Things to know: 1)There's a a fee to enter and another to rent skates. Because I was accompanying kids and didn't plan to skate, there was no entry fee. 2) There's an online schedule showing the different event times, and when applicable target ages. We brought my partners kids on a Thursday during the 5p-7:30p slot because 8-10p was 21+ (that day). The 5p slot didnt list ages, but tuns out it was mostly little kids. Additional teens and older people started showing up later, but still seemed younger age focused (with group games like hula hoop). 3) There's a decent number of arcade games for the space. If you don't have quarters, you can use the change machine. While the assortment of games was good, my gripe is that we counted 84 tickets won playing. However their ticket counting machine only accounted for 66. While the experience was okay, I think it's a nice option with a good selection of music, decent sized rink, fair pricing (cant speak for concessions) and a nostalgic feel. All the fun in one place - skating, bouncy houses, arcade, and food! We went during a weekday 1-4pm for a "School's Out" time during winter break. Cheap Skate does have certain hours so be sure to call ahead or check online. I believe there are hours for family/kids and some evening for just adults. So fun for everyone. I was able to purchase tickets online but you do need to check-in when you get there despite the check-in on the online scannable ticket. I took my kiddos for some skating fun and oh how it brought back memories! Cheap Skate has a 90s feel to it but with all the hip music of nowadays. A great workout and all around fun. The cost to skate isn't bad but like anything now-a-days you for pay for everything. In addition to the fee to get in and skate, there is a rental skate fee, locker fee, and obviously arcade, bouncy houses, and food. Speaking of food we got some icees, soda, pizza, and ice cream. Pretty pricey for what it was but for an easy access to food without leaving - exactly what you'd expect. The screens telling you what you can order either weren't working or not turned on properly when I went to order (about an hour in) so I had to ask what food items were available. My kids weren't interested in the bouncy house or the arcade although as a typical arcade there are tickets where you can exchange for prizes. We had so much fun and we were so exhausted by the end. Overall, I would highly recommend if you're looking indoor fun. read more

I heard about this place for years, so I went there on Saturday night. I was only human wearing a mask there, the beginning was slow and then suddenly it became crazy busy. People who come here to skate men, serious business, including beginners. The place was clean, and the light was perfect as well as the music. This place is a legend between people in there, 30s 40s 50s and even 60s: I cannot tell you how many people told me they skated here in their youth. They have nights with themes which is cool. They have food and things like gifts to buy inside. You can have lockers. And the parking is well lit and wide enough for people to come here safely. No shady. Deals happening around the block. It's on a main street and across the street from gas station. So lots of traffic and very safe. Next time I come back, I will try to skate, but I will make sure it's gonna be a week days when it's not too busy. read more

Cheap Skate was fun but not void of sketchiness. The music was REALLY loud and their song choices were very odd and moderately disturbing to listen to. I was anticipating them playing oldies but only a few were played. It was my first experience roller blading and it was easy to start with my ice skating experience. Because I haven't been to a roller rink before I'm anticipating my concerns are fairly normal and are the way they are because of the audience they are trying to reach. Oh, the flood of nostalgia entering this place. My friends and I used to frequent the local skate rink when I was in my teens, and I'm much older now but it was "like riding a bike" as they say! It was a joy to bring my son and let him experience the fun as well. The bounce house is in a corner not even enough room in the area. The arcade is small like any small arcade u find in a store pointless. The people that serve the food got an attitude problem. They over charge. The bathroom was disgusting when I was there did not even want to be in there. Ur better off spending ur money else where. This place is still a great place. I use to go here all the time when I was a kid. They have a jump house area, skating, and arcade games. Fun place to host a kids birthday party. Went for a fun family outing, ended up highly disappointed. If your babies can't skate do not bring them to this location. We bought the trainers, but my 5 year old niece was having a hard time still. She was in the middle or the floor, so my spouse who is an experienced skater picked her up to get her off the floor so she would not hurt herself. So one on the mic proceeded to yell over and over to put her down. my spouse was trying to get her out the rink. Afterwards we did not want to stay. so I went to the dj both, and calmly explained we are leaving, because they made us feel uncomfortable. Apparently the security guard was the one yelling on the mic, and proceeded to yelling saying do we want to hurt our child, and we tried to explain we were not going to hurt her, what would have hurt her was putting her down in a dark room full of fast skating kids. He proceeds to yell at us as we are trying to leave anyways. After he pushed me because he was angry, I muffed him in the face. This place is embarrassing ass excuse for a skating rink. And how do y'all have security that's supposed to de-escalate a problem egg a problem on. read more

My first time at this location. Went for a birthday day on a Saturday. Many issues... A standard birthday party here ran for about $200 for 10 kids. You are supposed to get 90 minutes in the general seating area (our party was booked 230-4), a large pizza, 2 pitchers of pop, discount coupon for next visit (which expires 30 days after the party), plates, cups and napkins. A large pizza and 2 pitchers of pops aren't enough for 10 kids. So adding 3 addition pizzas, and 2 more pitchers of pop quickly ran the bill well over $300. $300 for 90 minutes is a lot. Staff were rude.. Management and party host. The party host knew before the party started that addition pizzas and pops would be needed. The pizza didn't come until the party slot was over and then she rushed us to give up the additional reserved space. After paying for extra party plates & cups (because they don't want you to bring your own) she asked if she could have the extras back?! That is super unprofessional to ask for something back that someone paid EXTRA for and not offer to refund what we didn't use. Plus after people have touch over the plates made me wonder if we were using recycled plates?? Unsanitary. We didn't give the plates back because we still had cake to give out. It's almost as if she expected us to eat the cake off the tables or something. I've seen many roller rinks that have a step down to get to the actual rink floor to skate on. Most of them have some indictor to "watch your step" or to warn you that the floor has a step down. It even glows in the dark for when they have lights out. They do not. My 79 old grandma who came in support of the birthday boy couldn't see were the floors changed and fell into the rink. It was handled so poorly between the staff and management. We have since had to get legal help with the situation because the manager has been so nasty and rude with us. They do not have liability insurance.. or so the manager says so if you happen to get injured here and you didn't sign the "waiver" (because you are just there for a party) call the police and get a police report on site. Seek medical attention right then and there. They wanted to fill out an incident form for their records but we were told that it's illegal for them to give us a copy of that form per the manager and employee filling it out... which is shady and weird (we took a picture copy of it though). The manager was also the DJ and instead of him having the employee cover the DJ booth so he could speak with us, he avoid any interaction with us at all. Super joke. As the DJ he watched over the floor as he made sure people were staying in the right zones and not using phones but joked and claimed not to see my grandma fall and basically didn't believe it happen. Even the employee said to my grandma as he handed her ice that her hand looked swollen. This place is a mess. read more

I am well into my 40s and was out late dancing my heart out last night so I really (!) was not very excited to get up and go to Cheap Skate with a bunch of noisy, rowdy kids this morning for my nephew's birthday party. But, oh my goodness, how much fun was that?!?! They have a confetti canon, people!!! On the way out I told my teenaged son, "That was so fun!! I totally want to celebrate my 50th birthday here!" If you grew up in the area in the 1970s and 80s it will bring back a lot of memories. It was open but nearly empty except for our group at 10am on a Saturday. It was picking up with lots of families by the end of the party. Their staff was dynamite! I didn't catch the gentleman's name but Gretchen ran our party and did a wonderful job (he was helpful and friendly, too!). CONFETTI CANON for the wiiiin!!!! I was pleasantly surprised by how good the pizza was. Not like schnancy, high-end pizza but well above a Tombstone with a nice crunch to the crust, and very cheesy. I am so happy that I live close to this roller skating rink. Not very many roller rinks around anymore, and this one is a great place to go to. I am a senior citizen that is a beginner skater, and I love coming here on Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings, and for adult lessons on Monday nights. Each of those times are for adults only and they have music I like. The community of skaters that come here are so helpful in helping me learn to skate, and very friendly. On Wednesday night in particularly, there is a real sense of community with people that are very welcoming to newcomers. I would call the Wednesday 7:30 PM crowd an older and experienced skating group, as a whole, but they love to help. People that work here are kind of a sorted group with some accommodating and some rude, but the people in charge seem to be concerned about their customers. The building just got new carpet, the decor looks nice; not run down, and the tables and bathrooms are clean. They do what they can to stay in business, which means catering to the kids, but they have adults only times also. I would not advise skating when it is open skating if you are an adult skater, because there are a lot of kids that are falling all over. But the kids are having the time of their life so if you have kids or grandkids, bring them in. There is always a DJ on duty that enforces the rules over the microphone, so kids can't skate around with food or break any other rules. I would highly recommend this rink to anyone. read more

Unlike reviewers who tease about "inside information" in a moment of self importance, I'll review what Cheap Skate is. It's a basic roller skating rink with reasonable prices and easy-going owners...compared to other rinks in the twin cities. You won't find 'jam skaters' here, but you will see some talented skaters on adult nights in a varied crowd. The floor is painted concrete, smaller than the Roller Garden but bigger than Saints North. They try to cater to everyone, so the music coming out of the above average sound system is quite varied and they take requests. They have a dazzeling light show, complete with a blast of dry ice once in a while. There are contests often, and the 'dice game'. Food is what you expect. Good assortment of video games. Weekends will be a mob with little kids and birthday parties. Rental skates are in very average condition. read more

This place could be so much better! We went with my daughter and a group of her friends to celebrate her birthday. It was only open for a 3-hour time block and we easily spent 2 of those hours waiting in lines. It took 30 mins to get in the front door with pre-purchased tickets. Another 20 minutes with the kids waiting in line to get rental skates. We couldn't even get a table for our group, we had to ball up our belongings into a corner and stand guard. Then, it was over 40 minutes in line to get drinks and another hour to get food for the kids. An hour before closing, they ran out of pizza. We had to wait an hour to get 6 hot dogs and 2 nachos - we were served 2 minutes before they closed and then rushed out the door. There were about 6 kids working behind the counter, but I only saw 1 helping people and handing out orders - not sure what the others were doing. There were too many people, we were constantly running into other people any time we walked away from our stuff. There are just so many things that could make this a great experience. The good thing is that the kids had fun skating and playing in the bounce houses, but it was definitely a stressful day for the grown ups. read more

The staff here is exceptional. Everyone of the staff members I have interacted with across multiple visits has been courteous, professional and has a passion for skating. Clean fun entertainment that won't bust your bankroll. Plenty of space for first timers to spectate if your thinking about getting into skating. You can rent for the night or the staff is very knowledgeable about skates and what will be the best fit for your own needs and level. They take the time to ask you some questions, gauague your ability and it's all taken care of in house. My new skates fit perfect. Issue with your wheel or needs and adjustment? These guys take care of you. Put the phones and iPads away for the night. It's relaxing, good exercise and just have fun! Oh and yes there is food and beverages so when you break a sweat there is plenty to drink. Make this a regular stop, fantastic exercise. You will be back! read more
