjoy nature and get away from the city! They have several trails that you can hike, and of course they have Rose Island that you can visit. Rose Island has an eerie feeling, but it was so neat to visit. The park is very well kept and has a lot to offer!

Clean, quiet, and did I mention clean? Very nice location close to Louisville and the Bourbon trail. Definitely on the use again list!

Last weekend was a first trip to Loop Island Wetlands, a short trip over the 64 bridge into New Albany and right down East Main Street till it ends. Loop Island Wetlands is a mid-sized park at 47 acres and is a natural wetlands with a lake border by the Ohio River and Silver Creek. This is not a park for playing sports, for picnics, for small children to play on the playground. This is a park for bird watching and animal sightings and a quiet nature hike in thick woods. Paths add up to maybe a bit over a mile of walking. It was very quiet as far as birds go on my visit here, but I expect that during the migratory season it is thick with birds as the water and trees are very suitable. Silver Creek was very low water this week, it would likely add some interest to the area if it was flowing more freely. I was surprised that there were few mosquitoes but it is definitely a damp place so they may be an issue depending on the recent rains or lack of. Long pants and bug repellent are probably a good idea. There are no real facilities here, just a trash can and a couple benches at the entrance by the flood wall. It is also fairly isolated, with the entrance hidden behind a defunct leather tannery that is falling into interesting (but dangerous to enter) ruins and some sort of ill-maintained shipping warehouse. I don't think I would feel comfortable there alone due to its location but its also not something that would stop me from visiting with a friend and my dogs. For bird watchers, this is a park to put on your list for the right season. For someone just looking for exercise or a stroll, there are better options.

If you need an easy path, there's the loop around the large duck and goose pond. If you want something a little more challenging, the path leading back to the 4H Fair Grounds has a decent elevation and optional stairs. There are multiple playgrounds for kids and a few areas for sports and games. Nearby are also shelters that can be reserved for events. Parking is plentiful and in multiple spots. There is also a growing effort to install more public art, a reading path, and some free-range meadow grasses. I'm hopeful that the trees grow back after the building of the Academy apartments and that more are planted around the path to provide more shade during the hot summer months. But a great, local park!

The park boasts loads of amenities in a well-kept landscape. For bird lovers: there's a gorgeous pond which is visited by a lot of ducks, geese, and local bird friends. There's a great 1.2 mile walking track that circles the park, offering views of the pond and a walk and read (single book pages at stops along the trail) for folks with kiddos. They have two playgrounds, four sheltered areas, restrooms (although I've only seen them open twice - pro tip: go to Aldi across the street from the park if they're closed - fast, easy, and clean!), a few short nature trails, green space, a sand volleyball court, soccer fields, a basketball court, and a heck of a lot of tennis courts. I'm new to roller skating and the tennis courts here are a dream come true! Yes, this may not be their intended purpose, and yes, one tennis player one time may have gotten a bit peeved BUT there are so many courts, you don't have to feel guilty about taking away anyone's ability to play tennis. During the week, I've never found the park too crowded. In the early mornings, virtually empty minus some walkers and tennis players. In the evening, loads more folks but still has never felt too crowded, plus LOTS of dog walkers which always makes me excited to see so many sweet puppy faces strolling around. Basketball games are generally happening. On the weekends, this place does get busy. Shelters are available for rent, so there's often parties taking place, we've seen tennis tournaments, soccer games, and more but with how large the park is, we've never felt overcrowded or like we've lost our personal space and have always been able to find easy parking. I would highly recommend this park any time of day and any day of the week.
