This store is a hidden gem for avid book & magazine readers. It is sandwiched in the middle of the block of the Six-Corners neighborhood , if you blink, you've missed it. So keep an eye out for it, as you drive. Today, was my first time at Six-Corners neighborhood in many, many years and I'm glad that I made the trip to it. This store is very well stocked with magazines and many types of magazines that you don't find at a Jewel-Osco magazine rack or check-out aisle. Being a film buff, I was glad to find "Cinema-Retro" magazine as well as several discounted hardcover books. Today, I spent $134 here on magazines & books and I had a good time doing it. I was able to browse without interruption until I found the items that I wanted to purchase. The check-out clerk was very helpful and polite, the place was very clean, very well lit and the magazine racks were very well organized. There's also a small coffee shop in the store. I'm a big magazine nerd and this really satisfied my hunger for all things mags! The cherry on top was the cafe at the front and the chocolate I popped in my pocket because you get one with every purchase. The nice barista told me about their rewards program too, so I signed up! There was an event happening that prevented me from sitting down and enjoying my cup near the front, but I did leave with several mags. Prices and variety of mags was good and I hope they get more into indies beyond just European mags. Can't wait to take the bus over here again and again! read more

Stopped by earlier today because I've always wanted to try their cafe. They have a large selection of drinks and everything is very reasonably priced. I tried out the lemonade with rose syrup and it was so good. The woman working there was so sweet and kind and gave me the drink on the house and let me try their dark chocolate truffles. As many newspapers and magazines have gone digital, why is a place like this still in business? Well, behind the closed doors, if you have an addiction involved with some kind of "graphics,"you will start pulling your wallet out of your packet. Well, make sure that you're "just getting" the wallet out of pocket. After such motion is completed, please don't let your hand linger around your "pants area." I don't know if you Yelpers understand any of that in the first paragraph. I purposefully refrain to delve in detail, but I know the "adult-only" section constitutes the majority of their sales on this "newsstand." Well, I briefly peeked around "that" area and was quickly restrained by hubby behind me. Anyways, that wasn't in my interest at all. As a libertarian, you have the right to pursue your own happiness, even if your happiness entails some women's body parts. I guess that's alright with me. I was fond of the runway fashion magazine section. The prices were somewhat steep, around $60 to $70 per copy. I told hubby to pick up one of these for my birthday coming up in September. There were many atypical books that you wouldn't be able to find at a Bo*k-A-mil*ion or a Bar*es & No*le. I found many potential purchases, yet we decided to hold off and not to use the $5 credit from the groupon I purchased recently. I've always passed by this cute place, and I never thought I'd go in. One day, my partner and I decided to walk through the neighborhood, and so we stopped by! It's like a hidden little gem, filled with calmness. I was so surprised by the variety of books/magazines. It is a bookstore gem in there!! The staff welcomes you right away, and the coffee was phenomenal. I had a mocha, and I will definitely be getting again. My partner got an iced matcha, and we loved it too! I've got to hand it to this place -they really have cleaned up, reorganized / remodeled it and made it the "go to" place to find unique magazines. I love the newer (last two years or so..?) cafe that attracts a nice neighborhood crowd -it adds a nice vibe to the place. I get a lot of magazines directly to my home via subscription, but I was looking for some particular teen music ones for my nieces for Xmas. I planned to gift them the magazine and then put a note that I bought them a subscription. These are harder to find in, say, a Jewel or Walgreens. But, I found them here! (Alternative Press and Karrang! both music magazines for the more rock / emo bands.) Great place -super excited to find some cool stuff that I suspect will make a nice Xmas gift (or at least I hope!). read more

Doing it right All the magazines, a cafe, and internet. There's a few tables up front. Today I walked in and a woman was playing guitar. I thought it might be hard to get work done, this is when I noticed more seating in back. It's relaxed and quiet enough and I can get work done here. The people are nice, the coffee is good. A neighborhood treasure. City Newsstand is the only place for miles around - or as far as I know, within the city - where in one visit I can pick up fancy British music magazines (you know, the ones that come with mix CDs), higher-brow political journals, and B-movie mags. While I'm sure that some of the magazines are available at Borders, City Newsstand carries a greater number of esoteric and foreign publications than any chain. Plus, it's nice to spend local. Uh. One little gripe though - The gay porn magazines are way too close to the political science section. Every time I go looking for an issue of Harpers I end up getting an eyeful of "Hung Studs" and the like. What gives? Put the gay stuff over near the bodybuilding magazines, where it belongs. read more

I have been shopping with them for over 14 years. I would play hooky from Portage Park day camp as a kid to go there and read magazines because at times camp would get boring and back then they sold Garfield comic books. This is the place to come to find magazines you wouldn't ever dream up- if it's hard to find and this place doesn't have it, nobody will. Know that while it's called "City Newsstand," it's not a stand- it's a store, with a front door, racks for the magazines and everything. The porn section's pretty big, and mixed right into the shop, so if you make a lap around to browse all the magazines expect to rub elbows with the pervs who apparently lack internet access hanging out in the back. read more

The magazine selection is insanely good, and IMO this is a neighborhood gem store that's often overlooked by those who hadn't heard of it, or don't make it out to Portage Park often and might've missed it while passing through the area. Just about every obscure magazine or newspaper you're trying to find, including even some foreign language ones, are stocked here. Like others said, they have a sister store in Evanston, on the corner of Main/Chicago. Though that one has somewhat less selection, vs. this location. The porn thing doesn't bother me(in the middle of non-porn magazines) since I ignore that, but I see how it could bother others. Keep that in mind, if say you know someone who might be offended by that, and it's their first time here. I'll have to revisit, and see how the cafe addition to City Newstand is going. Gosh, reading that in a newer review reminds me how many years it's unfortunately been, since my last visit here. read more

This is an excellent little tucked away neighborhood newstand. It's located in a small store front on Cicero near Irving Park/Milwaukee and you almost miss it because on either side are large empty stores sadly.... but once you walk in you are in magazine heaven. They have every magazine you could think of, even newspapers and magazines in different languages. Must warn though the "adult magazines" aren't in a special section or tastefully covered up like at chain stores.... so might want to keep an eye on little Johnny if you don't want him picking up his first issue of Playboy too soon. read more

I love this place. Have been here a couple times now and it's such a unique place to have in the neighborhood. What's so special about a newstand? Well I believe they have just about anything and everything and more than your run of the mill Barnes & Noble section. Like antiquing...there is a magazine for you. Music fans....there are loads of mags for you. My husband bought a rare music magazine as a Christmas gift! Not only that they have this cute little cafe in the front of the store with the sweetest lady that runs it. If you are not looking for fast coffee and a place to chill this is the best spot. The coffee is pretty good and the lady at the counter will talk about how they make their own truffles and even give you some to sample. The first time my hubby and I went there they had NY bagels that she said would go great with their coffee. I believe we just bought coffee and we got the bagels for free. Now that the weather is nicer I'm sure my husband and I will be spending some of lazy Sundays perusing the stacks and enjoying our coffee. read more

Great selection of magazines; I've found just about everything I've been looking for here, including magazines you can't usually find at a Barnes and Noble or... well, I guess Borders doesn't exist anymore. The also sell the Daily Racing Form, which is a rarity, unfortunately. Do mind your step, however. The entire back of the magazine is nudie magazines, and they aren't separated by a tasteful curtain or velvet rope, either, so it's pretty easy to come in, walk back and BOOM: porno. I'm a big boy and can handle it but maybe you or, more likely, the little tyke you're bringing along for his Sports Illustrated for Kids can't. Since this doesn't effect my use of the place one iota I won't dock them a star for that, but your experiences might dictate otherwise. read more

Recently remodeled, this shop now includes a coffee bar that features coffee from Uncommon Grounds Saugatuck, which is our favorite coffee in the universe. We have bags shipped to us every couple of months so we're not fooling here. They even feature an exclusive "City News" blend, which is delicious. The selection of magazines is extraordinary. I spotted magazines covering just about every subject conceivable. If you provide firefighters with equipment, there's a trade magazine available here for you. Beekeeper? This place features an extensive selection of magazines, newspapers, and books, sometimes in different languages. They proudly brew Uncommon coffee. The place is quaint, ceramic mugs are provided for people who drink in, and the selection of coffees and flavors is extensive and quite delicious. They also make their own truffle, which are absolutely tasty! The lady that served us was modest and kind. The hours are also very nice, 7am to 11pm, 7 days a week. I will be back, and I recommend this place to anyone who wants to grab a morning cup of coffee, study, or escape the busy life in Portage Park for a little while. read more

City Newsstand always stocked porno mags. It's a moneymaker, I know. But on a recent visit, I was surprised at just how much (paper and digital) porn the store had for sale. Boobs and butts and sticker covered nether regions seemed to be everywhere. I know it's hard to be connected to print media these days, but I didn't know it was this hard, heh heh. As I checked out, the salesman noticed the ring on my finger and remarked that engaged women spend a lot of time in the Wedding section. He was surprised I didn't follow their lead. I wished I told him that I couldn't find it in the middle of all that porn. I want to patronize this store more often, but the porn factor isn't going to make that happen. They just created a coffee shop, which the coffee is FANTASTIC. Unfortunately, the service is sub-par. I went the first time, and there was one man working both counters, which clogged up the line. The second time a very unpleasant young man working the coffee bar did not even acknowledge my existence and went on talking to a man who he knew who had just ordered coffee. Now, they have a cafe so you can relax with coffee and a sweet roll and read to your heart's content. I am so glad to see this addition and will make it my new every- Saturday destination. They must be doing something right, staying in the same location, and being successful for almost 2 decades counts for something. Especially in this area, where businesses come and go before you get a chance to realize they were ever here. I met Mike today, he's one of the workers here, he told me that the owner used to have an independently standing newsstand on the corner of Irving Park and Milwaukee for years before moving to the present spot. I actually remember when I was a teenager exactly where this tiny stand was. City Newsstand is in the same building as the City News Cafe, and has the same owner. They have a crazy selection of magazines of every kind. Seriously, if they don't have it you don't need it. Lol. They sell books too, some of them very unusual ones that you won't find at your regular bookstore, which can make for a great gift. Towards the back of the store they have the "adults only" section. You will also see some very cool art hanging on the walls. It you're an avid reader like myself it's very easy to lose yourself in here for hours, so be careful. Amazing people work here, plus they sell really good coffee on the Cafe side. The small patio outside is a great place for people watching, or just sitting with a cup of good coffee, or whatever your drink of choice might be. Love, love, love this place. I have had the opportunity to frequent the City Newsstand for several years and it really is a magical place. Not only does it have magazines for every topic imaginable (Crocheting? Sure! Auto? Why not? Just a magazine about cute animals? Take your pick!), the Newsstand is also a rich source for books about Chicago's history. The location also has a café that serves as a hub for the local community. The Newsstand frequently invites local music artists to play so you can have a nice tune while you enjoy their cappuccino and homemade truffles. Additionally, the Newsstand takes care to advertise fun local community events on their boards. I hope to spend my Saturday's in the café reading the newspaper (who am I kidding...the comics section) for many years to come. read more

This is one of those unique kinds of places in the city that you only find by accident or if someone tells you about it... so I'm telling you about it! City Newsstand is probably the biggest storefront magazine shop you will ever find. They have two locations, Evanston and a Chicago location just north of Irving on Cicero. The Chicago location is kind of mind blowing. This is one of those places that people with ADD shouldn't go unless they want to be sucked in. I say this because it holds 60 Newspapers and 6,000 different Magazines. The place is always renewing and or changing/ adding to the already vast selection on display. They have so many different rare magazines foreign and domestic that you won't find anywhere else. A friend of mine back in the day wrote for La Coda, a French magazine which I never thought that I would be able to find until I stumbled upon City Newsstand. Though I could only make out a word or three, lucky for me I had another friend read it to me. The staff has always been extremely friendly and will help you through the overload of the visual senses to find what you need. So if you're going on a long flight or just appreciate a good article this is the place for you! read more

The other day I wandered into City News for the first time since I was a teenager, aside from Sears it is one of the only stores that seems to have survived from the era when the Six Corners area of Portage Park was a lively, bustling shopping & dining district. A visit to the City Newsstand is one of my favorite treats. The selection of magazines is unparalleled in Chicago. I gravitate towards the expensive art and photography periodicals, the food and travel ones, and political commentary. When I was a kid my aunt would take me to the book store and tell me I could have anything I wanted: I get in this frame of mind when I visit the City Newsstand. This past Sunday I was paying for my stack of reading material and the owner spontaneously told me this great story of a pre-9/11 all-expense-paid trip, on CBS' dime, for he and his wife to be in the audience for the Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman used to bring his show to other cities, until he realized it was cheaper to bring other cities to New York. The main guest was Jerry Springer, and the musical guest was Al Green. read more
