Just west of downtown Salem is a very nice park. It has basketball courts, a shelter, a relaxation…read morearea and an old school playground. But what makes this park special is an area called Riley's Place. Riley's is a playground that is made with dark stained wooden towers, ramps, and equipment. After parking along the street, there is a ramp into the area which is surrounded by a short wooden barrier. Most of the park is elevated with a mulch base underneath and in the open areas. There are more towers than I could count, swings, climbing areas, and an assortment of objects made from wood (cars, turtle, musical instruments). The park seemed to be in good shape though I think the drainage of the open areas could have been a bit better. The parking is very limited to street parking (and not on both sides of the road), so hosting an event here would be difficult. Or perhaps check which way the wind is blowing (and bring earplugs). The gardens are on a hill where the wind carries the smell of rotting carcasses from the butcheries below. (The land is also a few yards from the highway, so the sound of cars is constant). I got used to the sound. I did not get used to the smell. The air is thick with the stench of rotting meat. You can feel it. You must swim your way through it. There is no respite. Every ounce of your breathing air is decaying, sliced animal flesh. I wretched more and more as I made my way, into the wind, to get back to the parking lot. I thought I was going to vomit. The smell has permeated my clothes and I doubt I'll be able to eat until I toss these in the wash and take a long shower. If you've read this far, I'll also add that the tour guide was a wealthy old white man volunteering to work there and he was pretty insensitive to the diversity our group represented - age, gender, race, different bodies and abilities, etc. Tactless jokes. A lot of standing still on hard ground. No escape from the smell even when folks were in physical distress. Too many tangents and asides to make whatever relevant info he might have had worth waiting for. So, yeah. Check the weather and wind direction, consider earplugs, and skip the tour. (I'll try again some day and maybe I'll get to immerse myself in those gorgeous flowers!)

It was nice to have AC in August heat though! We didn't put our air mattress on the bed platform because ours is a queen, not a full. It was also nice to have our air mattress closer to the AC unit! Picnic table outside, works great for our family. We were basically in the cabin to sleep. Bring bikes, kayaks, air mattress, coolers, bedding..... Shower houses and restrooms are decent but can be a walk from your cabin, depending on where you're located. This cabin is the "Persimmon" cabin. We like seclusion, so it worked perfectly for us!

My parents are staying at the camp ground. It's very nice and clean. We went and spent the…read moreafternoon hiking with them at Rose Island. It was really neat! It's a very steep walk down and then back up. My dad and I both have bum knees and the walk down was hard on our knees. It says in several places that trail 3 is longer but not as hard, so we decided to take trail 3 back. I don't know who decided to play a mean trick on people and say trail 3 is easier to take but man they have a sick sense of humor! The mail trail is about a mile down a wide paved road. You could easily drive down it. Trail 3 is a windy, steep up and down, rocky, rooty, dirt trail that is also very narrow. It is not in any way shape or Form easier than the main trail. Oh and did I mention it is about a mile and a half or more? So it's harder and longer than the main trail . See the pictures. We did see more cool stuff on trail 3 than the main trail though. Rose Island itself was really cool. It would have been an amazing place in its hay day!

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens has been on my list of places to visit near Louisville for a while now…read more Last night I had the chance to go for the last Friday of the month Happy Hour/Farmer's Market. Admission was free, though I'd absolutely pay the $12 to visit again and spend more time wandering. Everything is really well maintained and labeled. This is a beautiful place! There's a fairy garden, perfect for kids and anyone else to walk through. There's a cafe with a great balcony overlooking lots of greenery. There's such a lovely variety of trees and flowers. There are benches adequately scattered around the gardens so you can easily find a nice place to sit and soak it all in.
