This newstand limits the number of copies of a newspaper you can buy. I went in to buy six copies of the Trib to give to relatives as the obituary for a loved one was in the Friday, Nov. 28 edition, a fact I mentioned to the clerk. He would only sell me three papers. In addition, rather than taking the opportunity to offer his condolences, he choose to utter a smart assed remark about not selling me the copies I needed by saying, "it's tough to be a newstand if we have no newspapers." The fact wouldn't sell me the copies I needed was inconvenient. His callous and smart ass attitude is what will keep me from supporting, what otherwise, would be a business I would normally love to support. read more

I remember growing up as a kid and you would see these places on street corners in Chicago but with the Internet and other stores these places have seemed to disappear. This location is amazing. Talk about the nicest Newsstand I have been in ever. It even had air conditioning. Which is a first for me because the new stands I am use to seeing are usually in a wooden shack located on the street corner. I was amazed to walk around this place and just see the variety of magazines that they offered. They had everything: Bridal, Cooking, Crossword Puzzles, Word Find Games, Fashion, Sports, Kitchens, Knitting, Quilting, Teeny Bopper Mags (I sound so hip writing it that way), Golf, Muscles, Music, Video Games, Comic Books, Skateboarding, Cars, Motorcycles, Military, Foreign Magazines, Sailing, Aviation and Adult Themed. I am sure that I missed about 100 more themes here but I figured I would give you the basics. My favorite was the magazines devoted to log cabins. Honestly there is a market for that? In the Chicago area? I also saw that they had newspapers from far away countries like Great Britain, Ireland, New York and Asia. I threw the New York in there to make sure you were still paying attention. Yes there will be a quiz later. This Newsstand was started in the 1940's and was recently remodeled in 2000. That is when the air conditioning came in...I think. This place is also near the Metra Train Station too. Personally reading print material and riding in a train go hand in hand. It just feels like a part of history and I love being a part of history. I was also impressed that this location had books too. The books were all themed towards the history of Chicago. It was one of the largest selections of historical Chicago based books I have seen, even larger then some of the major book stores. So if you are in the area and need something to read or if you are looking for a magazine that your local store does not carry...I would bet some money that they probably carry it in here. And if they do not have it, then I am sure that they could even special order it for you. I am guessing that because I thought the staff was really nice in here. There aren't that many places in the entire area to browse over the wide variety of periodicals (magazines and newspapers) as you'll find here. Some are hard-to-find imports from other cities and countries (mostly the U.K.). Also, no one will come by to tell you "it's not a library." If you need to pick up the latest New York Times, Financial Times, a periodical for appreciating craft brewing, or a magazine on tattoos and piercings, this is the place! Everything is well organized in 4 main aisles. Although the space is pretty compact, you could spent a hour or two here, if you aren't careful. To resist that temptation, you could just swing by to pick up the weekly freebies, like the Chicago Reader, New City, or Edible Chicago magazine. All of the freebies are in the front entry way, separated from the publications that are on sale inside the store proper. A comparable shop on the northwest side is City Newstand on Cicero Ave., near Irving Park Rd. and Milwaukee. I suspected the two shops were related, but so far can't say for sure. The neighborhoods of each shop are quite different, which could account for why the one in Chicago offers more of the X-rated magazines. This is much more of a transportation hub (stops for the CTA Purple Line, Metra Trains, Chicago Ave. buses, and the Northwestern campus bus are all close by). read more

I love temples to periodicals like Dick Cheney loves dropping the F bomb. If I can go into a building and have the opportunity to leave with any magazine from Arts in America to Wired, it makes my day. The Chicago-Main Newsstand is no exception. Whatever periodical you want, they have it. I've got one beef with the place, though: their staff. You'd expect teenagers and young adults to not want to serve you while on the job. But aging men? You'll get that here. Today, I was waiting in line to buy a copy of the New Yorker. After the customer in front of me left, the man at the register took new magazines by the register without a "I'll be back in a second" shot my way. I didn't wait for him to come back. This place is amazing. I came in here to find a NY paper, and they had it. They also have all of my railroad magazines, fashion mags, and general buy it just because mags. Be careful here though, because if you aren't you can drop a ton of money in a little time! For me thats fine cause I read as much as I can. LIke someone else said, come in for a paper, leave with enough to keep you going till next month. They also sell Ventra cards here. Chicago-Main Newsstand is the BEST store in the area for everything periodicals. You name it, they (should) have it. There are magazines that I didn't knew existed, and several I wish didn't. Who REALLY reads a magazine about pageantry and turkey hunting? It's easy to spend too much time here, even with no chairs or benches to sit on. Magazines fill each and every corner inside so there's no room anyway. It's a little hard to find a particular magazine sometimes because they're all so close together. No matter, the employees there can quickly show you the location. If you are into puzzles (crosswords, sudoku, logic), they have a variety of "booklets" to choose from. This newsstand was a North Shore institution for over 50 years when it closed down in the early 90s. It remained empty for about 8 years, during which it was an unappealing, graffiti-attracting, derelict pile of bricks. After a complete renovation, it reopened in 2001 with attractive features like a higher, natural wood ceiling and lots of natural light let in through newly installed glass. But most importantly, the magazine selection is world-class as is the friendly and knowledgeable customer service. If you like to read, there isn't a better place on the North Shore to spend an evening. read more

Newstands like this used to be everywhere; now they're rare enough that it's a must-stop whenever you're in the area. Their range of magazines both foreign and domestic is outstanding; they carry a lot of literary arts magazines you can't find many other places except via subscription; and they've got a decent little choice of comics, books, and newspapers as well. It's also heavy on local stuff, and the price is actually really good considering how much they have. It's even open late for your after-dinner and post-movie needs. I have no idea how they stay in business in the internet era, but I'm sure happy they do. read more

Who knew that there are no good newsstands in the city of Chicago?!?! As far as I can tell, this is the decent newsstand that is nearest to the heart of Chicago, and it's a bit of a trip to get there from downtown. It has a fine selection of news and topical magazines, international magazines, and other standard newsstand fare. It's not the best newsstand I've visited, but it's the best (okay, only decent) newsstand I've seen in the Chicago area. As for why the City of Chicago lacks newsstands, I understand there are several factors: there are zoning restrictions that force some of them to being outside, in small kiosks; newsstands apparently cannot sell lottery tickets (the revenue typically subsidizes their ability to have more floor space and, consequently, more space to stock magazines and newspapers), and then there's the fact that people in Chicago aren't much into reading. Who'd have guessed that? Wasn't Chicago a literary town at one time? Didn't the University of Chicago have a renowned English department at one time? What happened? Oh, people spend more time on Groupon than on reading... Drats. (Chicago used to be the home for Playboy, too, but apparently not enough people read it for the articles.) Anyway, you have to exit Chicago to get some decent periodicals. The place to go is the Chicago-Main Newsstand. read more

Had passed by by here dozens of times jetting up and down that section of Clark (Chicago St. in Evanston) always too much in a hurry to stop in. Finally had a minute yesterday and that minute turned into two relaxing hours and and finding some great new reads. I don't know of any other places like it in the area. They carry mostly all of the well-known magazines, magazines geared to various niche interests, and a good collection of foreign language publications. The shop is a nice peaceful place, and the staff is very knowledgeable about what is available. There are only two magazine newstands of note in Chicago (area) this is one of them, the owner also has the City Newsstand at 6 Corners, ie at Irving Park and Cicero and Milwaukee. Out of town newspapers, magazines, also some cool books and comics. If you cant find a magazine there, they will get it for you. read more

Chicago-Main Newsstand is an place to escape to when you are between books and looking for new ideas. Especially at the holidays this is a great place to get away from the typical mall scene with the horrible music, crowds, bell ringers, and other annoyances. The people working there are so nice, very competent and knowledgeable. They have a much better selection of magazines, quarterlies, and newspapers than the local B&N - And, you aren't pestered to get a membership card! I love this place.
