The wine was very good. Very good variety of wine. I had a tasting in which you get 5 for 15. Which I didn't think was too bad. The service was terrible very unfriendly. They blew us off I am assuming because we are not regulars. We ordered a pizza and they gave it to someone else by accident. Instead of feeling bad, they were dismissive of us. The lady on the table who got our pizza apologized. But the workers seemed to ignore us. Nice place but if you want a friendly easygoing experience skip it and go to another winery. Gave it a two because the unfriendliness brought down our night. Then my husband went up to the counter to ask a question she ignored him and talked to others behind us. I love it when I can give a 5-star review unreservedly. This winery is worth the drive, regardless of where you call "home." We've been patrons for years, and they never disappoint. Atmosphere is friendly and positive. The music events are always fun. The food is a good pairing with the wine, and the wine... So many good options! My favorite (which is always on my Christmas wish list) is the Chateau Rouge. But I also really favor the Marco V port and the Ruby port. Take the drive and treat yourself! Oh, and bring your dog(s) along. They're welcome too, which was a major deciding factor on a road trip! :) read more

My friend and I went on a road trip, and decided to stop by on our way home. We were blown away! We recently returned from Mendoza, Argentina, visiting 10 wineries throughout our vacation. However, we can confidently say that Chateau St. Croix wines provide a strong comparison to those we had throughout Mendoza. We love our Malbec and the Thoroughbred Red was truly outstanding! Do yourself a favor and make the trip to Chateau St. Croix, the service, atmosphere and especially the wine list will be your new favorite! We were going to do a "quick tasting" not long after, we walked out with 10 bottles! We will be back to try all the whites, I'm sure they are just as brilliant! read more

Five stars is for the great tasting wines available. There are not many local wineries that have decent tasting wine and more than one to boot. Marco V is an exceptional red blend and a must try for wine enthusiasts and for the white wine lovers, the Wisconsin White and Minnesota White are crisp and refreshing. The front of the Chateau looks like an Italian estate and the inside is inviting and appealing but the venue center in the back, leaves you wanting more. read more

I purchased the groupon for tasting for 4. We each got 5 credits for tasting (some of wine was 2 credits), 2 cheese plates, and some chocolates. We also got a $10 credit to spend on a bottle of wine, so overall it was a pretty good deal. My parents were visiting from out of town and they have never been wine tasting before. The staff at chateau were great with explaining the process and making recommendations for them. The cheese plate was very generous with large pieces of cheese and good variety. I do wish we were told what the different kinds were, as we were left guessing. The wine was delicious and I felt the staff did make good recommendations and did a good job of explaining what to expect from each wine. The space is beautiful either plenty of seating. It was raining the day we went and we were happy to find there was a lot of seating indoors. It's also one of the few wineries that's open during the week. I would definitely recommend the drive (especially the fall, it is beautiful) and check out chateau. They have great wine and wonderful hosts. read more

I've never been to a chateau before. It's just beautiful and I have lots of pics on FB. You all know as a non drinker I'm hardly qualified to be a judge in a wine contest. But I'm more than qualified to judge a pure maple syrup contest. Thus my first trip to St. Croix Falls last Saturday. As you walk in there is a large retail area of wine and then some, oils, vinegars, cheese. There is a nice party room to rent out and a group was having a baby shower. Adam was heading this up and Basil got a sample of white MN wine, so light and refreshing. Then on the grounds, the maple syrup vendors were in the middle. On the left there was a barbeque truck. Not selling that, but pancakes. Some of the best I've ever had. Next year not so many donuts first. Of course I had the great syrup to put them on. Syrup is serious business in WI, and I got to judge 8 samples and I wouldn't turn down any of them, but me and 2 others found a winner. This place has so many events for the community. I'm glad I stumbled onto this one. It's a great ride from MN. Next year I'm staying 2 nights. read more

Beautiful grounds and building but the stars are the wines! Marco V is a favorite for me. I think just about anyone will find something they will like. If someone is an absolutely "no" on wine, there is beer available. Nice selection of cheeses, food trucks usually on site for events. read more

Stopped by the Chateaux St. Croix Winery this past weekend for their fall festival and had a great time. With the festival we got three free wine tastings and they had food and art vendors set up behind the winery. They also had authentic live German music. The Chateaux St. Croix is an awesome place to stop on a weekend road trip. The building itself is worth the trip as it's modeled after an authentic European chateaux. It's a beautiful piece of architecture, and the wine isn't bad either. They mostly specialize in red wines. Take advantage of the tour of their vineyard and winery. Drive up on a fall day and enjoy the beautiful fall colors. read more

So I was a little thrown off by the ticket situation. - you pay $7 for 1 ticket, which can be used for wine tasting, a glass of wine or a wine glass. Immediately I knew I wanted to do a tasting, regardless of what that meant. Imagine my surprise when your one ticket really meant 5 wine "tastes" (roughly a 3-4 oz pour). Their whites are on the sweet side, as are their rosés, but their reds tend to be on the drier side. They have probably the largest selection of dessert wines and ports I've seen in the region. We attended the grape stomp festival, which was super fun - there were vendors and two food trucks and a competition you can enter to stomp your own grapes. The staff were all super friendly and knowledgeable. They have a $12 cheese plate with 5 varieties of cheese and you can add meat for $8. The cheese was plenty to share between 3 of us. The decor and setting are equally beautiful, definitely worth the trip. read more

Yet another review that is late, but I always get around to them sooner or later. I spent two weeks in Minnesota and Wisconsin. As a Sommelier I had to try the local wines. Wines are spring up everywhere. Most of the reds I had in the two states were either syrupy or way too sweet, I really wished they would stick to whites or roses. Now about this vineyard. Beautiful place and friendly staff. The main reason I only gave a 4 was because of the tickets for wine thing. Very confusing and not at all needed. Please act like a real winery and offer a tasting price and a per glass or bottle price, it's much easier. Along with that the reds were not very good. Some had promise, but this is just not the area to be growing Cabs and Pet Sirahs. I knew that I wanted to have a great bottle of wine to share with my wife. Northern reds just aren't that great, whites can be iffy, but roses are usually great. And they had a dry rose which I love. And it was exceptional. Now the true reason they deserve a 5 star is because of Torre. She was friendly and knew the history of the winery. But she had something I hadn't expected in a northern winery, knowledge. Having been the Estate Ambassador for Concannon Vineyards in Livermore and being one of the Somms at Walt Disney World, it was my job to know more than just the wines that I was selling. Torre has this quality and I was much impressed. She also showed it with no arrogance which is far too among Somms. Keep her, because I know many a winery in California that would love to have her mix of knowledge and kindness. She simply made our day. read more

We purchased a groupon good for tour, tastings, and snacks for two. So did lots of other people! We made reservations for the tour as directed. The tour was normally $6 for 20 minutes or so for two loud rooms to see. Not worth it. They had scheduled probably 50 people for the tour time we picked, which was 40 people too many for those small rooms. No one could hear. Lame start. After the tour was the tasting time, normally $5 for 5 tastings. Tasting sizes are 1 ounce--not very much to get a decent taste in my opinion. The snack plate wasn't anything special. We did get a take home wine glass ($6). Total NORMAL cost: $22/person for tasting and tour and glass, plus more for the snack plate. The groupon was around $22/2-people, so basically buy one get one free. We were glad we didn't pay full price for anything that's for sure-- Atmosphere: A little too fakey with the castle-theme meets french garden. After purchasing a bottle of wine, I read the label that said produced and bottled in California. After a few questions about that with the lady who sold it to me behind the counter--I learned aside from the Port, all their wines are really California wines because of the type of climate and growing conditions we have here. Whoa, I'm guessing I'm not the only one who things the wines with the Chateau St. Croix label are actually from Chateau St. Croix. It was like seeing the real wizard of oz--I was bummed, but whatever, the wine (Cabernet) was good so who really cares (unless you were excited to drink local like me). When I went outside and talked to the tasting guy who asked me how I liked the wine, I said I did, and mentioned the "I didn't realize its' almost all from California!" He initially started saying no, why, what do yo umean? why no, it's all from here". I told him the label said California. He said it must be a miss-print. I said the lady inside just got done telling me all these things about why it's impossible for MN or WI vineyards to have a true wine from only the grapes from their vineyard (aside from making Ports). I was a little like...um, get your stories straight here... So, it was a nice day for a road trip in the St. Croix Valley. For the price, for the quality, I'll keep exploring other places. read more

Best winery that I have been to in the midwest to date! Super cute little castle in the country - nice setting, medieval decorations, etc. I loved it. The wine - also amazing - they get their grapes mostly from cali and some they grow - but let's be honest - the MN grapes 80% of the time just don't seem to produce that great of wine. They have a lot of local art for sale. The cheese and cracker platter was really delcious with an assortment of unique cheeses - and the wine - oh the wine - wow - It was good - definitely as good as or better than many that I have had out in cali - they know how to make wine there. For a tasting you get 5 tokens for the tastes - but at least for us - they didn't really take the tokens all the time, so we really got to taste all we wanted - which was great! And don't worry - they were repaid handsomely since I brough home 5 bottles and my friends both got 4 .. . musta been drunk :) - but seriously - its just that good. I'm excited to go back in the spring and see the garden out front that was covered by snow - and they also have a spring and fall festival - looking forward to more trips up that way! read more

The last stop of my wine tour. We had our tasting in a lovely private room with beautiful lighting. We were guided through 5 or 6 samples from the sommelier, who was really helpful. We also got a tour of the their production as well, it was cool to see how their process works. I bought some of their Thoroughbred Red. They also make some nice ports. I purchased the Groupon and it is what I would have spent anyhow for tastings and a snack so I did not feel ripped off. However they are very "tight-as$ed" with the cheese and truffles it comes with---they have plates already made up and you get perhaps 8-10 crackers all delicious I think probably Carr's. 5 small pieces of cheese proably about 2 ounces of cheese total and both truffles I had were delicious but I did not get to pick them and they were not the 3.00 ones in the case. I enjoyed every wine I had however and would certainly go back and just purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy. I purchased a bottle of the Merlot because you could not "taste" it as it was only sold by the bottle for 25.00. It was decent but not as good as the other wines I had tasted that day. They have plenty of seating areas for everyone indoors and out. It is a little out of the town so it is a gorgeous drive and the colors of the trees are absolutely gorgeous this time of year. The staff could do a better job at talking to the visitors---I understand this is a busy winery and they probably get tired of making small talk but that is the nature of this business. read more

This Winery, when driving in, makes you feel like you are heading to a beautiful castle! Grapes line the driveway, beautiful cement lions and benches almost makes you feel like you are in Ireland or some England. I couldn't wait to open the door to my castle!! We open the big door and inside, you come to realize that this poor castle is having an identity crisis!! The inside does not match the outside. There are a few mismatched tables inside with Deer Heads on the wall and NO, this is not the only reason I didn't like the interior. Nothing seemed to fit together. I liked the bar. It was pretty. They had a few high tables with stools that seemed too modern for the Castle and then one larger table in the middle of the room which fit more with the Castle concept. There is a small deli which serves cheese and chocolates. To the back is a canopy area with tables and a reception area for weddings which overlook the vineyard. It looked like a nice venue for a party. Service was horrible. We had a groupon and it was for a wine tasting and cheese and truffle platter. No one acknowledged us for what seemed like a long time before we finally bullied our way to the bar area. A woman finally helped us but she most definitely was not warm and fuzzy. The wines we were able to choose our tastings from (5), were very limited, all red, and mostly dry. We threw almost every single tasting in the "reject" bucket. I did not like one wine I tasted. The cheese and truffle platter was a paper plate with an assortment of cheeses, some dry, hard, crackers, and one tiny unwrapped truffle, and one ferrero rocher. I fought for the Ferrero Rocher but my niece said the truffle was "Ok". Definitely not worth getting but the girls in the deli were the nicest in the bunch and even gave us some extra cheese. I liked the glass that we were able to keep!!! It was a nice big wine glass with the Winery's name engraved. The nicest biggest glass of the day but woman can not live on Glass alone!! With no good wine to fill it, I more than likely will not return! read more

We were driving by and saw a sign for the winery. There were about 3 other couples in the main tasting room while we were there, and the man behind the tasting area gave us his full attention and explained the history of the winery. He told us to walk around and see the horses and the grounds. It is definitely the smallest winery I have visited, but the building's exterior is beautiful, and would be a wonderful setting for a small private event. The wine was decent, but then again, I'm not always a fan of Midwestern wines. It is definitely worth the trip if you are in the area! read more

Realizing that a pre-purchased 2 for 1deal was expiring over the weekend, we called to see if we could get in for a tasting this past Saturday afternoon. They were able to accommodate us. Yeah! What luck. Note on travel time: from the Highland Park area of St. Paul, it took us well over an hour to drive there via 35E and Hwy 8 (maybe more like 1.5 hr.) When we arrived after our pleasant drive, we found the parking lot filled with vehicles and an impressive-looking tasting house. Although not warmly greeted upon entering, we were given some wooden tokens to be used at their tasting counter. The inside of this place is as impressive as its exterior. Very old european-feeling. Fortunately for us, we were guided in our tasting by two very amiable and knowledgeable staff members who enjoyed taking about wines and food. Some of the wines we tasted were very good (because many of the grapes they use in their wines are from certain areas of California). It's nice they have small packets of oyster crackers available at the tasting counter. I would return again and pay a $6 tasting fee. I think their wines a good and well worth sampling However, I would by-pass any special offers that include keeping your wine glass, and receiving a small cutting board, a cheese sampler and truffles for two. read more

I really liked this winery in terms of sweeter wines than Dragonfly Winery. The wine tasting is only $6 per person for 5-6 selections. This was a lot cheaper than Dragonfly Winery however my fiancée liked the wines at Dragonfly. I actually liked the wines here since there were more sweeter wines to my liking. The wow factor is really the outside since the inside is a bit drab with stuffed deer head and flags. Anyways, it took us only 15 minutes to do the tasting and walk around the grounds. Totally worth it to visit this place but unfortunately this place closes early at 5PM. read more

This was the last on a stop of vineyards over the Veteran's Day weekend. This is a recently established winery which uses California grown grape in addition to Minnesotan. ENVIRONMENT: Faux European but exterior does not have that aged "old world" look to it - perhaps in twenty years or so. Large interior with large fireplace. Two tasting bars with plenty of room. Gift items for sale - expensive compared to other wineries. SERVICE: Friendly staff - offered to let us use one token instead of two to taste higher end wines, although these wines were decanted the day before. WINE/FOOD: Midwest version of tapas offered in the form of cheese and crackers, etc., The higher end wine was very pricey for the content (which was no doubt reflected by decanting the previous day). In the end we chose to buy one bottle of the Grand Reserve Chardonnay which deserves a special mention especially since I dislike chardonnays in general. OVERALL: This winery has potential especially if they continue their trend of using California grapes. If you want a winery that is doing excellent work with local grapes try Elmaro Vineyard in Trempealeau, Wi or Villa Bellezza in Pepin, WI. read more

This place is really beautiful, but their wine is nasty! We did a groupon tasting and every single wine we tasted was so bad we didn't finish the sample. They also gave us a so-called "cheese and chocolate" plate that was pretty much a rip off and had been refrigerated for hours, so the chocolates were rock-hard and the cheese was all hard as well. If the point of a groupon is to introduce people to your business and entice them to come back, serving nasty wine and a cheap chocolate and cheese plate is not the way to go. Also, I got the impression that the vineyard is the owner's hobby and not really a serious business. The tour guide acted like a used car salesperson and the tour was so scripted...just left a bad taste in my mouth (literally). read more

This place used to be a favorite. The salmon plate with a glass of their Thorough bread red was really nice. Event dinners were always hit or miss but we had some really good food and great times here. The owners used to live in the coach house behind the Chateau bldg. Not sure what is up any more. I don't care about being served on a paper plate but now the salmon plate is an unappetizing globe of smoked salmon. The cheese plate is pretty dry and tasteless. The wait staff doesn't seem to care. Had one nice woman who served us wine and she did warn me that the thorough bred red changed. For sure it had. The price per bottle went up to like $27 a bottle and the glass I had tasted like cheap grape juice. This time we had brought some guests from the city. Needless to say, they were not impressed. I guess the life cycle on this place is about run out like so many places: they start out great, get a loyal following like is, and go downhill. The owner no longer appears to live in the coach house behind the winery. Maybe that says it all. We won't be back. Can't believe how much money I've spent on this place over the years. I was here a little over a year and a half ago and would give the experience a solid 3. Good wine but the service/tasting wasn't super attentive back then. My wife and I found ourselves back in St. Croix Falls over the weekend and I don't know what exactly has changed but the whole atmosphere was worlds apart from our previous visit. Everyone there is extremely happy to be there, extremely knowledgeable and seems to really want to educate you about their wine without trying to talk "above" you. During the tasting one person pours a couple wines for you and if they get tied up with another couple another person steps right in and keeps your tasting moving. They were up-selling their more expensive wines not out of necessity but because they seemed to really enjoy them. The grounds and building itself couldn't be more beautiful, my only gripe would be they don't have enough wines from local grapes, but that being said I thoroughly enjoy their wine. read more

I love this place. They have great wine, great cheeses, and once a month (weather permitting) they have oven-fired pizzas under the backyard tent. Their prices are also not bad for as good as everything is. You can bring a picnic lunch, buy a bottle of great wine, and picnic and stroll the grounds, or do tours and/or wine tasting.
