We drove around town to see the old buildings. Mostly crumbling, vacant structures with faded signs painted on the building's exterior bricks. The logos once proudly announced the owner's name and services. Essential then, now ancient. Sad. We imagined what the town was like, when oil was life in Oklahoma. The buildings then housed businesses that employed many, put food on the table and provided opportunities for several generations. Yale, a living ghost town now. The massive building has a Spanish architectural hint and colors that suggests, Mexican food can be found here. It is now Chava's. It covers almost a city block. This place probably rocked in the old days. The parking lot being full of oilfield worker's trucks at noon during the week and family cars on the weekend. Now well worn, the neglected exterior matches the town; weeds, the structures only landscaping. Today, the entire declining population of Yale could probably fit in the building. The parking lot was vacant when we arrived. The restaurant survives, thanks to dedicated locals and with the help of hungry sports fans headed to Stillwater for the Saturday game. Currently its ranking as the "Best Mexican Food in Yale" is unchallenged. The food is served on hot plates, properly prepared and good portions. The service is friendly and the restaurant is relatively clean, but noticeably warn. We ordered one of the combination plates, a relleno and a beef enchilada. On their own both were good; but the red sauce on the meal didn't work. Closer in taste to marinara spaghetti sauce than anything Mexican. The salsa served with the chips was similar in taste. Very mild, oregano flavor prominent. When we ordered, the young man offered three options: white queso, yellow queso or red sauce. We asked about the red sauce. He described it as "like chili. Nope, it is more like spaghetti sauce. The beans and rice were good. Underneath the sauce, was a nice big, fresh poblano, filled with cheese, battered and fried, accompanied with a mildly seasoned, beef filled enchilada. My recommendation, order queso on anything that comes with a sauce. It will be very mild, but better than the spaghetti sauce. If you are a person that finds a Tic Tac to be a little too spicy; you'll love the mild salsa. read more

Service is outstanding & very friendly, food is plentiful, served hot & is delicious. For someone like me, who appreciates the quality of the food & service, and doesn't care as much about ambiance so long as it's clean, this is a hidden gem. I've driven almost an hour to eat here several times & will return as often as I can. read more

I was a bit worried when we stopped here with a group of 18 people and the last reviews of this place did not look so great. However, this place was fabulous. Salsa taste store bought but ,Queso was delicious and food came out quickly with a great price. We had an assortment of different things but the enchiladas supremes was my favorite. Arrived 7pm first time passing through Saturday night. Small dining room two large tables with very loud noisy kids not well behaved. Acoustics were horrible. They should think about having some nice back ground music. Server was very young and nice but I had to ask twice for silverware once my meal had arrived. Then I heard another table ask for silverware after their food had arrived. Salsa seemed like it was from a jar not home made. My entree was delicious though. I think the floor could use a good scrubbing throughout the place. read more

We've been coming to this restaurant for awhile now. It is by far, my absolute favorite mexican restaurant! We have been known to drive more than 30 minutes to get to eat there! They have THE BEST fajitas you'll find around. Their salsa is delicous! And when they have them, their chili rellenos are the best thing on their menu! Their service has been a little rocky for the past couple years but I try not to hold it against them. Their current staff consists of some young kids but they're polite and they do their best. I just wish they could get some more chili rellenos in!!! read more

I usually order the taco family pack to go. It comes with 20 tacos and I usually get steak. You can also add cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and you can have hard shell or soft shell. Then I order the White Queso to put on top of my taco and it's delicious. read more

This place was our GoTo place when we did not want to go into Stillwater. The food is inconsistent at best. They have started to go downhill over the last year. It used to be really good but for some reason they are using the microwave more and more. You can tell because the tortillas get hard fast and the plates are steaming hot but the cheese is not melted. Hope you all are ready this and please fix this. read more

I am very disappointed. After this being my favorite place for the last 6 years. I will not be going back. My daughter got married and they move to a ranch out that direction. I spent almost every weekend at their house for their daughters birth and we would order from Chavez for 1 meal every time. It remained my favorite place until this weekend. Our order was terrible. I usually offer compliments because complaints are too easy and numerous. We have had orders that were wrong or off but never like this one. So I decided to call and talk about my concern to the management instead of posting it to the world. Needless to say management could not have cared less and was laying blame everywhere but not taking any responsibility. She offered for us to bring the card we paid with and she would reimburse us for what was wrong, not the whole order, which was the problem. My daughter stopped by with the card later that same day and was treated very poorly by management. Therefore, here is my post for the world. A little kindness and concern for our experience shown by Cindy would have gone a long way. I will patronize a business that shows pride in their establishment. read more

I didn't expect much since I moved to OK from Cali 8 months ago and I have not had any Mexican food that was worth a good review. BUT Chavas really does the job. I know Mexican food I lived 52 miles from the boarder and had some of the best taco stands ever. I had the Carne Asada it was really good and I judge all Mexican restaurants by their rice and beans. I live in Stillwater, and have been consistently disappointed with the Mexican food here. It seems every Mexican restaurant is either totally bland, overpriced, or generally both. Then one fine day, friends and I decided to take the scenic route to Tulsa by 51. We stopped in tiny Yale, Oklahoma for lunch and discovered Chavas, which so far surpasses every Mexican restaurant in Stillwater that I've started making the 25 minute drive out there when I'm craving good Mexican food. I had the Mexican skillet, which was awesome. My friend had cheese enchiladas, and they were also delicious. If only they had horchata, my life would be complete. read more

We've driven by here several times and didn't think much of it. Tonight we decided to give it a try and boy am I glad we did! It was a little quiet there but they were running a lot of take-out orders, I think because the weather is so cold tonight. I will warn you, if you go on a chilly night, bring a coat. The dining room was chilly! But the food was hot and fresh and the guacamole was clearly made in-house. Our server, Billy was personable and friendly and very attentive. I had beef fajitas and my husband had the #5 combo plate. Everything was made to order and if you leave there hungry, you left food on the plate. Every item was priced right! Oh and the rice. I hate getting rice in restaurants because it's always dry. Not this place. It was moist and fluffy and flavorful. We will definitely be returning. I'm so glad we finally stopped in. read more

Yale doesn't have hardly any businesses left in town so there isn't any competition and still your food and service is great.

The same food as El Tapitio in Stillwater. Actually maybe a little more bland. I had the enchiladas and the steak quesadillas plus a white queso. Queso, salsa, chips all the same as Stillwater except the salsa was more watery and the chips were slightly out of date tasting. One thing you can count on in Oklahoma are its Mexican restaurants. Chavas is the local spot for our "blink and you'll miss it" town of Yale. Well, while they don't have menudo (my personal litmus test for a "real" Mexican restaurant), they do have decent tamales and "steak con rajas" (a thin rib steak with strips of grilled poblano peppers and cheese over the top -- muy delicioso!). Their red salsa is nothing to brag about, but the green salsa is great ... Habanero gives it that extra kick. You have to ask for it. The chiles rellenos are delicious. The refritos are not canned; the food is plentiful and fresh.... And most importantly, inexpensive. I've probably had almost everything on the menu at some time or other. This restaurant is a hit-n-miss. We travel through Yale to Stillwater and will sometimes stop when we do not want to battle traffic and people in Stillwater. The food was excellent until about a year ago. Now it is very bland and without seasonings. I'm not so sure we will stop again. Disappointing. read more
