Have been a customer of Chavira's when it first opened. This was before they served food or even meat. It was just a produce store. Then they started carrying various items. Still later, they sold some tamales during the holidays, which were excellent. Then they started a meat market, and later started selling prepared foods. Ok, this was sort of exciting. Cool. We had some birria tacos, carne asada, burritos, etc., the past two years. Now... yeah, no. First of all their burritos weren't that good. Los Compas, on the other side of the Hwy are better. Their birria was ok, the asada was good, but awfully expensive. Especially considering that birria and asada are both made from some of the cheapest meat on the cow. So, they're close, and I like their asada most of all. I go online to see if their prices have gone up. Last time it was somewhere between $15 and $18 for half a lb. I go online and it's over $21... for HALF a lb!! Are you freaking kidding me. So I come over to Yelp to leave this review, and I read another, one star review, which says that their online prices are higher than in store. What?!!? WHY?!?! That's just stupid!! So I look all over their website, facebook page, etc., looking for their "in store" prices. Nothing. WTH kind of business is this?!! These people are just over here trying to rip people off. We're not going back ever again. We'll stick with Los Compas or some other place to get asada. It's just sad that an originally successful business has gotten so greedy that they could care less about their customers, and make as much money as they can with no concern for the people they serve. We had to come back! We have tried the jalapeño poppers and beef fajitas from the meat counter. They were both excellent. We ordered breakfast burritos and they were very good. Everything we have gotten here has been amazing! read more

This place charges you $5 more online for a taco plate instead of going into store, first she said "I'll refund you" then said "well that's your problem because you ordered online. Went to Chavira's on Del Ray for their agua frescas at 7:00 through their drive in cause my little girl was craving some. Sign says drive through closes at 8. No one would answer the drive, we just sat there waiting. Pulled to front went inside. Lady said kitchen was closed and that included the agua frescas too. It was 7:30. Apparently they close when they want too. Won't go there again. Unpredictable business. Don't advertise a closing time if you have no intention following it. read more

Delicious as always. Chaviras is definitely one of my favorite places to get tacos. It reminds me of some bomb street tacos in Mexico. Some people make barbacoa way too greasy but Chaviras nails it every time. read more

I've been here many times throughout the years for shopping, but today I tried the menudo for takeout. The tripe was not fully cooked the way I like, so many pieces were too chewy. It took me a long time growing up to eat the tripe, so I'm picky. The soup and all the fixings were fine, especially the red chile. Just grabbed a quick lunch from this little cute market. I had the chicharron Gorditas with Spanish rice and beans it was wonderful. Gordita's were spicy just by themselves. They also came with a wonderful hot sauce. I love chicharron when they are soft. It is hard to find a place that serves them. I will definitely be back. read more

If you're in New Mexico and want a fast but full of taste lunch, try Chavira's! They have tacos, gorditas, tortas made you order. On the weekends they also sell tamales and menudo. The place is small, but makes up for it by being fast, clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. It's seems like a very fast paced family owned place. They also sell meats, fruits, and Mexican snacks....and tortillas. We bought tacos al pastor and carnita gorditas with Mexican cokes. Also we got some fruit and snacks for the road. The food here is so good, and super fresh! I loved their ceviche!! It was out of this world and super addictive. All the staff who work there are very nice and helpful. I am in love with the ceviche. You can also find fresh produce here, at good prices. They have fresh meat and tortillas. Everything including the peanuts that they sell are so good. Definitely a hidden gem here in las cruces. I wished I would have known about this place before. I definitely recommend it to all of my friends. My favorites so far are the ceviche and the Tacos de barbacoa!!! They are so delicious. Good little hole in the wall Mexican market. The menudo here is on point. Very good flavor. Also tried the breakfast burritos. They are good just not big portions. I also found fresh roasted hatch chilis in the off-season which I had a hard time finding anywhere else. All in all you will not be disappointed with this place. read more

I had come in to grab a quick bite for lunch and I had ordered the Gordita plate which was served with three gorditas and a side of rice and beans. The food was so flavorful however their sauces were a little too spicy for my liking. The rice was soft and fluffy with so much flavor and the beans were smooth and silky. The food is okay the service lacks! Honesty I don't know why people think it's great, yeah it's cheap food but so is Taco Bell. Waiting for a simple taco plate took 22 minutes and yet they gave me a wrong order. And then it took another 10 minutes just to get it right. I'm sorry but it's not worth it, the food or the wait. I told the cashier I wanted my money back I rather go somewhere else that wouldn't take this long for just one plate. Great place for deals on fresh produce in the East Mesa area. We left with 3 bags full of produce for only $8.00. Quality produce & small selection of Mexican grocery items in a well-organized, clean storefront. They are a distributor of Felix Mexican Bakery goods and AJ's tortillas. They will be accepting EBT soon. They have another location in town but this is a great option for those of us all the way on the east side. For a limited time, they'll be roasting Sandia green chiles on Saturdays & Sundays....mmmmm, my favorite! read more

A saving grace for the east mesa area. Milk, bread, tortillas, fresh veggies, cheese, meats, candy, some canned basics. They also serve cooked plates, tacos, menudo, carnitas, and more. A GOOD CARNICERIA BUT BELOW AVERAGE FOR DINING For the overall dining experience Chavira's is ranked 47th on the Mr. Sensitive list among Las Cruces Mexican food establishments. The food however is a bit better than the overall rating would indicate. Chavira's Grocery and Carniceria is a smallish grocery store out beyond Onate High School. While they do supply most of the grocery store basics, they also feature their home made corn tortillas and a fine selection of meat to be used in Mexican cooking. The back carniceria area has a little window where you can place your order. For prepared meals they have a small menu available. You are given a paper to take up to the front register and that is where you pay. The young lady at the register gives you a slip showing you paid and you return to the back area to wait for your food. They have a few high tables with large plastic bar-type stools for dining in. They are not very comfortable. The atmosphere for dining in is not great and one should primarily view this as a takeout place. The folks working there I found to be very pleasant and helpful....really willing to please. The prices for the food were a little on the expensive side: a middle sized carne asada burrito was $5.75, an al pastor torta was $6.50 and it came with nothing on the side, and a glass of agua fresca was a whopping $3.50. I could have purchased three plus cans of pop at some places for that, or a large drink with free refills for a buck and a half less. Regarding the food: the al pastor meat was diced in smaller chunks which were a little dry, not juicy at all, and limited in flavor. The torta roll had a real nice flavor but its texture was soft and it became a little mushy. It did not hold up well making it necessary to finish the torta with a fork. The lettuce in the torta was not shredded finely. The avocado was good. All-in-all, this was a mediocre torta; not bad but not real good either. The flavor of the roll was the best part. The medium sized asada burrito on the other hand was really good. The carne asada had a real nice flavor and the tortilla was top notch.....really good. This was not one of their corn homemade tortillas but a commercial variety. But, it was really good. With the meal I was given little cups of red and green salsa; both were quite high on the heat. The flavor was ok. The aqua fresca de melon was good....not much more to say. What to expect if you go: A place for casual dining only, dining that is uncomfortable, very friendly and helpful people (the ladies preparing the food speak mostly Spanish), prices that are a little high, and food that can be good or mediocre....depends on what you order. It's not all the same quality. Restaurant rating = as a place to dine TWO-AND-THREE-QUARTER STARS....meaning, below the norm. View this as primarily a takeout place. Good produce for the most part at great prices. The milk is a bit expensive, but I suppose it depends on how desperate you are. It closes rather early (@8pm) so that's a little inconvenient. I've never eaten the food but the tortillas are often fresh and still warm. read more
