There is something about giving your hard-earned money to Amazon that is cold. Comic books are anything but cold. I walked into this shop and immediately knew I would be setting up my pull list here. Joe was super helpful and kind. The subscription service gives you a 20% off for all trades which is a great value, better than Amazon. I can't wait for Wednesday.

Mind where you walk and sit, many books are haphazardly piled in aisles and against shelves so you will have to move items, lamps etc in sections of the shop. Something to note: if you are sensitive to dust or mold or respiratory challenged, you may want to limit your visit. Old books, too many piles to clean around and strong incense equals poor air quality.

Some sections are alphabetized, some not (there is a color-coded guide to which are which). Books also are not priced; the owner uses Abebooks.com to look up the price online (but this led to the surprise of one trade paperback book I brought up being $50! I let that one go...) But if you want to spend hours browsing for new treasures, this is the kind of shop for you. Go in with an adventurous spirit and you will surely find something! Accessibility is rather challenging: aisles are narrow, and a good portion of the store is downstairs, where I had to shuffle sideways with my cane while also trying not to hit my head on the low ceiling. Even on the ground level, shelves stretch very high and books go to the floor. So you may need assistance reaching something.

I visited the store specifically because I used to work with one of the artists in a downtown office situation. While I enjoyed his display very much, I ended up buying a beautiful summer-light caped shirt produced by someone else -- don't tell him, please! I chatted with the owner, who sounds like an Englishman, and he was very pleasant and excited to tell me about the store. They'd only been open one week at the time of my visit. Just a good experience all around. I'm happy with my purchase -- which, by the way, did NOT put me into sticker shock! That was a big surprise, especially for such a unique article of clothing. I feel like I'm walking around in wearable art. Highly recommended for the selection of goods, the variety, pricing, and customer service. If I have any complaint, it's the road construction in the area, but that, of course, is out of the store's control. One thing you should know: the receipt has a note that says "Consignment items cannot be returned. All sales are final." This wasn't mentioned to me before the purchase, but I can't blame the owner for that. We were having such a pleasant chat, I'm sure he was distracted. Maya Papaya is primarily a clothing store, and let me tell you...it's cuuuuute and the owner is super sweet. I've been coming here for years, and though my kiddos are too old now for the clothes, they still have a small selection of gifty items, fun for all ages. From trivia card games to books, their section of toys is geared toward the younger crowd. The clothes are well-edited, and you'll find a fairly mid-to upper scale collection of both boys and girls clothing and onesies for infants with cute sayings like *Bundle of Oy*! And, they also carry adorable shoes. For the parent who wants to take a chill moment, they also have a nice seating area where you can take a break from the kiddie rat race. This store used to be down the street and around the corner. Their new location is much bigger and right on the corner. I've never had a problem getting rockstar street parking out front, but take note, there is a small step up for those with strollers. But, I'm sure Simone will be more than happy to hold the door :-)

Received a gift from this place, gift wrapped by this place, and tried to return it last weekend…read more The lady working said it could not be returned because there was no gift receipt. I asked if she could look up the items in her inventory to see what the price was so I could get credit and make an exchange. The items were all unused with original tags on them. Nope, still nonreturnable. So basically, a friend buys a gift, the store doesn't put a gift receipt in when they wrap it, and then they forbid you to return it. Also, the entire store smells like cat food.

In most used bookstores, it's usually a hunt to find something interesting. The shelves will be mostly filled with very common books or niche (or extremely niche) books of narrow interest (e.g., catalogues of small art museums from the 1970s). That's what people bring in to sell, and that's fair enough. Usually, I can find one or two interesting things, but sometimes nothing stands out. At a big store like the Strand in New York, there's enough volume that you can always find something, but small bookshops are harder. I've been to this shop twice and both times ended up finding 5 or 6 interesting things within ten minutes and then stopping in order to not go overboard. For me, they have a mix of books that I've heard of and was interested in but never got around to, books I didn't know about from writers I like, or books on topics that interest me but I'd never encountered before. My wife came with me last time, and she has different interests and tastes but also found several things she wanted, all of it at a good price. I don't know how they source and curate, but it's working. Check them out.

There's little signs that say "hi I made this!" and they're everywhere! Love love love that touch! Lena is chatty and joins in the conversation which I love-it makes you feel like everyone is welcome and included. While I was checking out, she told us the most exciting part= you can bring in any vessel and she will fill it with candle wax! Think of all the perfect vessels you have at your house RIGHT NOW!
