I usually run away screaming whenever anyone suggests a makeup application - even if it's free. Why, you ask, would a beauty junky such as myself turn down a chance at some pampering? Well, if you've ever found yourself the blank canvas of some overzealous makeup artist who is convinced that everyone looks good with a smokey eye, you get where I'm coming from. That's the attitude I had when I was told that I'd be made up for a photo shoot I was a part of. Yikes! Luckily I had nothing to fear, because my makeup artist was Emily Aznavourian from Cheekadee, and she turned out to be a hell of a pro as well as a seriously cool lady. After she worked her magic on me, I looked pretty, well, pretty! Emily is the master of the natural, slightly glam look that made me look like me, only better. She also does a brisk business with bridal parties, too, so if you want a more polished, dressed up look, she's your girl. Aja from Cheekadee did my makeup (and my Mom's and a few of my bridesmaids) for my wedding this past weekend. She was fantastic! Great to work with, and everyone's makeup looked great. Aja came to the house and set up in the kitchen which was perfect - we could all keep getting ready, chatting, and eating while she did her work. I was a little nervous about the amount of eyeliner going on when she was doing the first girl's makeup... but it turned out fantastically. Everyone's eyes really popped. And the fake eyelashes she did for a few of the girls and my Mom ($15 extra btw) looked totally real. You would never notice they had falsies on, and I couldn't stop thinking how amazing their eyes looked. Even my Dad didn't notice my Mom had anything different with her eyelashes (and they've been married almost 30 years)! My makeup stayed on all night too - and even the next day my eyes still looked really good. Nothing like waking up hungover and tired but still looking decent. I also did a trial a few weeks before hand with Aja at Cheekadee studio in Chestnut Hill. Well worth it. The first application of eye shadow she put on I thought was too dark for me, so she re-did it in much lighter shimmery tones which looked great. And then on the wedding day she remembered the switch and did a great shimmery eye shadow with dark liner (perfect). I would totally recommend Cheekadee and Aja to friends for wedding or special occasion makeup. P.S. Setting everything up with Abby at Cheekadee was a breeze and very professional (booking the appointment, setting me up with Aja, getting the contract, etc.). Emailing with Nina and Jo to coordinate makeup for our wedding was very pleasant, but our wedding party left feeling disappointed and even offended. The makeup artist, LeeAnn, told two of our guests that they cannot have the look they wanted due to their "hooded eyes". We asked that they not upsell additional services like airbrushing and eyelashes to our guests on the day of, which they agreed to-- only to then individually offer these services without being clear about the added price. It was very unprofessional and frankly not worth the money. The only real positive was that Meghan (hair artist) seemed to be good, even helping out with a few items when there was down time! We were very disappointed with our experience with Cheekadee. I will say that everyone's makeup tuned out fine. However, we were charged full price for some foundation being applied to two of the groomsmen. I felt this was unreasonable because eye makeup is what takes the longest. In addition, when the bride asked to try on several lipsticks before her makeup was applied, she was told they didn't have time. She was also told that the artists had another wedding to get to. No bride wants to be told this on her special day. In addition, in order to have a trial, the bride was asked to drive over an hour in rush hour traffic to NJ and not to the Chestnut Hill location. I felt they could have been more accommodating to our bride since she was coming from out of state. For these reasons I will not be recommending Cheekadee to my friends. read more

We called Cheekadees last minute when the makeup artist for my daughter's wedding cancelled 2 days before the wedding. Luckily they had availability! I worked with Nina from Cheekadee and had a wonderful experience. I am not used to wearing much makeup, so it took me a little time after our initial trial to realize that I wanted to make a few changes on the day of. Nina not only listened to exactly what I wanted, she also ran everything by me before putting it on my face. I was so happy with the outcome and impressed with her ability to quickly change our initial plans. I have to also comment on her professionalism, friendliness, and flexibility. My particular venue did not allow me on site until a certain time, and it would have cut deeply into my photographer's timeline. To help me make sure I got ready in time for my photographer, she let me get ready at the studio (which is very close to my venue). For the first hour, I just used the space to do my hair. She let me plop all of my stuff on the counter and use her space as if it were my home (PS, the studio is very comfy and cozy). I had no idea at the time that my good friends were planning on crashing my "getting ready" session, but out of nowhere a group of my very excited friends showed up with trays of food and wine. I felt so bad, but Nina welcomed them in and did not let it distract her one bit. I'm not saying I recommend you invite all of your girlfriends to the studio for your trial or day of, but I tell the story because it's just another way that Nina showed what a very sweet, patient, flexible, and professional person she is. I'll also note that I am Chinese, and had a hard time finding makeup artists that had a reputation for working with Asian clients, as we have particular needs when it comes to eye makeup. Not only was my makeup stunning, but Emily was wonderful. She was very courteous and very accommodating. I had to reschedule my trial and she was so sweet about it. I adjusted the wedding day schedule the week of the wedding (just slightly), and she had no problem doing so. Just a pleasure to work with. The makeup turned out stunning. The day of my wedding, she made some slight tweaks to complement the hair and the dress, etc. My sister and my mother were so pleased as well. Which says a lot! My mother especially looked beautiful in the pictures. And as she guaranteed, the makeup stayed on all day. Even with me crying literally when the doors opened at the church to the time the mass ended. And I should add, that while most stylist do have a minimum fee for booking their services, Emily included the cost of the trial in the minimum, which was a nice plus I hadn't heard of before speaking with her. I am a wedding photographer. I see oodles of weddings every year. There is a massive, noticeable difference between brides who had their aunt/friend/sister do their makeup and a professional. Your aunt/sister/friend may like makeup, have a big collection, and watch lots of YouTube clips but she's not a professional. She won't know how to make makeup last all day long, she won't know how makeup reacts to various lighting conditions that a bride encounters on her wedding day, she won't know how to apply makeup so that it looks good to guests AND the camera. The ladies at Cheekadee are professionals. I am happy to recommend them which is really important because their professionalism reflects on me. Emily, the head honcho of Cheekadee, is a doll. Nina was fantastic! During my make up trial, she took the time to listen to what my dream 'look' was for my big day and she exceeded my expectations! My wedding day make up looked exactly like my trail (or somehow just a bit better with my hair done). I especially loved getting eyelashes. The make up didn't feel heavy but it may seem heavy the first time you look in the mirror. Don't panic! It will photograph beautifully. The big question is answered - yes, it does last all day! I had my make up done around 11am and my wedding ended at 11:30 pm I felt beautiful on our big day and that was the look I was going for :) read more
