While gathering my travel documents, I discovered my passport had expired a few months earlier. Cue the rising panic! Thankfully, living in Indianapolis meant I wasn't completely without options. After a little persistence (and a few rounds battling the automated phone system), I was able to secure an emergency appointment at the Chicago Passport Agency for the next morning. From the very first phone call with the gentleman who scheduled my appointment to the follow-up email and text reminders making sure I had the right documentation ready, the process was surprisingly organized. Once I arrived, the experience continued to impress. The check-in line moved quickly, the security staff were friendly and professional, and the agent who helped me at the window was efficient, kind, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. Government jobs can often be pretty thankless--especially when you're dealing with stressed travelers who are only there because they waited too long (guilty as charged). So the fact that every person I encountered was patient, helpful, and completely on their A-game was genuinely impressive. I certainly don't plan on needing their services again anytime soon, but if you ever find yourself in a passport panic, just show up with the documents they tell you to bring and they'll take care of the rest. Let me start by saying that I'm not one to leave reviews..... ever. And if there was something more that I could do beyond leave a review, I would. The CPA, despite the high stress, long wait environment, is run extremely well and efficiently. The team there couldn't have been nicer, more helpful, and certainly driven. They made what is normally an excruciating process feel tolerable, and their positive energy and enthusiasm was contagious. Tina - who from my perspective oversees the floor - is literally a guardian angel. Or at least my guardian angel. She was able to ensure that I was able to quickly and efficiently get through the renewal process with enough time to catch a critical flight (I was in an emergency-like situation). She was also super helpful to the others in line and made sure that everyone on the team was pushing to get people through the process, and to do so respectfully. It's not an instant process by any means but if you need an expedited passport and make an appointment in advance, the staff is very clear and precise. From security to checkin and processing, they run a tight shop. Don't expect to be in and out. I had a 10:30 AM appointment. Arrive 1 hour early and got through the processing. Everything was great! The facility was very organized from the security at the entrance to the representative at the window. I understand it gets busy, but the process was smooth and efficient. I was there with my elderly mother for urgent travel, and we were in and out in less than 1.5 hours. When I returned later to pick up the passport, it took less than 10 minutes. You often hear that government employees can have an attitude, but thankfully, that wasn't the case here. Complete lack of communication. I was told I could pick up my passport between 2 and 5pm on Wednesday or Thursday. I showed up at 4 pm on Thursday and was told to come back at 8 am the next day. Pretty sure when I come at 8 am tomorrow they will tell me to come back between 2 pm and 5 pm. Total waste of time. read more

My passport expired during covid and a very short notice trip to Quebec City fell into my lap. With plane tickets already purchased, I really didn't have time for any screwups. For urgent passport needs, you must have proof of an upcoming trip within 14 days in order to qualify. The plane tickets must be purchased and you have to show proof. You must make an appt. They do not accept walk-ins. The staff here actually look like they're having a great time. They're friendly and engaging. Security at the door was teasing me as soon as I walked in. Then the guy at the metal detector made me give him a high five before I collected my stuff. I came back a few days later to collect my passport and I wasn't in there for more than 10 min tops. This is a wonderful agency. This is always an emotionally charged process, but they were clear, kind, and efficient. I realized last minute my passport didn't fit the 3month validity rule for travel and needed a new passport by the next morning. I had little hope but was able to make an early morning appointment time, I got there around 7:30 and waited with the crowd. They got me in around 7:45 and I was at the window getting help by 7:55! They were clear and helpful the whole time. They heard my circumstances and reassured me they would get me on my way. I got my new passport by 10:55. It is a must to do all the paperwork online, have it printed, and bring your travel paperwork printed too. So thankful for this experience. I didn't even know it was possible to get a passport that fast. If you have a later appointment, things are busier and slower, but they are st efficient processes. read more

Aside from crazy hours, I have had some crazy experiences here, including one where an agent let me go through with a wink, without realizing that it was a back-handed favor thar got me trapped up at every border I crosses for half a decade. From the downstairs security to the 9th floor everyone greeted me with a smile and pleasant hello and goodbye!! Went in today to drop off information to apply for my passport. I walked in and there were security officers and a metal detector. I asked the one officer (old white male probably early 60s) if this is where I need to be to drop off my application. He started laughing. The other officer walks up (African American male roughly early 60s) and says "I want to hear this conversation" and then they both proceeded to belittle me and make me feel stupid for not being in the right area. Told me to "get a pamphlet sweetheart" in the most condescending way. I literally left in tears. My bad for thinking the Chicago PASSPORT AGENCY could help me with my passport. Feb 25th, 2025. I would give zero stars if I could. My daughter needed to fly out of the country unexpectedly. We called down for an appointment. A very rude man told us they are not allowing anyone in the building. He said there are no more same day. They could do 3-day, but it would cost $900. The website still says you can walk in, and get a same day passport for about $200. I don't understand. We are over 2 hours away from this location and don't want to drive down just to be turned away. Why would they no longer allow people in the building? Covid is long over! What is going on? I had to get a same day passport for my daughter and was beyond impressed at how efficient and quick the process was! I was in and out in about 2 1/2 hours! The agent who assisted me, Kenya, was exceptional! She was quick to trouble shoot a resolution for a document I required and provided incredible customer service. Had a great experience at this agency. Very efficient and organized. My sister realized her passport was expired 24 hrs before an international flight. Our flight was at 9 PM. We came to the building at 9 AM. The line was already out the door but moved fairly quickly. They do not take walk-ins. Make sure you have an appointment and the necessary paperwork they ask for. It took us about 2 hours to complete the whole process for renewal. They told us to come back at 3 PM for her passport. Their business hours listed on Apple Maps say they close at 3 PM but you can disregard that. I don't believe she was charged any rush fees for a same-day passport so that was really pleasant!
