However, it actually was better than anticipated and didn't disappoint. I have heard about this place being the best for banh mi for a long time but never got a chance to try it. We came to the Palo Alto farmers market the other day and I wanted to try this place. It had a long line but I saw that it was moving fast. So, I stood there and waited for my turn and ordered the vegetarian Banh mi. The stall I believe is run by a single family. I saw the dad handling the orders and money and the rest of the folks assembling the sandwiches and handing them to customers. We took our sandwiches and headed to the beach. Thus used to be my go to place for Banh Mi. Today i ordered the pork belly and vegetarian to take home and the price was $1 from before which i can understand. What a big disappointment ! There was hardly shy pork in my sandwich and the vegetarian which is supposed to have tofu and seitan only has two paper thin slices if Seiran, no tofu at all. This is my Sunday stop to my local Farmers Market ! Cash only so I make sure I've got enough for my Banh Mi. I've tried the original , pork , beef and chicken. I tend to eat later so I was told the beef or chicken is better when eaten later . The pork has a crunchy part that will be best enjoyed when eaten right away. The staff is very helpful and the line will go fast if you're patient . If I have to waist more then 15 min for my order ( the staff will tell you eat wits time) I will go shopping nearby and come back . They will hold your order til you claim it . Run by the same people who already run the very popular crepe stand, I can get a hearty sandwich close to my roots. I go so often they know me on a first name basis! You have four options: classic with ham and pate, roast chicken, steak, and pork belly. Is that in order from traditional to non? Maybe. Either way, I always get the pork belly. You have your classic fixings - pickled carrots and daikon, cucumbers, cilantro, and mayo spread. I really like their bread - crispy but still very easy to bite without cutting my mouth. This isn't your super cheap Lee Sandwiches banh mi. It'll be $7-8 bucks. But I do think they offer a little more outside of the norm and I believe their sandwiches stand on their own. My kingdom for some authentic banh mi! Having grown up eating banh mi, I had been searching high and low for a good place in my region of the Bay Area. I think I finally found it. A little tent on the side of the road during the California Ave Farmer's Market (every Sunday), they serve banh mi in four flavors: Steak, Rotisserie Chicken, Marinated Pork, and Classic (ham and pate), varying from $7 to $8. You can also get Orangina for $2 and water for $1. My Classic banh mi had that authentic blend of flavors for a truly spectacular sandwich. It starts with good spiciness. I asked for spicy, and it did have that kick. It wasn't crying-on-the-floor spiciness, as really good authentic banh mi has, but it did the job. And then the sweet-salty spread (some sort of mustard/mayo conconction?), combined with the saltiness of the ham and the pate, complemented by the pickled radishes, carrots and cilantro? That's a little slice of heaven right there. If I had one complaint, it's that banh mi shouldn't cost more than $5 ($4 is typical where I'm from). Alas,such is life in the Bay Area. I contemplated dropping them down to 4 stars for the price, but that would be an affront to my taste buds. You should thank them for lobbying against my wallet to keep Chez Eatery at 5 stars. We decided to try this banh mi place in the farmers market as I was lining up for the crepes next to it. The banh mi with the pork belly is crazy good. It's the type of pork belly that is crispy on the outside and melts as you bite into it. Be warned that It has a spicy kick to it. I think they are a relatively new operation since they don't seem to have all of their setup processes fully dialed in, and they asked for feedback on their sandwiches, but there is nothing "newbie" about the flavors. I had the pork belly banh mi with jalapenos, pickled carrots, pickled daikon, cucumber, and cilantro. The belly was just the right combination of crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside. They also make their own sandwich rolls which are just the right balance of bread to filling, and just the right balance of fluffy bread and chewy crust. I'll definitely go back soon, and while I'd like to try everything they make, passing up on another opportunity to have the pork belly will be difficult. read more

We got the pork belly sandwich, which we were told would take 10-15 minutes after we had already stood in line for 10. After an additional 30 minutes we finally got our food - way too long for a sandwich. The pork belly is cooked excellently, but the entire sandwich is incredibly bland. There's no flavor in the pickled veggies or whatever sauce they use on the bread. I heard the chicken is better, but as long as all the other toppings are bland, I can't imagine it's much better. read more
