There are additional amenities, such as basketball courts, kiddie pool.& much more. The Pool is open seasonally and is closed on Tuesdays. Built in 1970 the non profit is run by a Pool Board and Volunteers. Neighborhood & Member events are varied and plentiful. Memberships are available at the Individual, Couple and Family Rates with Guest Passes available for purchase by members. There is a Senior Discount. The location is in the Pembroke Meadows neighborhood off Independence Boulevard. Before the Bayside Recreation Center was built it was the swimming choice for many residents of Bayside with children and teens. Parents spent hours t by the pool even though it was well staffed with lifeguards. It was a great place for kids to swim and socialize with their friends. It was fun for parents to meet and socialize on the pool deck, Pembroke Meadows Marlins is the swim team for the Center. It's a great way for kids to learn swim competition and develop their skills in the different strokes. Swim meets were held early in the morning on weekends. The pool is closed during this time. My son developed excellent swim skills during the time period when he was young and we were members. The early morning swim meet times were tough though for this night owl. :) It's hard for many Bayside residents to envision a time before the Bayside Rec Center was built. Pembroke Meadows filled the swimming void during that time. Last year I was watching my son and grandson swimming from the bleachers at the pool. I met a man who was waiting for his Grandson to finish swim team practice. I told him my son had been on the swim team at Pembroke Meadows. He said that his was also. Time had passed. Generations had changed. The kids that swam at Pembroke Meadows then now have children of their own. Thank you Pembroke Meadows Pool & Swim Team for the years of fun. A special thanks go out for the skills my son learned on the swim team. He has passed them on to his son.

I did learn today that the facility will be open for selected weekends in September. This will be dependent on temps and precip that day. I thought since they were standing there and it was two of them perhaps one of them could get a massage to the coach. BMAC as it is most affectionately known, is an indoor swimming pool ran by the city of Newport…read moreNews. It offers more than just a pool in the building as I will further go into. The day to day operation has a staff of city of NN employees. The location of the facility sets on the Newport News/Hampton border and is off the Mercury/Jefferson corridor close to the James River Bridge. The parking lot can easily accommodate many visitors, however when large swim meets are taking place it fills. The staff take great strides to keep the building clean and well maintained. The guards are all Red Cross certified and in my experience very competent and care about the safety of those that participant in their programs. The pool itself is a 50 meter competition pool with movable bulk heads for conversion to 25 yards (basically splitting the 50 in half). The pool for Short Course season (25 yards) keeps the bulkhead in the middle. The deck around pool has three rows of spectator seating. Visitors are NOT allowed to bring in food, or swim back packs inside the aquatic area. The pool features two 3 meter diving boards. Restrooms and locker rooms are available. As well deck showers are outside the locker rooms. Two year around clubs utilize the pool. The Coastguards Blue Devils and the SEVA Seahawks. At the times these clubs would conduct practice part of the pool would be closed off, but lanes would be made available for pass members etc. The building also offers a gym with a full basketball court, a daycare, multi-pourpose rooms for dance, yoga, etc. There is a room that offers a kitchen with sink, stove and refrigerator. A large under cover outside area features three basketball courts. You can rent out the multi-purpose rooms and pool for parties. Daily passes ($3-$5), punch cards ($19-$24), annual and collegiate passes ($50-$70) are available for both Newport News and non residents at an up charge. All of these prices in my experience are very reasonable. The facility itself is in the red every year. The city of NN subsidizes to a great degree which is wonderful for those that utilize this very nice aquatic facility. It would be hard to believe if you are a Newport News, or Hampton resident that you do not know about this facility. This is a major asset to not only the Newport News, but to Hampton Roads. This Aquatic Center offers the ONLY 50 meter pool used for Long Course competition. I encourage you to check it out if this is something that you, or family can utilize.

It's a strange thing to try to put a Yelp rating to, because this is a small park. When they say…read moreonly eight parking spots and nowhere else in the area to park or access the trails, they mean it. And when you hit the beach, you'll struggle to walk far in either direction amongst the driftwood. It was maybe a little over an hour visit for me, and maybe you could push it a little more if you did all the side trails. But I guess the thing for me is that I don't really have any desire to see them do anything different with the space. While much of the shoreline is developed or inaccessible, this area offers a fascinating variety of landscapes. The flora shift dramatically and suddenly, and you don't need signage to tell you where one zone ends and another begins. The diversion off of the main highway is not a huge one, and it is an interesting and worthwhile site.

Look for the kiosk sign, it's a small dirt parking lot. It's easy to miss if you don't pay attention. The lot is said to house 8 cars. Trails are not paved and consist of a mixture of dirt, root laden and sand terrain. There is a small boardwalk to cross on one of the trails that leads to beach access that veers to the right. The trail that leads to the right is roughly Half a mile to slightly a 3/4 mile to the beach. I recommend wearing shoes and not flip flops. I did have shoes on. The starting trails have plenty of shade. We only took one of the three trails due to limited time and it was dark by the time we made it back. They do close the gate by sunset. I happened to be too busy looking at my phone on the way back and actually walked right into the gate. If you do go to catch the sunset, make sure you give yourself at least 10-15 minutes to get back or else you will be stuck using your cellphone flashlight to find your way back or maybe bring a headlight just in case. Also, I didn't have cellphone service, so make sure if you visit in the evening, that you let people know of your whereabouts, prior to heading out in case of an emergency. On the website they say there are no bathrooms, but I happened to see a port a potty on one part of the trail. It looks like a nice place to take walks and explore. I would like to go back and check out the other trails.
