The cab driver ripped me off. Was staying at MGM in Detroit. Valet called me a cab. Was told 5 minutes, 15 minutes later I called myself. Got in the car and went about a mile. When I was getting out, I noticed the meter never started. Cabbie said to pay what is fair. I asked him the normal fare, he said $25. That seemed really high, but I was heading to a show and didn't have time to argue. Tipped him $5 and left. Minutes later I got a text thanking me and my fare was $9.25. Well I call a cab from checker cab company. I was at the Harper hospital and called for a cab and got cab 2196 Mr.Lynn. My fair came to twenty dollars but I tipped him 15.00 dollars extra. I left some important hospital papers (life or death information) So I called the cab dispatch and the dispatcher got in touch with him and I offered him another 5.00 because of the importance of the papers with were concerning my health issues. When we spoke he said he attempted extort more money from me. Saying he needed more than five dollars from me. Those papers are concerning my my dire health situation and he's choosing extortion in order for me get my important documents back. I'm thinking I should go to my attorney to press charges for the criminal actions that their drivers imposed on me. I'm finding that it's true that they are the worse cab company in Detroit and it's pretty obvious to me that they should no longer exist as a cab service in Detroit and I'll do all I can to make sure that everyone knows what poor service they are giving. Service has very much gone down, DOWN! Slow show and no extra, or going the extra in regards to customer service. They can't wait but to drive off fast - nearly before you can get out of the cab! How can this be with Lyft and Uber providing faster (if not perfect) service?! Banned from driving because of a recent surgery, I depended on Yellow Cab for everything: getting me to the doctor, CVS, a lunch date, and grocery shopping. I love it that they are clean, fast, and the drivers are all friendly but not overly talky. The thing that really did it for me was when, on the way home from a checkup, I realized I needed to pick up a few things. The driver pulled over at Kroger and, after asking what I needed, hopped out and ran into the store to get it for me (he was quite spry for such an old guy). Even nicer than that, when we got to my house I saw he'd written the price that was on the meter when we arrived at Kroger and the price when we left and he subtracted his shopping time from the total saying he didn't want to charge me for leaving the meter running while he was in the store (doing my grocery shopping!). And then, wait for it, there's more..... He carried my groceries up to the door and made sure that someone was there to carry them inside and put them away before he left. I was at the Tigers game we walked over to 2nd, and were probably 1/2 mile or so from where we wanted to go and figured we'd cab it the rest of the way. The guy picked us up and I didn't see him turn on the meter and he never got off his phone to even talk to us. We arrive and he says "20 dollars". Are you kidding me? Its reason like this that make nobody want to come to Detroit. Later that evening we were at MGM and had to go to Compuware which is less than a mile away. I had such an outstanding experience with Checker cab. I used them for a brief period of time when my car was in the shop. Now, I live very near the Checker Cab location, and all of my work needs only take me within a 5 mile radius or so. So had that in my favor. I only had to call for a cab a couple times, and it was there in a timely fashion. Most often, though, since I work/play around the greater downtown area, I was able to just hail a cab that was hanging around somewhere - campus martius, city hall, greektown, the WSU area, etc. and was scooped up right away. (Not to mention, "hailing" a cab for the first time here right here on the streets of the city made me feel very Carrie Bradshaw at the time. Ha.) The real stand out for Checker, though, was when my car had initially broken down. It was evening, getting dark, and cold out. I wasn't in the worst part of town, but it wasn't the best. When I called this cab to take me to a gas station (I had had problems w the gas gauge before, so I thought maybe it was just out of fuel), I was blessed with having the nicest cab driver ever sent to me. He was a middle aged gentlemen, and he spent, no joke, probably about a full 90 minutes with me, running me to the gas station and back twice (and insisting on filling the gas can for me so I wouldn't get gas on my hands), and even using his own cables to try and give me a jump, to see if that would solve the problem. When all that failed, I had to leave my car there and have him just drive me home for the night. He was just so kind, and took so much time to go out of his way...I was sure to tip him very generously, and sent a card to Checker Cab the next day pointing out his kindness. I'm sure a lot of this was just due to me getting the right driver, as another one from the same company would not have done all that. But if I need a cab in the future I'll always use Checker, as they have treated me well! read more

This company has the worst customer service. Ladies answer the phone very unpleasant and they will not give you an ETA. I asked why and one lady just sent me over to another lady. They all just say if it's not there in 20 minutes, you can call back. Then, they'll put a new request in (which will be a new 20 minutes)... I got so irritated with this that I asked to speak to a supervisor. I just find dealing with bad attitudes unacceptable when I am patronizing an establishment, cab company included. The supervisor assisted me with my concerns and assured me that he'd have a conversation with his staff. I personally feel Detroit and Michigan in general needs more cabs. Any time you need a cab the wait is extremely long or the cab just doesn't show up. I was very happy with the cab service provided by Yellow Cab. I called a cab at around mid night to the Amtrak station on West Baltimore, Detroit and these guys were quick to respond. I had a cab come pick me up in about 15 mins for a ride to the Westin Book Cadillac downtown. The cabbie was professional and the cab was clean. Definitely give these guys a call ! read more

If you need a taxi in Detroit, then this would be the company to call. But, sometimes, they are rather unreliable. One major problem I have with them is that if you do not have an exact street address, they are unable to send you a taxi. So, for instance, if you were at a business at a major intersection, they will ask you for the address of the business rather than the name of it and the cross streets. This is particularly frustrating when you are in front of the business and its address number isn't prominently displayed. I used to work with a lady who used to dispatch for them. Since they are now satellite dispatched, if the computers are down, you will not be able to get a taxi from them. Instead, when you call, they will tell you a taxi is on its way, and it will never show. I'm starting to believe they pick and choose their fares as well, which I believe is against city ordinance. However, this is usually the best taxi company to call if you need a taxi in Detroit. read more

Visited Detroit with a couple friends for a weekend. We took 4 cab rides all together, all 4 of them going to/from the exact same places. We paid a different fare each time, and only ONE of the drivers was willing to turn on their meter (this one cost us the least, at $4.10). One driver spent the ride talking with his friend via bluetooth, swearing non-stop the entire time. On our 4th cab ride, the driver tried to charge us $15 upon arrival at our hotel - for a ride that we KNEW was worth less than $5, after having already done it 3 times. When we pointed out that he was trying to scam us, he kept arguing with statements such as "I was waiting a long time to get a customer" ...we don't pay you for the time you sit around waiting for someone to call/flag you. We generously gave him $8 and got out. My advice: Tell them to turn on the meter BEFORE you tell them your destination. Make sure they do it. If they absolutely refuse, then negotiate a price before your cab ride starts. Many are out to scam you, and almost none will turn on the meter or accept credit card (so that they do not have to give any of their earnings to Checker). read more

I was scammed by this company on Tuesday night (Feb.12). The driver charged me $15 for a trip from Greektown to Little Caesars Arena. About twice as much as the legal price. On the way back another driver said that the return trip would be $30. I asked why the price was so high, he said that "All the cabs charge the same fee". We got out and walked. My husband used this service as it was recommended by the hotel, the only number they offered. After an hour he finally called me and said he needed my help. They kept saying something about credit card - I finally called to find out they hadn't even issued a cab to him yet because not all their cars accept credit card - I asked the woman why didn't you explain that to my husband and suggest they could get one to him faster if he were to allow a detour to an ATM. "Not our policy". I told her to issue a cab immediately and I would let my husband know he would need to stop at an atm machine enroute. I told her he has already been waiting at this point way over an hour - I was told it would be 45 minutes - they had snow that day - I was shocked he had already been waiting all that time. I called my husband and said I would call the front desk of the hotel - I told them the issue we were having and was shocked that was the only cab service they even had a phone number for. 5 More calls went out to dispatch - 4 from myself one from the front desk of the hotel ... Worst experience. Customer service was so bad I cancelled the ride. You cannot book ahead or pay by card unless you have a business account with them. The woman who answered the phone didn't ask for my address and just sat there saying nothing. I thought she was doing something and waited for her prompt. After a long (like minutes) silence, she said "well are you gonna tell me where you at?" I told her the address and she started arguing if I was staying in a home or apartment (I was traveling so I'm not sure). After telling her I was visiting she hung up on me without confirming. I booked with a different company and then there was a cab honking non stop in front of the door. I called and cancelled the cab. Ridiculous. read more

I called the number I told the lady my location and she said thed call when there here it was like 11:00 , I waited 40 minutes so I thought something was off I called back the lady said after 20 minutes if noone pickes up the location they automatically cancel it. Yellow Cab was the 2nd cab company I called for a pick up at my house to go downtown on a Saturday night. The other cab company (as mentioned in my other review) wouldn't give me an ETA, and it had already been 30 minutes. I asked the dispatcher at Yellow Cab for an ETA, and I was told 15 minutes. 13 minutes later, a cab was in front of my house! YAY! It was a minivan too, so it was cozy for all 4 of us in the back. It was clean too! The cab driver took us downtown, and I asked if we could call him when we were ready to head home. He wasn't working at that time, but gave us his brother's number, who also works for the company. So nice! We didn't need to call him though. We were at Old Shillelagh's at 2am, and there were plenty of Yellow Cabs riding around, waiting to pick up people. We hopped in a minivan, and we were on our way. I really liked seeing so many cabs in the area. This is one of many things Detroit needs. Good, reliable cabs to get people to their destinations safely. Both drivers were very courteous, clean cabs, and safe drivers. After my initial experience with the other cab company, they were like a knight in shining armor coming to our rescue. Also claimed to take CC's but then gave this sob story at the end of the cab ride about how it wasn't fair for him to have to pay credit card fees when we just got the "minimum" amount (coincidentally the minimum is $25). I've lived in Detroit most of my life and was born here. I'm going to be very candid with this review. The less Black you are the greater your cab experience is going to be. I work at a casino and I go to school at Wayne State University and I live right off of Grand River further down on the west side but within the same proximity to my job and school. Cab drivers in the D see the influx of whites and others as a bankroll and will immediately cater to those they think they can get the most fares out of. I'll have called an hour and 30 minutes before I need to be at work right down the street and will still end up being 20 minutes late for work simply because no one wanted to respond to the call out for pick up in that neighborhood. They will drive around all day and ignore people flagging them down based on how they look but will sit in front of the casinos all day and night and wait for what they hope is an airport run. I've caught myself on more occasions than I care to try and count walking out of my job with my uniform and badge still on and having to argue with a cab driver because not only did he ask me where I was going as I'm walking towards the car, but he would create a lie just so he wouldn't have to take me. I wont apply this to all cab drivers because there are a handful that I keep in my pocket and I take care of them very well, but for the average cab driver in the city of Detroit for all of the companies they are pretty shitty. Especially if you are black customer. Rely on über and lyft instead. read more

I have lived in Detroit all my life. I have always used checker cabs for various trips and such. During the electronic music festival downtown this year I was appalled at the price jack up they tried to present me with. I live in Midtown and go to downtown quite often and I know how much a cab is from downtown to my house. Because visitors were in town for the electronic music festival they thought they could tricke me and charge me $30 for a cab ride that cost $7. I will never use Checker Cab again ever ever ever. Now I only use uber cabs. Take extreme caution when using their service. I recently traveled to Miami and they have different zones and there is a set price so they can't overcharge tourists. This company is extremely unprofessional. I work with a TV production company, and a Producer from LA requested a cab. I called Checker Cab for his taxi service, and was told it would be there in 20 min tops. No one ever showed up, after he waited an hour, no one ever called (and I gave them his number as well) and gave any sort of warning. To add insult to injury, when I called the next day to complain, the excuse I was given was "I'm not going to sugar coat it, but the 1st and the 3rd are our busiest days of the month, so sometimes drivers don't show up". IS THAT REALLY HOW PEOPLE RUN BUSINESSES??? Completely unreliable. Called an hour before I had to be at the train station, waited outside my house for a half an hour and no cab. Called again and they had to re-assign one to me because the cab driver said he came by and no one was there. Keep in mind I was on my front porch the entire time so not a chance a driver came to the right address.
