There's another coffee place nearby that we wanted to try, but it's not open on Sundays, so Kaldi's…read moreit was! That may have been for the best. I know Kaldi's has labor issues and might be paying their employees in coupons they can exchange for day-old baked goods, but that's neither here nor there for me, because I don't work there. And I know they once had a reputation for charging entirely too much for coffee and what have you, as if they were Whole Paycheck, but that's been rendered at least somewhat moot by the fact that everyone does that now. (I'd mention whom we have to blame for that, but I don't think it's necessary.) What a lovely location this place is in. If you time your Sunday morning run just right, you can arrive right as people are assembled, with their luggage, at the little train station next to the parking lot. Hopefully, they're not about to hop a train somewhere for tragic reasons. I used to travel by bus on occasion, and I've heard some stories. The inside is lovely. If they're overcharging, they at least spent some of it on the decor. The lights are dimmed, like at a fine-dining establishment. If you can convince a girl on Hinge to meet you somewhere for coffee, and you don't want her to see what exactly you look like, this place would be perfect. Also, if she's willing to meet IRL, and possibly give it up, in exchange for a $9 latte, chances are you're not gonna want to see what exactly *she* looks like. I've had the breakfast burrito from most local coffee places and only really cared for the one from Upshot, which might be the best thing I ever had in a restaurant. I figured Kaldi's offering wouldn't be anything to write home about but I'd try it anyway, for the sake of citizen food journalism. If this place has the unmitigated gall to charge a Section 8 rent payment for something you can get in the freezer at QT (with a free coffee, if you use the app), people need to know. Turns out that wasn't really the case. Their breakfast burrito isn't anything you just have to have, but it isn't half bad either. The ingredients are a cut above something you might get at a fast food restaurant, and I appreciate the way that the eggs, bacon, potatoes and what have you all seemed to be cooked together rather than layered on separately like in some elaborate bean dip. The bacon is greasier than you'd expect, in a good way, some of which carries over to the eggs and potatoes. A side of sour cream or salsa, or a bottle of Cholula on the table, would have really set it off. I guess coffee is what they're known for. I've had their regular coffee once or twice and recall liking it, but I've heard some people complain that it tastes burnt. But I know some people say the same thing about the coffee at Starbucks, and I might be the only person who likes that. (And yet they somehow manage to stay in business.) Kaldi's iced vanilla latte is surprisingly complex, for what it is. It's not overly sweet, and it's much more coffee-forward than the version I had a week before at Kentzo. Sometimes these things taste more like milk than anything else, which is fine with me, because I love milk, but this is probably how they're supposed to taste. If it's true what they say, that the labor here is not completely voluntary in nature, then at least they're running a tight ship. The consequences for subpar performance must be positively brutal.

Very excited they got a seasonal menu with Ube latte and Strawberry Banana Matcha on. I decided to get the Matcha and it was decent! Definitely need to stir it at the beginning and occasionally because the matcha kind of gets separated. However, it was $9 with no add on or anything, pretty steep in my opinion.

But why would you want to eat food from a coffee shop? I've been visiting coffee shops on the reg for the past several weeks, and I've repeatedly made the mistake of ordering breakfast sandwiches, burritos and what have you. I have no one to blame for this but myself. I knew going in that it wasn't a good idea. I just couldn't help myself. This must be how people end up on drugs. There was a race going on nearby, when I visited 23 West yesterday. I wasn't involved, though I was there in a running capacity. My running group just happened to be meeting there. We ran a few miles in the neighborhood before our visit. By the time we got there, there was quite a crowd. The contrast between the sweaty, disheveled runners and the sleek, modern decor was striking. This place has an interior like some showroom where you're pressured into taking out a high-interest loan to purchase jewelry of questionable provenance. Are they in cahoots with the bank next door? Both buildings, I notice, have a similar facade. 23 West is painted the same shade of gray as a post-McPlayPlace-era McDonald's, when they started trying to look like a Chipotle. Some girls on apps prefer it if you didn't take them to get coffee. It's not expensive enough. If you can get one to agree to such a date, you might consider bringing them here. It's classy. The coffee is good too. I went with the Raspberry Cheesecake Cold Brew, a seasonal item. It was magnificent. I ordered mine to-go, so I could enjoy it at the tables out front, and in case 12 showed up. They give it to you in a tall plastic cup with no lid, filled to the point where it's nearly impossible to carry without spilling, presumably so you can sample the delicious cheesecake-like froth and probably get a little bit of it in your mustache. You can't really sip it with a straw. The coffee itself is surprisingly robust, given the depth of the raspberry flavor. It's an odd idea for a drink, and not something I'd usually order, but the execution was on point. I also went with a Cherry Almond Scone. I had to eat something, for emotional reasons, and it looked interesting. I'm no expert on scones, but I enjoyed it. It may have been the most dense baked good I've ever eaten, to the point where it could probably be used as a weapon, in a pinch. I know it's supposed to be similar to a biscuit and that in England, where they're consumed on the reg, a biscuit is known as a cookie (why?). It's a lot dryer than even the biscuits at a Lee's Famous Recipe, but intentionally so, I guess because it's designed to be eaten with a beverage. A hot beverage is probably ideal, but I made it work with a cold brew. It's the kind of thing you don't realize until after the fact. Next time I'll know. If and when I do return, I'll be dressed as a magician, possibly with a young lady in tow.

This one did, so I walked over from the restaurant where we were after lunch. This is a very pleasant shop with lots of available seating. It just has a rather modern look, and it was very nice and clean. I came up to talk to a friendly barista. The pour over menu was a bit confusing because there wasn't a lot of information directly on the menu, I asked about one pour over because I had never tried a bean of that origin before. She had good things to say about it, but she said that, if I wanted something fruity or floral to try Haro Wachu from Ethiopia. It was as if she read my mind because I had been wanting to try a natural processed Ethiopian. I'm really glad I took her suggestion! It was one of the best cups of coffee I've ever tried. I didn't taste so much of a note of fruit in it, but I still loved it! I made sure to make a note of what it was in case I have room for more beans at home and want to order it. So, I do wish it was easier to tell what each pour over was in the menu (They have a lot at reasonable prices!). However, I left there thoroughly impressed with the coffee. If you are out on Delmar Loop, they are definitely worth visiting.

The staff here are always so nice and polite, and this is a great spot to get away from all the noise when you want to relax or get a little work done. I ordered a honey lavender iced latte. It was smooth, creamy, and not too sweet. He honey and lavender mesh so well and you can taste all of the flavor. They sell pastries as well. I ordered a ham and Swiss croissant. The croissant was fluffy and flakey, and the warm ham and cheese brought comfort to my belly. They were out of the marmalade that comes with it so i wasn't able to taste that. If you use your capital one card, you get 50% off your drink. You also get access to their meeting rooms and private bathrooms. There is plenty of seating inside.

The menu also included light food options like sandwiches and pastries which are convenient if you want something quick. Another big perk is you get 50% off drinks if you have a Capital One or Discover card which makes it a much better value and a reason to come back.
