Boutique record store located in the heart of Montreal. They have all kinds of genres. Ended up buying some nice LPs from Whitney Houston and Lionel Ritchie. Definitely a place to stop if you're into records.

I recently checked out Cheap Thrills during my first visit to Montreal. It was the last shop I stopped at before heading back to the U.S. I must start my review first talking about the god awful parking. This is a very busy area and parking was seriously the worst. I'm not sure if it was because of the workday or what, but it was an inconvenience. The shop itself is located upstairs in a building that houses other businesses. After walking up the carpeted stairs I noticed the shop on the left. Inside I really liked the overall setup and look. Small, but lots of records. The ratio of new vinyl really trumped the used selection by a lot! There was a great variety though of new records, but that's not really what I was searching for. There was one record not on the floor that I requested from the discogs page. The guy behind the counter kindly grabbed it for me. I picked through most of the used records, and only seemed to find one other one that caught my eye. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with the overall used selection, especially hip hop. Yes they technically had a section, but it was mostly 12"'s and abysmal. They also had cassettes, CDs, and books. I'm glad I checked out the shop for its history, but not a really deep used vinyl selection worth the headache to park.

Welcome to cheap thrills, the store that try's to kill you before entering it! After you do a spin o Rama move around the homeless man outside asking for spare change make a quick sprint up the slippery unsalted front stairs for and leap for that door handle. Now time for the tricky part of going up the purple stairs, make sure your grappling hook is sharp and ready, make three giant swings and release it. The grappling hook should grab on to the carpet first or second time, then while holding a firm grip on your rope pull yourself up the stairs. Once you've reached the summit aka the store you will be greeted by a man with greasy hair and glasses, be careful of this one as anything you say your looking for will be answered with another question within a question followed by a condescending answer. The spin o rama move here won't work at the upstairs has very confined spaces, my advice is to hang an hard left for the jazz section and wait for him to get distractedly someone looking to sell old DVD box sets of "the hills". You'll find the prices on majority of the vinyl are somewhat fair and will have a wide variety to select from, lots of rare records and mass produced arcade fire to choose from. Aside from the troll behind the desk and the busted building it's a fun place to visit, lots of metal and punk records too which is hard to find in normal Montreal record stores.

Going up the very crooked staircase into a great used record and book store

Go here. Fun vinyl collection, knowledgeable staff. Good stuff--I was a tourist visitor and wish I had a shop like this in my town.

Even when I said I wasn't necessarily looking to make money, just donate to a place I like, they told me that taking my books would "burden" them... Even though that's what this place is for, selling and buying used books! I went to a bookstore further up Mont-Royal who took them. I certainly understand that they couldn't take all of them depending on the value, but it was really their dismissive and quite rude attitude that took me off guard. Not sure I'll shop there again, unfortunately.

My review is really based on vinyl records as that's what lured me in. The shop is very clean and neatly organized. They had some nice new arrivals plus several bins of rock, jazz, classical, and whatever else in between. I found one record I wanted, but a few others I already had that I otherwise would have grabbed. Prices were pretty fair. They also carried CDs, but no cassettes. Of course they have lots of books and nice area to sit and relax. Cool spot worth checking out for a little browsing.

There's something that feels so grounding and wondrous about unfolding a brand new map and spreading it out across a table, a floor, a bed or whatever spot is big enough, so that you can see all of your options in huge format at once. Staring at a tiny smartphone screen just does NOT compare. It's like being able to see your feet on the new terrain before you get there. And, remember: fold-out maps don't run out of battery. The last time I decided to drive across the continent from east coast to west coast, I had a hella time trying to find a paper map anywhere! Gas stations might carry maps of the local town or city, but good luck tracking down a full continental map anywhere. You could order a world map or full map online, but those aren't road maps for tossing into your car's glove box and hitting the road with - those are fancy wall maps. This place, however, has a fold-out map of every country, neatly stacked in boxes on the floor like old vinyl records, and shelves and shelves of guide books to go along with them, if you want a guide book too. My future plans include another epic road trip throughout the continental US and Canada, and now that I've got the glorious fold-out map, I can start planning my routes with highlighter in hand. Feeling adventurous? Check this place out for inspiration.

I'm always impressed by the variety. You see something new every time you go in because they offer such an impressive collection of items. We even got hockey cards for surprise gifts for family this time around! Some items are more expensive but we got an edition of The Wizard of Oz that was still wrapped and originally worth quite the pretty penny that we will be gifting to a loved one. It was an amazing experience once again today. For the first time, I think I spent more time looking at their prints and I wanted to buy nearly every Singin' In The Rain one... Hardy Boys galore... it was overall just a lot of fun to visit this store. We'll be back for our quarterly visit in no time.

They have lots of records for 5 bucks, which is something like an old movie rental price. Even if I only listen to something once, the experience is worth 5 bucks. They also have way more expensive records, like limited editions of Tom Waits or whatever, which occasionally run closer to a hundred. So there's a huge range, if you're looking to spending a tiny bit of pocket money, or if you're looking to make a major investment for your collection. They also have books. I honestly use the library for books more than buying them, but sometime when I'm in here for vinyls, something on the bookshelf catches my eye, and the prices are fair. It is packed, though. Sometimes where there are a lot of customers, it is very hard to move around and look for things. So much stuff in a such a small space is a double-edged sword. This 5-star review is for my visits outside of peak times, for the selection, service, and price. During peak times, maybe only worth 4 stars because it's so hard to navigate. But the popularity is a sign of the quality, so it's hard to quibble with that.

I simply asked a staff member if I could get back the copy I left for them to look at for consignation and as the clerk went on to get my book from the bookstore's manager office, Andres (bookstore manager) just dropped it as if it were garbage to his employee who then gave it back to me. I could see it from the clerk's desk as he began walking up the stairs to the office and caught my book from above. He gave the book back to me and I left without saying a word. I felt very enraged at this but thank god the book was still in a very good condition as the staff member caught it. (I can't imagine how madder I would have got if he had dropped it on the floor). It just tells you how much disrespect Andres has for not even coming down from his office and give the book back in person. Having worked very hard on this piece for over a year I thought they would have paid a little more respect to the product itself than just treat it as as a piece of shit.
