Let's landscape the kids' townhouse she said, it will be FUN she said, he said....ookkay I guess so! We come from a lush suburb, far away to visit our daughter and her family. We are avid gardeners and are blessed to have a wide selection back home. Pickings here seemed slim. We asked around for a nursery to meet our needs and Gethsemane was the one nursery that my daughter's friends recommended. WOW - especially considering that it's a "city" garden center, AND it's the fall which is hardly high landscaping season. You had an extremely wide selection that was conveniently arranged to make the best use of our time. Prices to me are fair considering the quality of the plants and service. We visited on Friday to do recognizance and make a preliminary stack of possibles as we're only in town for a few days. We had spent two days demolishing the mangled sad mess left by the previous owners and were ready to get to work. On Saturday morning we took our daughter to review our choices, and she threw us a few curve balls, but the staff was prepared. We worked with Jennifer and Richie in trees and shrubs who allowed us to quickly eliminate things that would not work in their very shaded yard. Miriam in perennials was particularly helpful in that my daughter has some very specific likes and dislikes (Those ALL look like WEEDS to me says she!!) Miriam was patient and kind in helping sort through all of the available Hostas to color coordinate several varieties. Advice on mulch and watering were administered at check out and our precious green matter was delivered at the agreed upon time a few hours later. We dug, we sorted rock, we cut old roots that we only found when we dug and after about 6 hours it was done and we couldn't be more pleased. You were all very helpful and provided exactly the service in the compressed timeframe that was required. The Yews, Hostas, Azaleas and Lavendar all appear to be very healthy and we can't wait to watch them grow. Thank you for your service today. read more

For the last 20 years I have enjoyed every visit to Gethsemene Gardens. Everyone is so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable; especially Fran in trees and shrubs and Stan, the delivery man! Once, Stan, made a delivery and forgot some plants, so he drove right back to Gethsemene Gardens and redelivered the plants within 45 minutes. GREAT service all around! read more

Fantastic garden center. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Especially the staff in the herb section. They helped me pick out the right sized container for my tomato plant as well as herbs to place along with it to help keep out pests. The also have a great selection of indoor plant collection and planters. One less star because I feel like they have outgrown their space. You have to pay for your plants before moving from one section to another ( say herbs and the shrubs). The parking is really tricky on weekends and you have to be super careful when turning into the lot because you cross a bike lane. The only time it was manageable was when I visited on a 100 degree day. read more

I have been buying plants from this garden place since they were small business 15-20 years ago. They have the best annuals and perennials since I came to know they have their own grower in Michigan. They also have some novelty plants for gifting properly planted in an awesome style. Most of my heavy planters are still with me 15 years ago which shows quality product. They maintain their sept./oct. sale for planters and Christmas decor. Their staff are always helpful and respectful. They respect the community so they device their ways to maintain traffic flows on weekends. read more

High quality xmas trees out of both MI and NC. They are fresh, and offer different varieties of firs and pines to choose from. One of the better inventories you will find, plenty to choose from to fill your holiday need. They do not frock, or string lights, which is a bummer, but that is about the only negative. As with everything these days, prices have increased. The customer service is above and beyond and the tree quality is good. In addition to that, they are full service, meaning, you pick, they move, bag, net and reserve. If you wish, you can continue shopping at your leisure. They have a lovely shop attached that has extremely enticing gifts, books, ornaments, plants, etc. You are bound to find something if not several things that lift your holiday spirit. We somehow never manage to leave empty handed each year. Andersonville is a lovely way to spend the day in general, but Gethsemane can really be a highlight around the holidays and they have their own parking lot. I have even encountered carolers inside the shop one year! When you are ready to pick up your tree and depart, simply show your tree tag to the attendant, and they will load your tree on top of your car, tie it down, and away you go. Absolutely loved my visit! Wild Pansy has now become my go-to destination for all things unique, beautiful, and nature-inspired. The garden and greenhouse is overflowing with greenery, gorgeous flowers, and beautiful terracotta pots, while the gift shop bursting with charming trinkets, home decor, jewelry, and many hand crafted items. I loved to see so many odes to Chicago, and even a section of planters made by a local Chicago artist. Wandering through here is the perfect slow-paced weekend activity. They even had a free gardening class happening! I love that it is so much more than a flower shop, there is a strong sense of community. Knowledgeable staff was scattered throughout the large space and was happy to assist and answer any questions. I went home with a new plant, an adorable baby blanket, and a gift for a friend. Great variety of plants and they're well organized. They have typess I used to need to travel to the far north burbs or even Kenosha to find -- moon flower, oxalis, evolvulus, toronia, nastertium. The staff is always friendly and hustles to help. They've got managing their small parking lot down to a science. Caveats: Do not visit for the first time during peak hours in peak planting season. They have both indoor, outdoor, and (in the spring) sidewalk inventory that spans several blocks; it can feel labyrinthian if you're not familiar with it. If you want to park in the lot on a prime planting weekend, go early. I had a 5ish minute wait behind 3 cars around 9:30 a.m. on a May Saturday; by the time I was leaving maybe just 20 minutes later, the line of cars had tripled. Might also want to check for street festival closures which can make side-street parking impossible to find. Don't try the lot on a busy weekend if you're not familiar with how to best approach it -- the line usually backs up down the block. read more

I returned with two hydrangeas I had purchased just two days earlier, having decided to take my garden in a different direction. I brought them, with my receipt, back to the Tree & Shrub area. As I set them down, an employee asked if I was buying them. I began to explain I was hoping to return them, but he cut me off with a sharp "No, no, no," grabbed the containers, and walked them out while saying there were "signs everywhere" about the return policy. I followed, thinking he was bringing me to someone else, but instead, he dropped the plants at the edge of the parking lot and told me they couldn't be accepted. When I mentioned I wasn't aware of the policy, he repeated his point about the signs and said it was due to disease prevention. In my shock, I mentioned the original cashier hadn't said anything about it being final sale to which he responded by pointing to the fine print on my receipt. To be clear, the issue isn't the return policy itself -- I understand and respect that. It's the way I was abruptly shut down and made to feel like I had done something wrong just for asking. After years of shopping here, I left feeling dismissed, embarrassed and unwelcome. This experience changed how I view Gethsemane and I will no longer support this business. read more

I will no longer be going anywhere else for my plants. I had wanted a plumeria desperately since I moved here from California and was not able to find one for a reasonable price prior to finding Gethsemane. When I originally came and inquired about the plumeria in May they said they didn't have one but would call me when they did-I thought there is no way. But 9weeks later they sure did call me and set aside the most beautiful plumeria with my color request for me. I've purchased other plants since then and not only are they fairly priced but they are healthy! I feel like often times some plants that are sold have a fungus or bug issue. I've had no such thing with my Gethsemane plants. 10/10 recommend read more

Needed some new trees for my house. Decided to come here instead of Home Depot....which would've been a disaster. Visions of transporting trees with dirt all over the car. Went in around noon. Tree department made recommendations on what would work in the space. Less than an hour later workers brought the trees to the house & planted them. They also have a warranty included. Easy peasy! Completely child unfriendly. 3 employees standing behind the counter talking to each other doing nothing one starts lecturing me how my 2 year old can't be near a cart. So unhelpful and staff are unfriendly towards children and do nothing to help parents purchase plants. Strongly advise not going to this store. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and there were many shoppers there who were looking for very specific and unusual plants--it was honestly fun listening to their excited conversations about the different varieties of plants and how they cared for them! Came by in the morning/early afternoon on a Sunday to pick up 2 plants for my boyfriend's roof deck. We really loved our experience here! Upon arriving, we asked an employee for assistance and explained what we wanted. She was very helpful and asked good follow up questions to help pinpoint what we wanted. Without her suggestions we never would have found the plants we got! The purple bush is a Winecraft Black Smokebush and the tree is a Golden Emerald Arborvitae. I love how unique the color of the green tree is. They also helped us with which soil to get. For COVID times, the employees maintained 6ft of distance, wore masks, and had paths going in one direction to reduce traffic. Overall our experience was quick and easy! Update: Gethsemane staff did reach out to me to help rectify this situation. ******************************************************* As a decades long customer of Gethsemane Garden Center (spending between $500 - $1000 each season), I'm sad to report the quality of the plants sold there have noticeably declined. I never minded paying a premium price when Gethsemane offered higher quality; however, this year 3-4 of the perennials I there purchased died within a month or so. Case in point: see the photo. I purchased two of these perennials based on the recommendation of a Gethsemane employee. Planted side by side, one is doing just fine, the other is dead. Same light, same soil, some amount of water. I have to think it was the plant itself. When I was at Gethsemane earlier today, I mentioned this to the perennial staff member (just happened to be the same woman who initially recommended these plants.) Of course, she said it was likely the soil, the light, watering ... and at least inferred it was my gardening skills. I suggested the evidence pointed to a different conclusion, but the employee definitely would not consider providing a replacement. "Our policy." read more

Gethsemane is the garden shop less than a mile from my home, but I've only been here once or twice. I'd wanted a Christmas tree this year (2021) help make it feel festive, and I am not about a fake tree. I'd about given up on it (no desire to drag it upstairs and unsure whether I could get it home) when I realized that Gethsemane offers a tree delivery service. So the week before Thanksgiving, I popped over to see what they had in the way of trees. I wanted a small(ish) tree--one that would fit on an end table. And I don't like Fraser fir, if I can avoid it. After wandering for 10 minutes or so I found a tree that seemed like it could be perfect, but didn't want to make my decision to hastily, so I had my partner babysit the tree whilst I wandered around looking at some others to make sure I'd picked out the perfect tree for me. (I did!) I also really appreciated that they wore masks even though it was outdoors. Way to model good behavior, and protect your employees; I'm ultra cautious too so I get it. After I'd determined that was the tree I wanted, I wandered around a bit more to look at trimmings and whatnot. There is the Wild Tulip gift shop here, as well, and I found some blown-glass ornaments that were really beautiful (I got two of the small ones). They also had some gorgeous Christmas tree toppers, glass and intricately decorated, but I couldn't bring myself to buy one because they were really expensive... maybe next year? I'd wanted to buy some Christmas lights, since I didn't know if I had any at home (it's been probably at least 5 years since I decorated a tree). Unfortunately, the folks here weren't really much help in that department. I wanted to see how a particular type of light blinked, and they only had the LED lights up--not the incandescents that I was interested in. That seems like a misstep for Gethsemane, to not have these on display. Scheduling delivery for the tree was easy. Luckily they had availability that weekend which is exactly when I wanted it (I was worried I'd been to late!). The guys who delivered it were in and out within 10-15 minutes, and they kept me appraised of where they were (I got a couple texts letting me know when they anticipated being there, and then one telling me I was their next stop). I'd definitely use them again for Christmas tree delivery. They also offer another service I haven't seen elsewhere, but that I really appreciate: If you buy a pot from them, they will drill a drainage hole into the pot. (Don't try to bring a pot you bought somewhere else here and ask them to do it!) Most plant pots are cachepots, meaning they don't have a drainage hole, which is really freaking annoying. And usually when I do find pots that I like, they're far too small for a plant to stay in for very long. I'm not sure how the price of their pots compares to other places, but the option to have a hole added definitely adds value and could be worth it, so I will definitely stroll through here sometime to take a look at their extensive inventory of pots in hopes of taking advantage of that service. However, I'll continue buying my indoor plants from one of the smaller plant shops around town that focus on houseplants as opposed to everything gardening so I can support other small businesses, too. I don't know if they are paid or provide it as a community service, but Gethsemane is responsible for the landscaping around the Andersonville sign that's right across the street from them, so it always looks top-notch. They also have a dedicated parking lot, a major plus in Andersonville, as well as some on-street parking in front of the shop. If you're in the area, and in need of what they have, definitely worth checking them out. read more

Their trees have always been overpriced, but they have a great selection of trees and everything in their Christmas shop is beautiful. So, Gethsemane was part of our holiday tradition. First off, I can't imagine any place in the city smells as good as Gethsemane! It's fresh and fragrant and heavenly. Secondly, they've got a great selection of plants, trees, pots, stands, window boxes, garden statuary, etc. Thirdly, and most importantly, they have a helpful staff! I haven't planted anything in close to 3 decades, but since buying a place last year I wanted to invest in my outdoor space. They helped me choose boxes and brackets, and while the boxes I really liked were a little too pricey, they absolutely had a selection in my price range. They also helped me figure out how many plants I could do in one box as well as how some of them would last through June, some all summer, and still others would stop blooming when the temp was too high but would continue once the weather cooled again. All in all, I'm super happy with the outcome and to have supported a local small business. read more

Quality of product not as good this year. I feel I was overcharged by the pricing ! All done by hand no scanning. It's been a few weeks and the tomato's alone are average.
