Not impressed. The first time I was there for a cut and highlight my hairstylist was not confident in what she was doing, and asked another stylist there for help. It made me feel uncomfortable, and worried. I expect that at a school, but not at a professional salon. Second visit I had a level 3 stylist for the same thing. OK job with cut and color... Nothing special. The cut was a little too layered at the bottom. I think the kicker was her telling me that I could get my own coffee, forgetting to heat the wax for my eyebrows, and complaining that she had to work at her other job later. I never got an eyebrow wax either... Bad service. It is a nice salon with a trendy atmosphere and classy decor. Unfortunately parking is nonexistent. I found Cheeky Strut on Yelp because I was tired of the haircuts I had been getting. I have naturally curly hair, and I'm a college student so I never went anywhere where the stylists had enough expertise to tell me what would look good, and I never really knew what I wanted. After browsing the website, I wasn't sure. The stylists are rated from 1-5 by their skill level and experience. A haircut with a level five stylist costs $50. I wasn't sure it would be worth it, but then I read the reviews on here and decided to give it a try, even though the website made everyone seem super chic and slightly intimidating. They made me an appointment with Josh because I mentioned that I wanted someone who had experience with curly hair. He is adorable! He has impeccable fashion sense, and a sense of flair and fun. In fact, everyone in the salon looked like they stepped out of some funky fashion magazine, but they were all extremely nice. The salon is bright, new, clean, and played electronic remixes that suited it well. I felt very fashion-forward just being there. Josh was extremely sweet and attentive to my requests, and really knew what he was doing. His cuts last four months without losing shape, and he uses different techniques than most stylists - a French technique from the 1800's when women would set their hair for a week. It was really interesting, and I trusted him right away. I have never, ever, been so happy with a haircut. I actually gave Josh a hug when he was done, lol. I walked out feeling confident and like I had gotten my money's worth, and then some. Also, Josh guarantees his haircuts 110% and told me to call him right away if I had any styling issues. He was a sweetheart, and the other employees were very warm as well. I highly recommend this salon, and Josh especially!! A salon experience, even for a men's cut, shouldn't be 15 minutes. My previous stylist (from where I used to live) made my hair cuts a pleasant experience.. not, "in you go, snip snip, out you go." And my previous stylist's work was artistic and yet had surgical precision where it was needed. I love love love Josh! I am not one for change and having to find a new stylist since I moved to Grand Rapids from Los Angeles was mind boggling. I called to make an appointment and asked the receptionist for their recommendation on stylists based on my hair type. He recommended Josh and I got brave and made the appointment. Josh is so sweet and welcoming! He really listened to what look I was trying to go for and executed perfectly! He also cares very much about his clients and work product and therefore guarantees all his work. If you're not satisfied, just come on back and he'll fix it for free. One of the amazing things about Josh is that he does not try to up-sell the appointment. He doesn't try to push products on you. The salon is very trendy and my hair highlight/lowlight turned out pretty well, other than it was a little too streaky/skunk looking, when I requested that it not be done that way. The biggest issue I had was having products pushed on me. I don't mind suggestions or being asked if I want anything, but just grabbing products & throwing them on the check out counter I do have an issue with. Also, I was told I would get a new client package with coupons, and I did not receive anything. I asked for a receipt and assumed it was in the bag, and did not receive that either. I've waited a while to write this review, as I was quite upset and didn't want it to be dictated by emotions. I've visited this place precisely 3 times. All 3 times were a horrible experience. The latest visit, my stylist was 45 minutes past my appointment time. I finally went to the front desk and asked what was going on. Turns out they double booked. Now, I was having engagement photos done that evening and they asked if I could reschedule AFTER waiting 45 minutes. I time them no, that I had photos that evening, as indicated when I MADE the appointment. No apology. One of the assistants brought me back and I finally got in with the stylist that I booked. I was having my hair colored, trimmed, and styled for the photos. The bleach was not left on my hair anywhere near long enough because I was now an hour and a half past my appointment time. Then as the bleach is getting washed out, a client sat a couple chairs next to me and was told that "this specific chair" is for only their specialty clients. So, I pay the same price, wait well over an hour past my appointment time, and then get to listen to this. My hair color was horrible and the stylist was their highest level! All of this without so much as an apology. I will NEVER go back there. In my opinion, this establishment sure placed themselves on a high horse pedestal and is perpetuated based purely by those that are friends, or get treated like VIP clients that have access to media and platforms to perpetuate this place. I was referred to Sin at Cheeky Strut by a friend of mine, and I'm so glad that I went! The salon is open and bright and beautiful, and the receptionist was very welcoming. As for Sin... He was absolutely fantastic! He's easy to talk with, hilarious, and styles hair with the mindset of a teacher. He did things with combs and a scissors that I'd never seen done before! And he styled my hair perfectly! He asked me questions about my lifestyle and how much work I put into my hair to better figure out a cut that would suit my needs. Knowing that I have an infant, he suggested that I do a global color without highlights so that I wouldn't have to find the time to come in for frequent colorings. When I showed him a pic of a style I fancied, he got right down to explaining how it could work with my face shape and hair maintenance schedule. When I told him that my last stylist wasn't able to duplicate the style as I'd hoped, he explained that many stylists memorize certain cuts and try to fit them to a client, whereas he actually shapes the hair to better suit the client and their look. As for the results, I was beyond pleased! I walked out of the salon feeling great and super satisfied with my cut and color. I needed highlights BAD so I looked on yelp and found Cheeky Strut. I went to see Carly Jo and I was nervous as heck because hairdressers are the worst clients because we are so picky and technical. Let me tell you Carly Jo blew me away. She listened to exactly what i said and gave me exactly the result I asked for. She is very personable. her technical ability especially when it comes to color is truly top-notch. I have worked with many famous hairdressers and world class educators and Carly Jo really has it going on people. She is a level 5 stylist so she is pricer than others but you get what you pay for. if you want perfection you are going to have to shell out for her impeccable industry knowledge and all the hard work she has put into making herself one of the best. I came in looking for an update, a change. I had a 20% off new client code. I am approaching 40 and although I don't want to look like a teenager, I am not ready to shop at Chico's either. The salon is young, hip and trendy. I told the stylist I was thinking of an ombre color and I needed an updated cut for my fine, medium length, brown hair. She took her time and was very thorough. I came in at 3:00 and was meeting someone for dinner at 5:30. I had to text to cancel as there was no way I could make it. This was not your typical in and out experience. $150+ after applying the coupon, 3 hours of my life and I could not tell anything had been done to my hair. I left with the same hairstyle and a smidge of blonde. She asked if I liked the blond and I told her I thought it was too subtle. She replied we could do more next time...what? I suppose you could debate that a with a good stylist, you can't see the changes, but honestly...I am so tired of the same old cut, same old brown color. I wanted to walk out feeling fabulous. Instead I left feeling a little fleeced. They do seem to care about new trends, you get free tea or whatever, but for the cost, I just didn't feel like the trendy hype quite translated into what I got in return. I went with a level 2 stylist. I am afraid of what it might cost with a level 5 and no discount. Ouch. I can do the same blah brown color with a box and a $30 haircut from whoever. read more

I was skeptical at first about going to Cheeky Strut. Why, I don't really have a good reason. One of the stylists dropped off some products at my work as a thank you. I kept thinking I need to call, I need to call, but I kept holding out for some reason. A few girls that I work with told me you HAVE to go to Cheeky and see Joel (the stylist that dropped off some goodies). I finally gave in and called. I could not be happier with the service or my experiences. I wanted to get blunt bangs, and coming from not having any bangs, I wanted to make sure they were done right! Joel did such an amazing job with my hair and bangs I won't go any where else. I went into Cheeky Strut for the first time. There was a group of us getting hair and makeup for a fashion show. I enjoyed my time there very much, beginning to end! The gentleman working the desk was very kind getting me checked in and offered me a hot cup of coffee..yes please! The building itself is a very neat space and decorated very nicely with a mix of antique and modern pieces. It has a very warm, welcoming and clean vibe. The stylist i worked with and the makeup artist were very friendly, effiecient, and very talented. I also do hair and makeup for a living and I can say their work was spot on. The look i needed for the fashion show is edgy and "fem fatale", and they nailed it. I was also very pleased they use airbrush makeup which is the best for stage performance. I then found out they carry my most favorite skin care line so now I can stop in for my products and avoid shopping on line :) Overall I am very impressed and happy with my experience. I am new to the area, and found out about Cheeky Strut through Yelp. I set an appointment with KL. When I went in, the staff was very hospitable and since I am over 21, even offered me wine, which works really well to get on my good side:) We looked through magazines and found a style that I liked. One of the best things, is that KL is conservative about cutting length. I have long hair and I too get nervous about having my hair cut too short. I wanted bangs, and she suggested to get it longer, and if I do not like it, I can come back and she would shorten it complimentary. (Also she offers complimentary bang cutting). I've had my hair done with Sarah at Cheeky Strut Salon numerous times and she's amazing! I was with my previous salon for years and it was going downhill. At my first appointment, Sarah made me feel really comfortable (I'm very picky when it comes to hair stylists) and she was able to fix everything the previous hairstylist did. Sarah spent hours fixing my hair and it looked awesome. Do not be afraid of the pricing because it's located downtown - I paid the same amount as I usually pay at my former, small town hair salon! I had a decent experience at Cheeky Strut, thus the three stars. I had my cut done about a year a half ago, and I should have gotten to this review much sooner than I am now. I liked the informative manner of my stylist: he let me know what would work well for my hair type, and cut it accordingly. He was fixing a bad haircut I received a week before, and for that I am very grateful. The way he cut it has allowed my hair to grow out and become more wavy than it was before. I can let my hair air-dry now and it looks pretty good, whereas before it was cut it looked like a frizzy mess. He even told me to come back if I felt like something wasn't quite right with the cut after playing with it for a few days, and I took him up on that. My bangs weren't quite right, so I came back in and he did the adjustment on them for free. What I didn't like so much was the fact that they stylist never saw my hair before I had been shampoo'ed by one of the assistants. That was a little off-putting. I would think it'd be helpful to see what they natural state of the hair is before getting it wet and cutting it. The initial cut was super cute, but after a month or two, it got harder and harder to control. My hair was now taking twice as long to "do" in the mornings than it ever had before. Maybe I wasn't clear enough with my daily regimen to him, but I don't like to take time for routine maintenance on my hair. It needs to look AND be effortless. One more thing, the front desk guy (can't remember his name, sorry!) was super nice. He greeted my warmly when I came in, offered to take my coat, offered me some water, and told me where I could sit while waiting for the stylist to be ready for me. He made me comfortable in this new setting, wasn't pretentious at all. Once I was in the stylist's chair, he made a great effort to make smalltalk. We talked for a little while, but it definitely was awkward. Not all silence needs to be filled with mindless chatter! It's ok to not talk for a bit while you're cutting my hair, I don't mind the quiet. One big thing that I hope is addressed by the owner, there were two other stylists that weren't working on anyone and decided that they would spend their time talking about their plans for the evening, and other various non-work things (about 5 feet away from me) which I found to be very unprofessional. I am in retail, and I sure don't talk about my personal life in front of customers with other employees because it's just rude, and there are some things that other people just don't want to hear. So yeah, a decent experience. I haven't been back, simply because I think for the price I paid, I think I can find something better out there. read more
