Counter service busy to buy the baked delights

Breakfast Review and Tips! We got there early close to opening. This was handy in that snagging a table and a car park can be tricky in this popular venue. There's table service but I think they have their trainer wheels on so grab someone when you can. Coffee was good but I'd like to see more hipster passion put into the most important first impression a cafe has - coffeeee! It's a great menu with good variety. I'd like to go back a few more times to try other choices. I'd also like to see a few risky adventurous challenging menu inclusions. I love the shiny butchers tiles that abound in this trendy fit out. As Arnie says I'll be be back - and be expecting a little more edge. But they're off to a good start.

The Twix cake

Finally made my way down to Chester Street today for lunch and cake! At first glance, I was unimpressed with the building itself but I quite liked the decor inside. Plus, the closer I got, the more I could smell a mixture of cake and bacon so it was pretty heavenly haha. The outdoor deck seating area was crazily hot this afternoon. We were under umbrellas but they were dark umbrellas that absorbed the heat and passed it on down to us lol. The tables and chairs were deck/picnic style but were sturdier than many I've seen around so that's always good. Service wise, it's hot and cold. The first person I spoke to was very friendly and receptive. She was excited when I told her it was my first time there. One other person who served our food and drinks was a bit more reserved and seemed a bit unapproachable but at least she gave us what we asked for. We had ordered coffees which took forever so after 30 mins we asked someone to follow it up and they brought them out apologetically and returned our money :) #props Food wise, so I first had avocado on sourdough (12.90) with added poached eggs (2 for $4). The sourdough toast was a bit hard and rubbery but I managed to cut it up in bite sized pieces. The avocado was a bit wet. I needed a whole heap of salt but once I added it, boy was it yummy. The poached eggs were runny THANK GOODNESS! And then for dessert, I had a Twix cake ($10.90) and oh boy was it rich! Though I personally found it too creamy and too spongey. Just like a heap of sweet frothness that needed more depth in flavour (sharper, saltier caramel? Actual twix biscuits through it?). Thank goodness for the potato chips on top (that's right) to provide that other element which gave the cake a much needed crunch. Sadly I gave up after the third little spoonful. I took it away for later haha. I can never waste anything!! I think it's more of a personal thing though. I like my dessert with both hard and soft elements, not just one dimensional in consistency. So overall my experience was fairly satisfactory. I would go back and try the tarts/pie.

Cake! Cake! Cake!

Chester St Bakery is the older sensible sister to Alfred and Constance. It still has all the great stylish quirks of A&C: clean design accompanied with great products; breakfast, coffee, cake and cocktails. But it looses the frivolities that are not always to everyone's everyday-taste (the leis upon arrival, the sweat, the feeling that the floor may collapse under the weight of countless people outrageously dancing to "No Diggity"). With one of the best cake selections I've ever seen, Chester St Bakery and Bar is an ideal place for coffee and cake at sensible or non-sensible cake hours (2:30pm (sensible), 8pm (non-sensible- you're just about to go the bed, you don't need that much cake)). While it may be a bit on the pricey side, Chester St definitely nails both quality and quantity. Worth a visit!

Do you like the bread and the cakes at Alfred & Constance? If you do, you'll love it here at Chester Street Bakery, because this is where it comes from. In fact, you'll probably be familiar with the character, slight quirkiness, delicious food and excellent service that you may have experienced at Alfred & Constance or at Alfredo's, because they are all owned and run by the same people. Wood fired pizzas, great cocktails, delicious cakes, excellent service and a great atmosphere - can you ask for more?

Had been excited about finally getting to the new Chester Street Bakery after lots of hype on social media about it. We arrived this morning at about 9.30am and after struggling to find on street parking we were expecting to be queuing for a table. As it turned out they had only just opened their doors and we were among the first to arrive. I get the sense that they are still finding their way because the staff were a little slow to get going and didn't seem to be quite sure about what each should be doing. A number of the early patrons, me included, queued at the counter to place our breakfast orders only to be told it was table service. Service issues aside the coffee is fine although not a specialty or passion and the food was tasty. I had the Duck pie with field mushrooms and pear chutney and enjoyed every mouthful. I think we'll return in a little while to see how they've progressed - or not.

Heaven for the sugar lover ! We stumbled on this bakery while attempting to walk off dinner ... obviously that failed when we saw Chester St. Bakery. The unique bar/bakery combo in this area seems to have business all day serving breakfast, lunch and dinner but the draw for me is all the cakes and sweets displayed to attractively around the shop. Each time I have been here, it was for a late night sugar hit and I have not been disappointed. I love how the cakes have so much height - it was a wow factor and a sensory delight! They have some pretty wacky cakes like the twix cake with potato chips on the top (not as bad as you'd think ... think McDonald's french fries dipped in McDonald's sundae - most people have done that right?) and cakes bound to make one smile like the rainbow layered cake. My favourite so far is the raspberry - sherbet - meringue layered cake . Mmmm Definitely recommend this place whenever you are in the area and wanting a sugar hit. Bound to make the regular sugar lover smile just by looking :).

I've been frequenting this place regularly and they'd have to have one of the best Bahn Mi offerings outside of West End and Sunnybank. Whilst more pricey than most places, the Bahn Mi here boast a load of filling and flavour - with the pork meatball offering being the best. The pies are also worth checking out, as is the wide variety of hot food in the cabinet at the front - steer clear of the spring rolls though. They ain't great.

These guys do a great one. I'd really love it if they'd add a hit of maggi sauce, and some sharper pickled veg. I'd also love it if they'd add the pate that is so common in Vietnam. But these are quibbles with what are a: cheap, b: great value and c: very tasty sandwiches. They'll add a really cracking chilli paste if you ask them. They also do great noodle salads for under $8. The meatball and spring roll is a personal favourite. I probably wouldn't rate them as a replacement for Mrs Luu's over in Miltion which is doing really great things with Vietnamese 'street' lunches of all persuasions. That said, Central Brunswick Bakery punches well above the weight of the standard small family bakery and is terrific value. I'm assured their cold ricepaper rolls are also lovely and they stock standard bakery fare as well.

You will find something tol fulfill your every craving, from a passionfruit tart to lamb & rosemary pie to their candied walnuts. Thankfully their price tags prevent me from making decisions my metabolism will regret, though it means I haven't tried much of their offerings. On a special occasion, I called in to order a small flourless chocolate cake (34) - an easy choice when choosing for a chocolate lover. I was rather excited, as I'd never been able to justify going to Jocelyn's Provisions "just because." The flourless chocolate cake is a dense chocolate cake with chocolate nuts, and toffee and praline bits. Not having looked at the pictures too closely previously, we were all impressed with the sugar lattice on the cake. Although a bit of a strange combination to have paired chocolate with a sugar lattice (flavour-wise), it was a lovely touch to the cake. It says online that the small cake is for 6 people, but we managed to make eight pieces, with all of us being satisfied (and even having some difficulty finishing the cake after dinner at Siam Samrarn). Needless to say, that was one delicious rich and dense chocolate cake! Even though I tend to not be a fan of chocolate cakes - or just cakes in general - if you want a scrumptious and impressive looking cake, this is the place to go!

Right from the start, when you walk through the store there's always someone available to take your order. For sure the star of the show is the variety of freshly baked breads and pastries. Everything is made in house and it shows! Every bite is delicately balanced with the right amount of sweetness. When I finally had time to return to New Farm, I made sure I paid a visit to Chouquette. Needless to say, I had great expectations to what they had to offer! Their website had given me a taste of what was in store, and I was excited for the extensive variety of bread rolls, pastries, and cakes. When I approached Chouquette, I really had expected it to be much busier, with people sitting around and conversing with French coffees - but I found it rather empty. The glass cases had a few sandwiches, a few cakes and pastries, with a few bread rolls in the back shelf- not at all what I expected, actually. The place didn't seem particularly French (though I really couldn't say what is and isn't) - no warm ambience, cold chairs and decor inside and out, and their offerings were very meager, and mostly not particularly aesthetically pleasing compared to what they displayed online. It was a bit of a disappointment to find that I couldn't find the variety of items that I saw online, and everything was a bit pricy. I did have the orange chocolate cake, which looked the most appealing, and was actually really rich and delicious (good for sharing), but I was sorely disappointed with their bread roll, which was way too dry. I'm not sure if I should have tried anything in particular- and if I just missed out on some of the good stuff, but unfortunately, Chouquette didn't leave me daydreaming about France.

I was skeptical - mainly because it was right in our backyard, and I figured his big-noting was due to not bothering to try the competition. Turns out I was wrong to second-guess his statement. This is actually the best bakery I have ever been to. In my life. Having lived in Melbourne and Brisbane and travelled reasonably extensively. The thing that makes this place so special to me, is its unassuming nature. It's not fancy. The owners haven't spent thousands of dollars making the place look modern and slick and trendy - instead they continue to display their delectable fare in regulation glass shelving with windows. The name cards are handwritten, and the sandwiches are made in the back in clear view of the shop front. This is where I should start my review. The sandwiches. OH THE SANDWICHES! Thick cut bread - white or wholemeal, or grain. Stuffed with all manner of toppings - my favourite being the Ploughmans. This comes teaming with moist roast beef, piled high with delicious fresh salads and lashings of spicy, sweet relish. It's a joy to behold, and I can only ever eat half of one despite my best efforts. The pies and pastries are all here in all manner of flavours, but at this window my favourite is the bacon and cheese. Unlike many pies of the same name, this comes with chunky slightly chewy bacon pieces that are cut into different imprecise sized squares. The cheese is a welcome surprise when it hits, as it too is random in its size and placement throughout the mix. It's always chewy and smooth and mixes with the bacon and delicious beef and gravy mix perfectly. The pastry is golden and fluffy and makes the fresh flaky sound when you crunch into it that I love. The cupcakes are second-to-none. I have yet to get past their simple small buttery vanilla cupcakes with white icing and pastel coloured hearts. I will order four in a white cardboard box as a 'congratulations', 'I'm sorry' or 'just because' gift as I know the recipient will give me one. ;) They are so moist, so fluffy and so soft in the mouth it's like they were made by a cupcake fairy. The icing is perfection - too often you have to fight your way through thick layers of tasteless sugary plates atop your cake, but this is different. The perfect thickness, this icing has a slight crunch to it and it perfectly blends with the creamy buttery cake underneath. The staff are always cheerful if not run-off-their-feet, although I often wonder how they do it with no air conditioning - especially in the humidity and heat of a Brisbane Summer. The prices are a little more than you would pay elsewhere, but 100% deserved. You can purchase a variety of cold drinks including a variety of juice and trendy sodas (my favourite extra treat is the cherry cola). This place doesn't need to advertise at all besides its time-honoured chalk board on the footpath. It has relied on word of mouth, which has clearly spread like wildfire all over the city as this place is almost always PACKED. And for very good reason. My top tip is to grab your savory and dessert items, pick out a beverage (I hear they do great coffee too) and cart your feast to the nearby park. The kids will LOVE it and you will be enveloped by the bliss that only quality, fresh baked goods can bring.
