We are avid gardeners and are blessed to have a wide selection back home. Pickings here seemed slim. We asked around for a nursery to meet our needs and Gethsemane was the one nursery that my daughter's friends recommended. WOW - especially considering that it's a "city" garden center, AND it's the fall which is hardly high landscaping season. You had an extremely wide selection that was conveniently arranged to make the best use of our time. Prices to me are fair considering the quality of the plants and service. We visited on Friday to do recognizance and make a preliminary stack of possibles as we're only in town for a few days. We had spent two days demolishing the mangled sad mess left by the previous owners and were ready to get to work. On Saturday morning we took our daughter to review our choices, and she threw us a few curve balls, but the staff was prepared. We worked with Jennifer and Richie in trees and shrubs who allowed us to quickly eliminate things that would not work in their very shaded yard. Miriam in perennials was particularly helpful in that my daughter has some very specific likes and dislikes (Those ALL look like WEEDS to me says she!!) Miriam was patient and kind in helping sort through all of the available Hostas to color coordinate several varieties. Advice on mulch and watering were administered at check out and our precious green matter was delivered at the agreed upon time a few hours later. We dug, we sorted rock, we cut old roots that we only found when we dug and after about 6 hours it was done and we couldn't be more pleased. You were all very helpful and provided exactly the service in the compressed timeframe that was required. The Yews, Hostas, Azaleas and Lavendar all appear to be very healthy and we can't wait to watch them grow. Thank you for your service today.

I think a nursery should have every and single plant look like they're well taken care of and happy. Most plants inside didn't look like that. It's pretty sad. They do have a good sized field house here, with programming for a variety of age ranges, so it's worth checking out the CPD activities schedule. There's lots of green space, but also baseball fields, tennis courts, and a nice sized playground. The playground, too, serves a nice range of ages. But what I liked most about this park was the greenhouse and outdoor natural play area. There are places for kids to sit for various activities that take place here, an outdoor kitchen, and a large greenhouse. It's called a "teaching greenhouse", and is unique amongst Chicago parks (at least as of 2026). There's a program called garden buddies aimed at toddlers and I wish I lived closer to be able to have my child participate in it! There's also a plant sale each year. If all that weren't enough, an orchard--the first in a major metropolitan city in the US!--was planted in 2008. Apples, pears, and more--including the paw paw, an unusual, native Illinois fruit--grow on these trees. Currants, berries, and more have also been planted here. I'm excited to keep an eye on their events.

Given the late last frost date here, I would just wait to buy outdoor plants in the spring. The parking lot is extensive, and they have several community events as well as opportunities to host birthday parties for any age. Staff were really helpful and efficient at the register.

I was sad that we didn't happen upon the turtle, though, because I know my daughter would have been thrilled if we'd bumped into him. They have a go fund me or kickstarter or something because I guess their lease is not renewed (wonder what that means for this strip mall from a bygone era), so I'm not sure what the future of the Jungle of Niles is.
