You can't get decent Mexican food in North Dakota! OH YES YOU CAN! We're passing through Bismarck and headed home to Texas. We're ending our two month motorhome trip to escape the Texas heat. We have grown tired of pub food and more tired of food that is not good. I Googled best Mexican food in Bismarck. C&T popped up. We went. We ate. We rejoiced. As soon as we sat down our server, Liliana, brought us chips and salsa. The chips were perfect and warm. The salsa was delicious with just enough "heat". Liliana was excellent and charming. We enjoyed a little conversation with her. I had chicken fajitas and my wife had enchiladas. Both were delicious and large portions. We brought half back to the motorhome with us. Liliana even brought us a paper sack for the rest of our chips and container for the salsa. Again, she was excellent. I am NOT one of those guys who says "I am from such and such a place and you cant get good such and such elsewhere. I will admit that good Mexican food is hard to find in some areas. Finding C&T allowed us to have a delicious meal after several days of bad. When we drove up, we thought this might be a corporate franchise, but it is not. It is locally owned. Bravo to David Mendoza and his family. They have put a lot of thought and effort on the interior decor, but more especially the menu. Allow me to say it is second to none of the Texas Mexican restaurants. OH! How could I forget...the frozen house margarita was excellent and large!!! read more

This may be the most unusual Yelp review you'll read, but stick with me. On my first trip to North Dakota, I asked a local, "What's quintessentially North Dakota?" After a long pause, he said, "We have some really good Mexican restaurants." I nearly laughed. Bismarck is over 1,500 miles from the Mexican border! I politely ignored his advice. A couple of days later, after visiting Fort Mandan and driving through some of the state's wide-open, snow-covered countryside, I was starving. After striking out at a couple of restaurants, that local's words came back to me: "We have some really good Mexican restaurants here." A few minutes later, I found Charras, and the parking lot was packed. On a Thursday night, there was already a 20-30 minute wait. That's usually a good sign. From the moment I sat down, the service was outstanding. Chips, salsa, water, and my drink arrived almost instantly, and my waiter had an uncanny knack for showing up exactly when I needed him without ever hovering. I ordered the Camarones a la Diablo with Spanish rice and avocado. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, coated in a rich, buttery pepper sauce with just the right amount of heat. The rice soaked up every bit of that incredible sauce, while the avocado provided the perfect cool contrast. The portion was generous, and every bite was excellent. The moral of the story? Never underestimate the locals. They live there, and they know where the good food is. Thank you, Team Charras, for changing my mind. I may not have planned on returning to North Dakota anytime soon, but thanks to your food--and that unforgettable buttery sauce--I'll happily come back for another visit. read more

I had heard good things about this place and was really excited to go when I was in town. Sadly it fell short of my expectations. We were greeted shortly with a "how many?" vs "hello" which always sets the tone. But our server came over quickly and was very attentive. They have a traveling guacamole station which looks fun but comes with a hefty price tag of $12 for a very small serving...(and dont forget to tip the guacamole guy.) There are only four combos on the menu the rest are entrées. I ordered a combo and added a tamale. My combo had a beef taco, chicken burrito, beans and rice. You get a choice of sauces on top. The red sauce is close to a marinara. I expected something like an enchilada sauce. The server was very kind when I asked to try the green sauce on the side. She offered to remake my order which was nice but would not have saved the dish. The taco was beef, cheese and lettuce. The burrito was a seasoned shredded chicken that had great flavor but nothing else. I guess wrapping it in a tortilla makes it a burrito. The rice and beans were very good, Im guessing house made because it was much better quality than most mexican joints. The tamale was also good but was ruined by the red sauce..go with the green. On to the house margarita. They serve these very large margaritas, there is no smaller size but dont be deceived, the excess is either lemonade or a form of sour mix that was overly sweet. Very little hint of lime nor tequila. My guest had the quinoa bowl which was very unique and very good. The vibe in this place is fun and spacious and seemed relatively clean. Not really impressed with my second visit here. The food was okay and the service was just okay as well. Probably will not come back. We were seated by a large group with one guy talking really, really loudly. It really got annoying. The chips was salsa were probably the highlight. We went here for dinner and I ordered the shrimp tacos. They were delicious! Before our food arrived, we had someone come around with a cart and ask if we wanted fresh guacamole with our chips. We said yes and it was $12. I just wish they were more upfront with the cost. It was amazing and we got it to go since we didn't finish it! We got margaritas and they were delicious! The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming. They did not have black beans, I got a non-vegetarian dish instead. I was a little bummed they didn't have black beans, although the shrimp tacos were amazing! I wish they were more upfront about the cost of guacamole since I don't like ordering things when I don't know the cost of it and hate having to ask or find out at the end of the meal. Rip off.... Complete and entire rip off. 90% of the meal is their old severely over cooked rice with the purred oil beans. Let me start by saying their food is great. Its probably my favorite place to get birra tacos or fajitas with my girlfriend. I went there to dine in for the first time and I have some gripes. When they come to your table as ask if you want guacamole, its not on the house. I suppose I shouldnt have assumed it was free, however they didn't mention that it costed money and came out with the free chips and salsa. It wasnt until after I got the menu that I saw that it costed me 12 dollars. We ordered the deluxe fajitas for two, and when brought it to us it was "loaded," which is an upcharge that I didnt ask for. Honestly I was fine with it and its not that much more, but on top of already being pissed about the expensive guac It kinda soiled my evening. You would never have known that by looking at the restaurant from the outside. It was very nice and clean and had a wonderful ambience. Delicious Mexican food! Came here on a Tuesday night and there was a pretty decent turnout. Arrived and only had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. My table started with the guacamole which is made fresh in front of you. I ordered a house margarita as my drink and the portion was massive. My main dish was the steak tacos which were well marinated and paired well with both salsas. Overall, a great experience from the ambiance, amount of TV's, space from table to table, service speed, and prices. Definitely worth a visit anytime you're in the area. read more

We stopped here while visiting my sister and brother-in-law and really enjoyed the food. The first thing we enjoyed were the chips and salsa (see picture) - the chips were fresh and crispy and the salsa was thick and tasty. The only thing I wouldn't recommend from the evening was the mezcal drink in the new menu (see picture...can't remember the name). I love mezcal, but this drink was not good. For the meal, my wife had the Parrillada (see picture) and we both enjoyed it. I ordered the Chicken Street Tacos (see picture) and thought they were delicious - small (easy to eat) & tasty. Definitely one of the better Mexican restaurants I've been to - you won't regret a stop here. The only knock on the menu...no desserts other than the homemade churros (which were quite expensive). Asked for lemon in our waters and didn't get any without asking a second time. Waitress took our order without writing it down. He asked for a wet burritos with queso and shredded beef. Got shredded beef in a tortilla no extras in it like stated on menu and has red sauce that tasted like spaghetti sauce on top not queso. Send it back and they just attempted to scrape red sauce off and poured queso over it then sides were cold. Not acceptable needed to remake it right. Had fish tacos and they were good with mahi mahi. Till my friend who knows Spanish informed me of what had transpired. That is extremely disrespectful. Some people in Bismarck might not understand Spanish or know what is being said. Within walking distance of our hotel was this really great Mexican restaurant. Normally, you'd expect the standard American/Mexican version, but this seemed a bit more authentic than most. We'd tried coming the previous day, but it was way too crowded with a long wait, so we opted for a different time. We came fairly late the next day, and the wait wasn't nearly as long. The margaritas were great , the menu was extensive, the live guacamole table was really good, and the meal was fabulous. I enjoyed a wonderful dinner last night with my spouse. I had a reposado margarita and my spouse had the house margarita. Then we saw the guacamole station! It's wonderful! We ordered everything they put into the mix and were impressed. They even had extra jalapeño on the side to make it spicier. Lastly we ordered the carnitas with added chile verde. Again we were impressed. The pork was tender, the spice yummy, and a little bit of salsa added to the wrap made the meal perfect! Such a delightful restaurant.
