Here are just some of the reasons I love going to Dr. Joannow: 1) She gives me an HIV test as part of my annual exam. It has nothing to do with my sex life, it's just a routine thing that she believes in and I think all doctors should follow suit. 2) In seven years she's maybe bruised my arm drawing blood once. I have colitis so I get a lot of blood tests, and this kind of track record is amazing 3) She's very concerned with female health and likes to be kept in the loop with my ob/gyn. 4) She loves to chat, but also listens and is very responsive to concerns and requests. 5) She's on call. I know it sometimes frustrates her because people take advantage of this, but it really is reassuring knowing that I can ping her on her cell phone in an emergency. 6) She supports local business and turned me on to Olympia Chemists, which is my new pharmacy and beats the hell out of CVS. 7) If she's booked up and you need to get in to see her she'll make every effort to squeeze you in- you just have to be comfortable with waiting patiently for her to have a window of opportunity between scheduled patients. She's not in her Astoria office everyday because she's sometimes at the hospital and I believe also has a practice on Long Island (I might be wrong about that) but she's a tireless and devoted woman who genuinely cares more about the patient than the money. We've shared many a gripe about Insurance companies and poor interpersonal skills within the health care industry. Again, I can't promise that a doctor that's right for me will be right for you, but I recommend giving her a try. Oh, also of note, she has a policy for referrals and other types of paper work. She prefers to have a week to get that sort of stuff done, because doing it all at the time of request would eat-up her time with patients. It's a bit of a pain, but I understand why she has that policy and I appreciate the thought behind it.

Her contact information came out when I did the specialist search through my health insurance provider and I was able to make an appointment to see her very quickly for my first visit. She was affiliated with NYU, so she was able to pull up all my medical records with NYU through her system. She reviewed my medical records with me to ensure she had a complete pictures of my medical situation. She also checked and tested all my joints very carefully to identity any potential issues. She then decided to prescribe a medication to me to treat my condition and she clearly explained all the possible side effects of the medication. Instead of just sending me a prescription, she explained to me why she chose this particular medication over the other alternative options. She also provided me information about the co-pay assistance program that was available to this specific medication to reduce my out-of-pocket cost. Lastly, she wanted me to do x-ray imaging on certain areas of my body and blood work. She was nice enough to call me to discuss the blood work result and imaging result a few days after the lab. Normally other doctors would just hold the results till my next visit, but Dr. Tseng called me to go over the results even though everything came out good. Dr. Tseng is very caring, professional, knowledgeable and patient. By the way, her office manager (Ms. May) is very nice and helpful! My health insurance provider required pro-approval for the medication and there were lots of back and forth between the insurance, specialty pharmacy and Dr. Tseng's office, but Ms. May handled it very well and I received the prescribed medication in a reasonable time. Not to mention then having to pay out of pocket for the medication itself. That is absolutely absurd! Talk about greed! You would think being a medical provider help out your patient especially if you're aware the medication is needed. I was baffled as to why wouldn't the doctor give a few refills now it makes perfect sense! Everytime you need one you call them and if you have insurance they slap your insurance with a fee and if you don't have insurance well cash it up! Cons: It seems Dr. Alwani can only handle something very typical or inconsequential. Anything requiring specialists, referrals, or medication out of her typical prescription was beyond her knowledge. I had to talk to her and advocate for this monthly medication that I know my insurance covered. Then she was trying to tell me about not being able to increase the dosage in my medication after several months (which I disagreed with). Then when she looked it up she realized SHE was misinformed and she can increase the dosage. She required appointments to meet with me to prescribe my monthly medication, yet those appointments were well after the medication would have finished?? I felt like I needed to constantly advocate for myself and I was callinger her office montly, if not more often. It felt as if the office was very much over my constant calls. Trust me, I certainly didn't like calling, but I needed to call for her to do ANYTHING. Summary: She is fine for typical stuff like the flu and asthma. If you have any more significant diagnosis, you will need to do A LOT of self-advocating as Dr. Alwani/ her office doesn't often take initiative. His broad knowledge (he is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics) and his laser-focused attention to detail offer me great calm and positivity in my current uncertain medical situation that is absolutely necessary for my eventual (and hopefully full) recovery. There's nothing like a serious illness to cause stress and anxiety in all areas and aspects of one's life, and Dr. Richter's reassuring advice, great sense of humor and sage instruction has eased that anxiety and provided a stable foundation on which to begin my journey to wellness. I came to Dr. Richter on the advice of a friend just over a year ago when I left my doctor in Manhattan who had far too many patients in his large group practice to notice that I was actually far more ill than he had diagnosed. Dr. Richter, a rare solo practitioner in Rego Park, recommended a battery of tests that my other doctor had not, and unfortunately, the diagnosis was bladder cancer. Thankfully, and solely due to Dr. Richter's insistence, care and genuine concern for my health, we caught it early and are currently working to resolve the issue in a few different ways. Thank God for doctors like Dr. Richter! There simply are not enough of them, and it will be a very sad day for the people of this city if Dr. Richter ever decides to retire.
