Now I come occasionally to check it out with my friends still in Southside. My favorite vendors that come here are Maharajah Coffee and First Stop Donuts. I love the people running them! I enjoy that it's right in the park so there are quite a few benches to sit on. There are also fun paths to explore with a warm drink and yummy snacks. I highly recommend ordering goodies from the vendors then having a picnic in Forest Hill Park. On my recent visit, I bought some rainbow carrots, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, fennel, and Europa fresh bread. As it gets colder there can be fewer vendors, but they carry everything you could hope and dream of. I loved checking out a vendor that sold holiday candles. There is tons of parking here and it's easy to bike or bus to. I'd recommend checking this market out.

I think because there is a small amount of booths, something about it feels even more like a community. The booths can change throughout the weeks, but some of my top visited ones are Oro Pasta, Agriberry Farm, and Amy's Garden. Live music is played by Bobby Joe Small. He is so friendly and kind! He'll bring a bunch of small instruments and leave them on the ground around him for children to play along. There is a good mix of food options here. I usually am able to do a majority of my grocery shopping for the week at this market. I really love Birdhouse Farmers Market and can't rave enough about it.

Not only are they open during the week, they're open afternoon instead of morning. I know right?! How unusual! I found this smallish market because I was taking the back streets, avoiding some gnarly traffic. It's tucked away behind Byrd house, hidden from everything. In its little grassy lawn, right off the Byrd House garden it's a lot like a little oasis. Parking isn't easy, since it's Oregon Hill near VCU. They say that there's a parking lot open but perhaps I'm blind, I've never noticed it. Nice veggies, friendly people, some artists and performers make for a nice atmosphere. Every week they raffle off a box of CSA veggies for the next week. I've never entered but you gotta admit, it's better odds than the lottery! Great place and great if you couldn't bring yourself to get up early enough for the market on the weekend!

I was extemely hesistant going here in the winter b/c of: cold weather and limited selection and variety. I was wrong. I came here a couple of weeks with a friend who suggested we check it out and I am very glad she convinced me to go! There are available parking spaces EVERYWHERE. There was only about 20 or so cars in the front of the parking area and I never get to park there b/c it's so packed in the summer. There was still a decent amount of people coming and going even though it was in the 30s/40s. I got the Pork Sausage Biscuit from Real Country Sausage and it was heavenly as i remember it. Buttery biscuit with an amazing and juicy pork sausage patty. We also got a Ms. Yoders donut of course and that didn't dissappoint either. I think the only main difference between the summer and winter market is that there is a vastly smaller selection of fruits/vegetables in the winter time. The only vegetables I really saw were Kale. I was also able to buy some locally hand made soap for my GF as part of her care package. There's also a new screen print shop in town and they're called Flood Factory. They're similar to RVA threads and I almost bought a shirt from them but they didn't have my size. It's great to see this place popping even in the winter time.

We got a great haul at the farmers market today, especially for February!…read more My husband and I started out with bacon, egg & cheese sandwiches on fresh rolls from Jadeans Six O food truck- delicious and huge! But be prepared to wait a few minutes because they are made to order. We also grabbed a cup of coffee from Alchemist coffee- the Chia latte hit the spot on a slightly chilly morning. We ended up stocking our freezer with pork shoulder steak & ground pork from Babes in the Woods, some breakfast sausage from Tuckahoe Cattle Co, andouille & hot ground sausage from Dockery Branch Farms and some ground beef, NY strip steak & stew beef From Deer Run Farms in Amelia (they give you a helpful tip sheet on how to best prepare your steak). We obviously haven't tried any of the meats yet but will update with info as we cook them! As far as produce goes: We got some yummy Pink Lady Apples & Spicy Pepper Jelly from Ellen's Jams & Jellies. We also snagged some delicious dill pickle chips & pickled garlic cloves (called draculas dilemma, haha) from Sweet. Sour. Salty & Co. We sampled some tasty wildflower honey from Alfredo's Honey (super nice guy!) and ended up buying some cinnamon honey whip (yumm!), I could eat this stuff straight from the spoon!! As far as breads go we picked up some yummy smelling (and tasting!) Rosemary potato baguette from Tater Dave's and a beautiful cheese & basil baguette that we will be eating with our fresh John's Secret Marinara from Yohman's Garden (she was sampling this out and that sold us on it, sooo good :) We ended our day with a stop at the always pleasing Boka Truck. Hubby got a pork belly taco while I stuck with a Classic Asian taco. We were pleased as always with our food truck fare. Thus completing our first outing at the SOJ Winter Market. We will definitely be coming back, especially in the warmer months!

I feel they should encourage the growers to bring more fruits and vegetables. In addition, some of the fruits are picked green so they can ripen there... I however wanted the Hanover Tomatoes and they were at a high of $3.98 a lb. I bought 3 tomatoes and it was well over $8. I will wait until prices come down. They also have a large and nice assortment of potted plants and hangers for your porch.

This is a great healthy snack with a reasonable price. They are very conscious of non-profits and were very accommodating to ours and were happy to participate as a vendor for our Fostering Hope Next Level Camp. I ordered the charcuterie board ($28), a chicken salad croissant sandwich ($14), and the Lavender Bees Knees ($8). The drink was very pretty but not super flavorful. The chicken salad was good enough, but I think the croissant alone would have been wonderful. The charcuterie board had a substitutions I was not made aware of upon ordering (no pepper jelly, blanched almonds instead of candied pecans, and a green onion mixed type goat cheese with bacon in it instead of maple bacon goat cheese). They did add little pickles and the presentation was pretty enough, but no flowers like the owner posted photo on here. The meat was pretty thick which could be a positive or negative depending on personal preference, and the meat was decent quality. The fig jam was very good. The waitress who was helping the other tables had brought my food out but didn't check on me at all. I had to go up to the counter again to order a cinnamon roll ($8) and a coffee ($5) which she brought out to me. The coffee was nice and dark (Cameo blend) and incredibly hot. The cinnamon roll was okay, not very much cinnamon flavor but it was delicate and the icing was decent. The interior was pretty and it was a good spot to read a book and spend a morning.
