This is one of my spring must-visits as a veggie gardener! The labyrinth of greenhouses boasts countless varieties of vegetables and flowers. The prices are very reasonable, although I've found that the seedlings are sometimes not as mature as other nurseries. The parking situation is along the road, and there's a crazed energy when everyone is navigating the narrow aisles with giant carts of plants. This has always been my go to spot for flowers and herbs. About May 12th I bought about $100 in plants. I spoke to the cashier about how "rough" some of them looked after the cold snaps and she assured me they were healthy. But about half of them were not. I stopped here once on a whim when I drove by and saw the sign. I was hoping that there would be a bunch of houseplants like other garden centers have, but this one was definitely focused on outdoor gardening. That said, their selection was impressive. I can't speak to the pricing, because I don't do much gardening on my balcony so I'm not sure what good prices are for various flowers and herbs and plants, but it didn't seem outrageous. This place is legit and has every kind of vegetable you can imagine. The prices are great as is the service. All seedlings are well attended and in great condition - translation: healthy and hearty. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and polite. I was searching for a hard-to-find scotch bonnet pepper seedling and they had rows of hearty plants. What a hidden gem of a nursery! They have a large section of veggies, herbs, berries, flowers, and perennials seedlings! Spending an hour here is a gardener's dream! There are multiple greenhouses full of different kinds of plants with multiple varieties of each plant. One full greenhouse for tomatoes alone! The seedlings all look very healthy. They even have some asian veggies like luffa and bitter melon! Love this place and will be coming back at the start of next gardening's season! read more

It can get pretty busy, parking gets tricky, but on a very busy day one guy rang me up on one register, while simultaneously serving another customer who was counting her cash at another register, and politely answering a plant question of a third customer who was a little short with him. My family loves going to Meinke's every year in prep for the summer planting season. They have at least 20 separate greenhouses holding various types of annuals, perennials, fruits, herbs, and vegetables. I especially like their rainbow selection of hanging flower baskets, heirloom tomatoes, herbs, and lavender. In the winter they sell firewood, wreaths, and Christmas trees. Their pricing is decent and from my recollection, an entire flat of annuals can run about $20ish. Mom and I like to make an afternoon out of it and we usually spend at least an hour going through all their stock. It truly is a green thumb's paradise and worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

As a garden center, Meinke is impressive for also being reasonably close to the city. It's shoved into a very irregularly shaped lot, but the broader sections are organized pretty well. There's even a public bathroom (of sorts). The thing is, within each section, I could not tell in the least what was where. I don't remember if the plants were alphabetized, but I definitely know that there wasn't any separation between the varieties. This was true both outside and in the greenhouses. I think I even wandered through a greenhouse that was purely for propagation. I have no idea; there weren't any signs anywhere! Also, I don't recall seeing any summary plates above the plants, at all. Like yeah, I know echinacea is a full sun plant, typically 2-3' tall, is drought-tolerant but otherwise likes moisture, but... that's the kind of thing I want to see at eye- or chest-level, not having to bend down and read every tag. As a result it's really, really difficult to find something specific. You can ask around (there's a lot of helpers) but things are just kind of haphazard overall. The plants that are sold do seem really healthy, so it's nice that they give you the best chance at establishing your garden. read more

The best place to buy plants in Chicagoland, as far as I am concerned! I used to have a client in Morton Grove, which is how I stumbled upon Meinke Garden Center. They have the most extensive collection of tomato seedlings/plants, including heirlooms, that I have even seen. So many different varieties, and they grow them all from seed, right on the premises. They are a family owned business, that has been growing on this very site for a long, long time. The quality of the plants is outstanding. Not only do I go there for tomatoes and basil plants, but I alway purchase the flowers for my flower boxes from them as well. I no longer do business in the area, but will drive there every spring just because I have never found another garden center that is even close in quality. Don't believe me? My first time here. Went with my 5 yr old today. Wanted to buy some bush green bean plants and my daughter found a "purple plant" she loved. Reviews were complaining about difficulty finding things bc they were unlabelled? Every single plant was labelled. I was in and out in 10 mins. Found my bush green bean plants no problem. I'm not sure if the lack of growth is my fault or the plant but my two tomato plants look very different than anybody else's tomato plants this year. When I read about how to grow them I read a 5 pound bucket is the way to go if you have to grow in a tub rather than the ground. My two plants both look the same, super skinny and haven't produced many cherry tomatoes. Bummer:( read more

They fit a staggering variety of vegetables, fruits, shrubs annuals and perennials into a busy suburb spot. Everything I've gotten from them has thrived beautifully. This is our favorite place to buy vegetable seedlings and flower seedlings. The hanging baskets always look great too. So many varieties of any plant imaginable. Every time we buy seedlings here, we get pounds and pounds of eggplant, tomatoes, bell peppers, and strawberries from our garden a few months later. They also sell soil, mulch, fire wood, tomato cages, and cute garden decor. No guarantees on their plants, just follow the directions on the little tag in each plant and you should be fine. Bring comfortable walking shoes so you can explore everything. Be prepared to park far, especially if you go on Mother's Day weekend. read more

This place is a hidden gem! They have wide varieties or outdoor plants and shrubs and the prices are very reasonable and the quality great. The indoor plant selection is not the greatest but if you can find something you're looking for, it'll be at a good deal. Found an almost 3 gallon fig tree for $25 and it looks super healthy and some of them already had figs growing. Can't wait till it grows bigger and bear more fruit. They also have a great selection of terra-cotta pots of all different sizes. I can't believe I have lived so close by and never stopped in until last week. I already went there three times this week! In the late summer they start stacking wood so high it is like they are making a huge wall. :) they are super knowledgeable and helpful. parking is available but can be tricky if you go at peak times would recommend for nice plants. read more
