The absolute worst. I recommend Uber to all that have access. I requested a cab last summer, not only did I have to call and follow up several times, the cab never came. The dispatcher was rude; the management is worse. People who are pleasant should be the only people answering phones. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE ONLY WAY TO SURVIVE. The City of Detroit needs to end that contract and use a service that contributes to the betterment of our city. If this cab service ends up going out of business I can't say that I would mind or that they didn't deserve to be. Uber has never given me any issues. read more

I never take the time out to review a company if I am satisfied generally with their service. I called Checker cab today and the woman that answered the phone had an attitude from the start. She gave me a hard time getting a fare for a client of the company I work for. First I gave her the address and apparently that isnt enough information to get the cab here?!? I have never heard of such a thing, I also described that we are located in a high rise, what intersection we were at and what type of building.. she still wasn't satisfied. VERY RUDE!!!! Hung up on her to keep from cussing her out... I would give their service NO STARS if possible........ AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! read more

No-show cabs and terrible customer service. I want to give it zero stars. I requested a cab 40 minutes before the train was supposed to arrive at the station. After waiting for 20 minutes outside in 37 degree weather, I called again to check on the status of my cab. The grumpy lady stated that they were very busy, but since they had cabs available (??? if cabs were available why didn't it arrive in the first place?) she would send another cab. After another 10 minutes of waiting, I called again because I was going to miss my train. I asked for estimated time of arrival, where the cab was, and my number in the queue, but I was curtly told that they did not have that information, but I could leave a message on the supervisors answering machine. I ended up waiting 35 minutes in the cold weather, the cab never showed up, and I missed the train. I will see if they reimburse me for the more expensive train ticket. Either way, I would not recommend this company. read more

I wanted to give it 0 stars. I have never been so appalled by a costumer service company before! I was running late for work when I was informed that I wouldn't be able to get a ride from the friend that usually takes me. It was already a rough morning and so I decided the only solution was to panic (it was a extremely rough morning for me) After I calmed down and reasoned with myself that it wasn't the end of the world, I started searching for cab/taxi services in my area, I live maybe a 5 minute drive from Detroit and I was going to work IN Detroit. I would never expected it to be such a big deal. So, I called the first company that came up, Checkered Cab, thinking "okay it's really not the end of the world". I called the number listed and was greeted so rudely I couldn't believe it. The attitude of the woman who answered was that of a sixteen-year old girl being interrupted in the middle something more important than her job. I very calmly and politely asked for a cab. The woman rudely asked for my address as if I was a child, so I told her. When she asked for the area I was in I answered "Lincoln Park", to which she replied, attitude and all, " We don't service Lincoln Park!" And hung up on me! I have never had that happen to me. I was a little stumped by this. I work in Midtown Detroit, but if I ever need a ride home or even down the block, I most certainly will NOT be calling Checker Cab. I wish I had read some of these reviews before I called, I wouldn't have even bothered and moved on to the next company! read more

So unprofessional. I called to order a cab for a patient (I work in a hospital) and the woman answered the phone by mumbling "checker". I didn't even understand her so I asked her to repeat herself. She very rudely repeated CHECK-ER. Seriously? That's how you answer the phone at work? Unbelievable. After i gave her all the information, the last think she said was "look out". What?? These guys are so gangster it's unbelievable even for Detroit. Now I'm very aware the taxi game in this town is nowhere near on par with our other big city homies but for f*#ks sake. Everyone at checker is beyond rude, sketchy, hostile and thinks I'm a tourist. One time I called from my favorite barstool only to wait 45 minutes on a weeknight and when the cab finally pulls up, the freaking guy walks in and starts drinking!?! I asked if he knew anything about my cab and he said in the best surly voice he could muster: " yeah it's outside " and took a long pull off his double wild turkey. Now surly is practically my middle name and I can appreciate a good step off, but that was straight un called for. Also it's pretty much a $5 ride from anywhere in town I'd be without my whip to the crib and I've been slapped with anywhere from 10-30 buck 'flat fare' upon entering the cab. If you must ride checker tell them to turn the f-ing meter on and take names. Or if you really know what's good for ya, skip it. read more

I really wish after all this time Yelp would allow negative or 0 stars if there was a way to have a amoeba run a cab company it would operate better than this .they wonder why uber is taking 80% of all the business now and you would think that they would step up their game and offer better service to increase sales but they just don't care. all the years of being the biggest game in town haveade them complacent. had to call them four different times over the span of an hour and a half after being put on hold twice and listening to a completely automated system saying we appreciate your business please stay on the line will be with you shortly. this is about as bad as being put on hold calling detroit 911 .......I mean seriously I know the cab company in detroit is not getting this much business to not be able to answer calls. the lady was downright rude with elementary level rudeness and verbiage almost being aggravated that she had to answer the phone . how anyone in this day in age could think that this is in any shape or form appropriate or a justified way to run a business and expect return customers is absolutely ridiculous ..when rudely spoken to where are you at and what do you want when asked an ETA individual said if you don't see nothing in 15 minutes just keep calling back how the hell is this a way to run a business...... when we didn't see anything we call back 30 minutes later we were told it is orderd and if you don't see nothin call us back. We were leaving a local business and the address was a business address this is why uber is decimating this line of work.. we had a car at our location in 9 minutes with a picture of our driver the type of vehicle he was driving and even called to let us know he was here our ride all the way back to Clinton Township was only $27 from downtown Detroit way th go uber.. how can you beat that .when there are only two positive reviews on this company out of this entire site some of them alluding to robbery and embezzlement by not turning on the fair I don't know why we bother to write these reviews it's not like the company is going to even read them or care when we called back to cancel the cab and be respectful they didn't care and hung up the phone at this rate just let them go extinct like the dinosaurs they are as to the other only two positive reviews on here I hope you got that driver's number and AM extremely elated you were the exception to the rule unfortunately I wish a landmark t Detroit company like this wasn't turning out this way here's to hoping read more

It's been three hours since I called for a cab. I've called three more times for updates on where the cab is and was told 15 more minutes. I'm not in some deserted neighborhood in Detroit. If there's a cab service in hell, checker is the provider. These fools have consistantly let me down. They have made me late for work, miss last calls with pretty women, not run the meter and tried to "custy" me out by chargin $30 for a $10 ride, no shown at least fifteen times, left me frozen in the streets and have refused to take me to my destination several times. Call greater detroit cab company and build a reputation with a driver, if you like the service, get his card and call direct. Whatever you do, do not hail an independant cab driver in the city from the street. Lameese is the worst. For some reason there has been an upsurge in taxis with numbers that are out of area printed on the side of the car. These guys are pretty much licensed jitneys who will rip you off by taking the LONG way around, not run the meter and pretend like they have no idea what you are talking about. I usually love it when people under estimate me, but cabs are an exception. Its just a pain in the ass. Call the police from the cab if you think you are being taken for a ride, take down the cab id#, have the driver stop at your destination and pay him a fair fare. Do not be intimitaded by these fools. They can loose their licenses for breaking the law. Do not let them flat rate you. They will never estimate in your favor. read more

We have been waiting 2 hours now for a cab. The first 4 times I called I was told 20 minutes (each time we waited more than 20 minutes before calling back), then I called again, the dispatcher hung up on me, I called back, they said the driver would be here any minute. Another 20 minutes pass so we call back and are are now on the phone with the supervisor trying to sort out the issue but the supervisor's response has been, "Don't yell at me, it's not my fault." The supervisor then told me that I was lying when we stated we had called multiple times. If a cab is not coming or there no driver available it is the company's responsibility to let the customer know this information. She refused to call the cab driver and let me know an eta, and hung up on me twice. I have never been so livid, am a frequent cab user in chicago, and can not believe the unprofessionalism of checker cab. Never ever use this cab company. read more

I would like to share my experience with a Checker cab this morning. While driving my children to daycare this morning at approx. 6:15am one of you drivers, van # 2138, turned on his blinker and proceeded to come into my lane where the front of my vehicle was still occupying. I sounded my horn to let him know I was there and he continued into my lane after finally looking up and seeing me there. When we arrived at the turn from Middle belt Rd heading onto Schoolcraft your driver proceeded to lock up his brakes to attempt to make me rear end him. Luckily I was driving with plenty of stopping distance to only have to slightly slow down to avoid him. While proceeding on to I-96 heading east he proceeded to lock up his brakes again for no apparent reason to try and scare me again. I proceeded on to the highway behind your driver as he was still driving erratically. I moved over to the second lane in an attempt to get away from him as he then attempted to move over in front of me narrowly missing (within a foot) side swiping the vehicle in front of me. He then continued to try and play games and run me off the road form the remainder of our trip on the highway until we exited at Telegraph road. At that point I think he may have realized I had taken a picture of his vehicle and him holding a position as a driver for hire he was wrong. This person put my life and my children's lives in danger this morning because of a simple sound of the horn to let him know the space he was moving toward was occupied. If that simple of a gesture sets him off into a major road rage fit he should in no way be driving for any company. read more

The call is not easy to be connected. and when it was connected, the lady desn't want to listen to you carefully before she hang up. really bad. I hope to give them 0 or minus rating. read more

We have been in Detroit for the last 3 days and have had awesome service from Checker Cabs. On our first day here one of the taxi drivers gave us his number and told us to call him whenever we wanted a ride somewhere. Not only was he there when we asked to be picked up, he was there usually 20-30 minutes early!! He even met us in the lobby of our hotel and greeted us every morning. His cab number was 2393 and I would suggest him as a cab driver for anyone visiting Detroit. He offered us amazing service with great prices! :) read more

I only gave this company a star, because i had to in order to write my review. This was my first time ever using this company, the telephone operator was very rude and very unprofessional, how she ever landed that position with her noncustomer service skills says alot about human resources. My driver was very pleasant he did get me to my destination in a very timely manner. I later called back to request their services again a few hours later because I was now getting off from work, and once again this rude unprofessional operator picked up the phone while still holding a conversation in the background with out greeting my call finally acknowledges my call, when I gave her my location she tells me they do not pick up in that area, and I informed her that this was my destination from earlier and why was that, she states to me in a very nasty tone, that they can drop me off in Chicago if I needed to be, but they don't service livonia. I'm sorry to say indivduals like her need classes on how to communicate with the public because I really did not need her smart grade school remarks, with that being said I will never use this company or recommend their services because of the poor judgement they have made hiring her. read more

Dangerous and a waste of time. Would give negative stars if possible. Knowing I would be arriving at train station close to dark, I called early afternoon to get instructions on how to have a cab there as close to arrival as possible. Downtown Detroit is not a place I want to hang out in after dark. I was told to call 30 minutes before my train arrived. I did so, and was asked if I was at the station. Since I wasn't, they would not send a cab. So I called again on arrival (9:15) and was told cab would be there in 15 min; call if not there in 18. One hour and 15 minutes and several phone calls later, I was still waiting - the only passenger left in the waiting room. Dispatch was uninformed, unconcerned, and I don't think they were even in the Detroit area. Another passenger familiar with the area had told me that most of the cabs would be at the casino, and likely would not answer a call to go downtown. Guess she was right. I finally approached someone I thought was an Amtrak attendant, and he turned out to be a cab driver for another company, and he was able to take me across to Windsor. I don't remember the name of his company, but the driver's name was Sunny. Ask for him at the Amtrak station. Don't waste time on Checker. read more
