And there we were, brunching again. This time we decided to invite some friends along with us. We'd be recommended Chicago Café by another friend a while back as being the best brunch spot in Brussels. Always skeptical after previous "best brunch spots," we decided to give it a shot. Making reservations can be such a headache. We had tried to call the previous weekend to reserve a table for the next weekend, but no one answers the phone. When they did, albeit a previous attempt, the quickly sprouted, "Werefullallweekendbye," before the click of the line disconnecting. Ultimately we happened to be in the area, and made a reservation in person. The three of us all ordered American breakfasts. I typically order something I cannot make at home when I go to a brunch place, but this time I figured I'd see if they could pull off an American breakfast. They couldn't. My eggs were still runny, not the yolk, but the white. The pancakes weren't hot, so the slab of butter didn't melt on them. Meh. The whole thing was really mid. To top this off, we also ordered a round of mimosas. I'm not sure if the bottle of bubs (which clearly wasn't champagne I might add) had been opened all morning and had gone flat, or they're putting white wine in there, but the wife agreed as well that it was pretty much orange juice. Wouldn't go back. Underwhelming. However... The reason it doesn't get two starts it's that the price of the breakfast was only 15€. Had it had been more, it would have been two. read more

Looking for a can't miss brunch/breakfast spot in Brussels's City Centre then look no further than Chicago Cafe. When you arrive you may very well be greeted with a long line but the waitstaff makes sure that it moves along quickly and efficiently. Chicago Cafe has a hip American vibe but the food has the Belgium taste. When we were seated, the waitstaff wasted no time in taking care of our order in a friendly manner. My daughter and I both order the American Breakfast and it was very good and better than we expected. As an American, you tend to be picky about breakfast but Chicago Cafe didn't disappoint. The breakfast was cooked to order and our specfic requests were handled with no problems. We have been back again and the experience was just as good as the first. Chicago is a hipster cafe around St. Catherine. On a weekday morning around 11, it was pretty much deserted, and was easy to grab a table. It's low-key and colorful in a way that reminds me of some spots in Two Bridges in New York, like Dimes or Jajaja. Unfortunately, they only do brunch on weekends, so our options were limited to breakfast or lunch. We got two different sandwiches (11 euro each) that were fairly basic but hit the spot. The brie and apple was nice. We only had menus with French and Flemish so that was a bit difficult. Prices are pretty high-- I would expect to spend 15 euros on food here. What made the experience for me was the speculoos latte (3.50 euro), which was deliciously creamy and lightly sweet. I was bouncing along all day. Service was meh. Cash only. Great cafe with lots of seating, breakfast was great! Had a lovely fruit salad which consisted of many types of fruits such as pomegranates and mango, yum! I also had a chocolate croissant and a cappuccino which was lovely as well. They have a fair menu (typical dishes), at this point if you are looking for food feedback, I would advice the read the other reviews, since we haven't eaten here. There is enough seating, free wifi and an ample choice of beverages (coffees, tea, alcohols, soda). This could become another hot spot. Give a few more weeks (open for 2 weeks now) for the staff to get some experience (had to wait a bit on 1 drink + paying was not as easy as it would seem for a 4 EUR drink) and find their flow and you got yourself a good new trendy place for brunch/lunch/dinner and drinks. The interior is inspired on trendy vintage design features with white painted brick walls. It give the place a hip Bruxellois feeling. The staff were very friendly here and the service was great. We sat outside as it was really warm and had a beer. Me and my partner were starting to get hungry so we shared a burger and chips it was really nice the burger it's self was a little undercooked for me but we did say medium so was my own fault should have said medium well. Nice discovery walking along Rue de Flandre looking for a spot in the sun. The small terrace in front is great for people watching and soaking up a few rays. It also looks nice inside- big and bright and airy. The whole place has a funky mix and match/second hand feel about it. The onion tart and salad were nice, even if the salad leaves were more bitter than I usually like, but that's just a personal preference. The house lemonade is fresh and sharp and delicious. The espresso is nicely presented in a tiny glass on a vintage China plate, and it's good and strong. Service was great too, warm, friendly and attentive. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this funky little diner during my visit to the city. It has a fun, inviting vibe to it and the food is absolutely wonderful. I decided to order one of their recommended breakfast plates and I was very surprised with the size of the portions. For the price I paid, it was a very nice-sized meal that left me satisfied well through the day. From the crisp, delicious produce to the perfectly cooked eggs and accompaniments, it's rather easy to recommend Chicago Cafe to tourists and locals alike. Came here for brunch as a backup because we were too cold to wait in line for Peck 47. We were seated immediately. The decor was trying for a funky hip mismatched type vibe - but honestly the combination of the unfinished wooden furniture, outdated tables/chairs and clutter (e.g. Coat rack stands, children's pictures, etc) made it feel like a weird daycare to me rather than a "hip" brunch spot. The menu is huge and reminded me of a more internationally influenced modern diner. I ordered the guacamole toast which came with a side "salad" and my friend ordered the English breakfast which also came with tea. My toast was great - they were super generous with the guacamole and I'm pretty sure they fried the bread in butter because it tasted amazing! The "salad" on the side though was some sort of weird barley salad with tomatoes and cucumbers and was super bland and tasteless - I ended up not eating it. It would be significantly improved with maybe a little vinegar or a lemon on the side - also I wish it was more of a salad as it was way more barley rather than vegetables. My friend loved his English breakfast though, said he liked it better than what he had when he lived in London even. Overall I think the rating for the place is a bit low as the food was pretty good! It also seems like a pretty big local spot as everyone around us was speaking French, so nice as a tourist to get off the beaten path. We chose to visit this eatery due to its name. We were able to seat ourselves right as we walked into the establishment (it was a gorgeous day so we took advantage of one of the four patio tables. As Chicagoans, we wanted to know what was up with the name. Our server directed the owner/manager/boss to our table who explained this history of this neighborhood and the café's (sad) namesake. Roughly twenty years ago, this neighborhood was considered quite rough. The journalists often wrote about the state of the neighborhood and compared it to Chicago. Over time the neighborhood changed however the owners wanted to pay homage to that period in their neighborhood's history hence, the Chicago Café. I ordered the Mushroom Omelette with cheese and a side of bacon and my partner had the Full English. The food was delicious! I'm glad this was our first breakfast stop in Bruxelles. The fresh orange juice was simply divine (medium pulp). Service was impeccable and I am glad that we had the opportunity to learn more about this neighborhood and the café. read more

First time here and I love it already! Got a friendly welcome when we arrived, so rare in Brussels! The food was delicious, fresh and very reasonably priced. I ordered a ginger, carrot & orange juice cocktail, a ham & cheese omelette & a speculoos latte. All were delicious! The omelette was more cheese than any other ingredient (nothing to complain about here), the juice was fresh & the latte was a sweet treat to tie it all together. As for pricing, it's the same as eating in any major city in the US, nothing seemed abnormally expensive, especially when taking in to consideration the quality and size. Came to work while drinking tea on Sunday afternoon . Great space, a lot of lights and color (but not too much colors). Tons of plugs. Quite large and original choice of beverages. Large and children-friendly space (which means it can get noisy even if that was not too much the case when we visited around 2:30 p this Sunday). Also a reasonably priced and large (for Brussels) brunch/breakfast menu (outside of the usual 20-25 euros menu, with limited choice, that seems to be the norm in Brussels) + quick lunch options.
