Lovely afternoon at The Paramount Theatre where we attended a ballet production of Snow White and…read morethe Seven Dwarves. Our tickets were inexpensive for genuinely good view of the stage in row J. Ushers were friendly and eager to assist everyone who needed help finding their seats. The antique decor, paintings of 17th century ladies & gents, and yellow upholstery all give an authentic live theater experience. There was a strange little wall mounted water fixture (see picture) that I really liked even though I'm not sure what it is practically for. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. We expected live instruments and were surprised it was set to prerecorded orchestral music, but the sound quality was great so no worries. My only real complaint is that when we stopped by earlier that afternoon to buy our tickets, the fellow at the window seemed really put out . He answered our questions, but it felt like we were imposing on him. There was no one in line behind us and it's our first time going to a ballet since childhood, so we had some newbie questions. To engage with something like this for the first time is to step outside of our comfort zone, and I wish that the guy helping us had shown a more generous tone in the customer service department. His palpable annoyance very nearly scared us off buying tickets to this show at all.

This month (March 2019), Virginia Opera has 7 performances of Madama Butterfly scheduled. I…read moreattended the penultimate performance at the Carpenter Center two nights ago. This is not a review of Madama Butterfly or Carpenter Center, but how well VO executed it. I believe it was done quite well. Casting was flawless. The role of Cio-Cio-san (Madama Butterfly) seems to be made for mezzo-soprano Danielle Pastin. Her anguish in the final minutes is palpable and contagious. And I cannot imagine a better Suzuki than Kristen Choi. The selection of Carpenter Center as the venue was quite good, although for future performances, I hope VO considers larger venues. It appeared to be sold out. But even at max capacity, the flow of people was very smooth. Acoustics at the Center were quite good, and VO had a "closed caption" screen above the stage for those (like me) that don't know Italian. A plethora of parking options. I chose a parking deck, less than 1/2 block away, $10. See how far $10 gets you in NYC. :) Adequate concessions, at reasonable prices. Lots of ushers, eager to help me find my seat. My only complaint is that they do not have a senior discount. (As does the Williamsburg Opera, for example,) I believe Virginia Opera put it all together quite well. I look forward to more performances from VO in the future.

My server took our order and our entrees showed up before or drinks of water and ginger. I order the salmon with out potatoes but wanted a double portion of the spinach. It came out without the potatoes but not a double portion is spinach. The server said the chef said it was doubled. Ok if you say so. Let's get down to the actual meal, the Salmon was overcooked and the sauce was extremely salty. Like I could feel my blood pressure rising with each bit. The popcorn was cold and salty. It's a wrap for me. I am going back to a regular Regal theater cause cinebistro isn't it.

Apps Both the fried green tomatoes and the baked goat cheese were delicious. The tomato jam in the candied shallots on the goat cheese, made it rich and delightful. And they had enough baguette, which is impressive because usually the bread runs out in most places or something like this. The fried green tomatoes were also rich and indulgent and the peach habanero jelly was a nice bright kick. For entrées we got a couple CMX burgers, the ravioli and the chicken BLT. I usually get the tuna poke bowl, which is always very good but this time I was in the mood for a sandwich so the chicken BLT was a risk, but turned out it paid off. The chicken was cooked perfectly as well as the bacon. Very satisfying. The burgers never disappoint and my son really enjoyed his ravioli with an extra steaks you were on the side.
