This was the closest emergency hospital to us. I rang to make sure that they would be able to take my pet. It was really hard to get a hold of them on the phone, presumably because it was so busy. They did a very quick intake on who to expect - breed of dog, name, my name, etc. Since it's during Covid, when I showed up they told me to call. When they were ready for me I brought my dog into the lobby for a quick check from the vet tech. After that she was brought into the back to wait for a doctor to see her. We were asked to wait in the car while this happened. All of the remaining consultations would be done via phone except for pick up/drop off of dog. We were probably in the car for around 2 hours without much news. Afterwards we were told that they did some sort of scan and they were able to identify some sort of mass on her. Unfortunately we found out that an ultrasound wouldn't be possible until Monday which is when their radiologist comes in. They offered to keep her overnight for observation but we really just wanted her home with us. This visit of the scan, consultation, drugs administered, and take home drugs came out to around $600. This really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My dog's annual checkup is a little less than this and since this is an emergency visit, not the worst. We did come back for an ultrasound and it was kind of the same in terms of wait. Super long wait! Probably felt extra long because we were anxious to find out how the pup was. The results of the ultrasound were pretty conclusive. We consulted with our own family vet and their recommendations were the same as the emergency vet that we spoke to as well. The emergency vet that we talked to was very patient on the phone and spoke about my dog like she was a family member of mine. It was pretty reassuring in a very frightening situation. I honestly think that they did a good job with the treatment of my dog. They did their due diligence and weren't pushy with any procedures or recommendations.

My regular vet advised me to go to TEVH immediately where my cat was diagnosed with Vestibular disease, an inner ear issue. I was reassured that he should improve in a couple of weeks. He was prescribed ear drops to clear up some ear bacteria and yeast. Once home he seemed to improved marginally but then stopped eating, had nasal discharge and was lethargic. After several return visits he was admitted on Saturday May 9, it was recommended that a CT scan of the head, thorax and abdomen be done. Results indicated that he had an inner ear blockage and infection that needed surgery. He was to remain in hospital on a nasal feeding tube until surgery for a Bulla Osteotomy - Ventral could occur. I visited him every day. He was very quiet but alert on the days I saw him prior to surgery. On May 13 surgery went well, lots of material (gunk) had been removed from his ear. I was told a steroid for inflammation had been given and he should be feeling better soon. During surgery an esophageal feeding tube was placed so that he could receive medication and food while recovering until he began eating on his own. Cornish Rex cats do not have a lot of body fat and are very sensitive to anesthesia. This is common knowledge regarding the breed and I have been told about this by previous vets and by breeders. Rexs need to be kept warm. Thursday morning I expected to hear about discharge details. Instead I heard that he was still a little slow to come around from surgery and they would like to keep him for another day. Lots of reassurance he was doing well and that I could come and visit him until his discharge on Friday. At Thursdays visit he appeared heavily sedated and not very responsive. The tech said they had him on a warning blanket and he looked like he shivered at one point. I noticed that his face was quite dirty and he had matter around his mouth and dried urine on his back legs that I tried to clean off. During the visit he coughed twice, a very deep phlegmy wet cough that was not reassuring at all. Thursday evening I asked the vet if he was getting pneumonia because he coughed twice and sounded really awful. I heard no that this was from the anaesthetic and he was actually sounding better. I was told his lungs were X-rayed and there was no sign of pneumonia. I called later that evening after 9 p.m. to get an update and heard that Jerry was doing great, they were weaning him off supplemental oxygen and he had peed twice. Friday morning when I saw TVEH number come up as a call at 10:30 a.m. I thought.... good, I can go and pick him up. Instead the vet calling identified himself as a critical care vet. He said that Jerry had double pneumonia and sepsis and that I should come right away. He was in septic shock when I arrived and I was told his body temperature and heart rate were low. He was under a heating blanket and non responsive. Later that day instead of bringing him home as planned I had to euthanized him. After asking I learned that his inner ear infection was positive for E. coli bacteria. I am aware that E-coli bacteria can be resistant to standard and generally prescribed antibiotics and can require different and more aggressive antibiotics. How does a cat go from nothing but positive reports to pneumonia and sepsis in such a short period of time? Even after having asked about the possibility of pneumonia the night before. I don't believe that he was being monitored as closely as he should have been. I am left with a feeling that those entrusted with his care were not paying attention. Throughout the entire process I was also left feeling like TVEH was more concerned that the escalating bill for his care was paid up and current, which it was. In future I would have to think long and hard about returning to TEVH. There are alternatives and other available emergency hospitals in the GTA. Surgery always comes with risks. Those risks were mitigated by receiving reassuring and positive reports at every contact and then the worst possible thing occurs, it doesn't make sense and doesn't fit. My advice to anyone reading this review is if time allows seek an alternative opinion. Check out other emergency care hospitals because they exist. Ask that less intrusive options be tried first. I trusted my cat's care to TEVH and I am left feeling that they let us both down. He paid for it with his life.

We took our dog to another vet and didn't tell them where we were going. everything resolved including surgery, 2 night stay and a month of food, for less than 4K. we spent 6k at AEC and all they did was tests. When I raised the issue of blocking the transfer the management refused to consider any wrong doing. this place is owned by Vet strategy who sets their pricing and is impossible to reach. I took my cat to Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham last weekend after noticing he seemed unwell. We waited for 3-4 hours to be seen (even though the waiting area was empty), which was frustrating, but we understood that it was an emergency clinic. When we were finally seen, we were quoted $4900 for two nights of treatment (enemas, stomach pumping with laxatives, and IV fluids) or $3600 for one night with the same treatment. We were told that our cat had a condition called mega colon, and that this treatment would help get things moving. We opted for the one-night stay. The vet did call us during the stay and said that they had taken an xray and things looked like they were improving. When we picked him up, he was in significantly worse condition than when we dropped him off. His rear end was covered in feces and had mucous hanging from his mouth and all down his chest. I believe the clinic should have made some attempt to help clean him up as we had a scheduled pick up time. There was no vet available at pick-up to tell us how our cat was doing. Considering the amount of money we had paid, you would think the vet could take a moment to let us know how the cat was doing. To make matters worse, they sent us home with two medications but no pain medication, even though it was clear that our cat was in extreme pain. They told us to take him to our regular vet for further care the following day At our regular vet, we were given two options: surgery (which was not guaranteed to resolve the problem permanently and it would likely return quickly again) or to put him down. We were told the impacted feces were too large to pass through the pelvis. We had two xrays at the emergency clinic and were never told this. We decided to put him down, as it was clear he was suffering. Our cat was only 11 years old, and it was a heartbreaking decision to make. What really frustrates us about this experience is that the emergency vet did not clearly communicate how critical his condition was. We were made to believe that the one night treatment would help him and that we were giving him a chance. The lack of transparency and care is something we will never forget. I want others to be aware of our experience and consider the level of communication and care they expect when trusting their pets to an emergency clinic. I wish this situation had been handled differently, and I am devastated by the loss of our cat.

My pug and his eye issues; walked away feeling talked down to like I wasted their time. Even apologized for it, like I enjoy wasting my own time and money. Also had a 250 dollar credit I found out 5 years later. So bizarre, no one could tell me how or why I wasn't updated. I can take rude Vets, I really don't care -health of my dogs over any doctors ego for sure. But the biggest red flag overall was how dirty it was (I was in 4 rooms total, unfortunately zero over covid-19 and I don't even want to imagine what that was like). On Monday, May 5, I urgently requested a refill for my pet's critical eye medication, which had run out three days earlier. Nicole never returned my calls that day despite repeated follow-ups. On Tuesday, I was told the medication was essential and ready for pickup. When I arrived, one medication was incorrect, and the other was labeled "for clinic use only." I was promised a corrected and urgent delivery the next morning at no charge--but nothing arrived. On Wednesday, Nicole admitted she hadn't checked her messages, and only arranged for delivery after I paid. Still, the medication never came. I called again that night and canceled the order, deciding to go through my regular vet. Despite this, the medication was delivered Thursday morning--too late. When I spoke to Nicole, she blamed the courier and refused to take any responsibility. I then spoke with Morgan, the HR manager, who was shockingly rude and dismissive. She didn't apologize for the mistake or Nicole's negligent behavior during an emergency, and instead told me to find another facility to care for my "fluff baby." I'm beyond disappointed by this lack of professionalism and empathy. Mishandling critical medication could have seriously harmed my pet. I'll be filing a formal complaint. I do not recommend VEC's Ophthalmology department to anyone who values timely, responsible care.

We felt like we were put in a situation where our emotions and fear were taken advantage of in a very unfair way. We wished we had brought our cat earlier to VRH so that he would be given better care and correct directives. We would highly recommend VRH as the whole team is very patient, helpful and attentive although we waited for 4 hours, but it's worth the waiting. It is an emergency animal hospital, so it is understandable the vet seeing the patients by the triage protocol. By the way, there is plenty of parking at the front.

The nurse who was at front desk immediately knew how to handle the situation and I was very grateful. I was an absolute mess. She was very mindful and made sure I had water to drink, and gave me some time in a silent room to allow me to grieve. She asked if I was comfortable with her temporarily taking my baby away so thát the head vet could properly announce her passing, and lovingly returned her with a large blanket wrapped around her. She then walked me through the process and let me take as much time as possible to address end of life options (as non-clinical as possible). I appreciated that she was so empathetic and very caring. It was what I needed at the moment. A week later I received a very heartfelt card with condolences. I just wanted to write back weeks later to say thank you for your kindness and warmth in a time of crisis. I'm a shell of a woman right now and sometimes I keep replaying the entire experience in my head, but I very much appreciate that my baby was tenderly taken care of even after her death.

While the veterinary care provided initially was worrying given that an examination was little more than looking at the dog and giving them a treat. The third veterinarian proved to be excellent in providing thorough examinations and providing options/recommendations which best fit my pets needs. Unfortunately while understandably not all items were covered by the puppy-plan the extra items were clearly predatory. Preventative pills were no less that 3+ times more expensive. An x-ray was just shy of $1000. Post operative pain medication which was clearly included in the puppy-plan was quoted as being $250. Referencing the puppy-plan contract which clearly indicated that "post operative" pain medication was included management explained that the "plan" provided pain medication was only covered "after the operation while the dog was still in hospital". After questioning this charge it was reduced by half and management provided a further "complementary" 10% discount. Notwithstanding their level of professional service and fixed cost overheads as is evidenced by their facility I was prepared to pay a reasonable premium for their services. However I cannot recommend this establishment given their predatory practice of leveraging client vulnerability toward maximizing their profits while disregarding their contractual obligations. Don't be fooled by their "Happy Face" posturing...their hand is in your pocket the whole time you are there.
