There were thousands of 'commercial' slot car tracks in the USA in the late 1960s and 1970's; there were a couple of dozen racing centers in the greater Chicago area alone. A lot of things caused the slot racing centers to close one by one- people not being as interested in hobbies and the rise of computer video games being a couple of the reasons. In the last few years there has been a revival of sorts with a certain amount of people who were glued to computer screens in the 1980's and 1990's playing "adventure" and "virtual reality" games discovering it was actually more fun "playing" in 3-D. So hobbies like model railroading, R/C airplanes and yes slot car racing have made a comeback. For a change, more new raceways have been opening the last few years in the USA than have been closing. Mid-America isn't just about being Slot Car Racing's Road America or Daytona International Speedwayt, it's also about people having fun and inviting their inner child to come out to play. Gamers World caught my eye, because I'm a sucker for puzzles and fun games (though I'm much too antsy to play them). With the holidays around the corner, this is an ideal stop for puzzles of all sorts, board games, fun classic toys like the Magic 8 Ball, Rubik's Cube, and classic hard core games like Dungeon and Dragons. Perhaps the coolest thing about this shop is the fact that they have a back area with tables where you can actually stay and play games, and they even have tournaments. No Pokemon cards for those wondering, but they have other cards I'm not familiar with. I'm not a professional in the trading card arena, but I overheard the manager or owner talking with someone else about the fact they don't take in old cards, but you can buy new ones. Fun stop! Some really great board games I've never seen before...and a few inappropriate ones worth checking out for sure.

We were coldly told the large "stuffed animals" in front were $400. They were on prominent display in front and the kids were simply feeling the fabric, nothing out-of-the-ordinary or obtrusive. There was a sign by them but it only said no food or drinks. Why put these items up front if you don't want people to touch or interact with them? I told the kids we weren't shopping there and received another cold & sarcastic "have a nice day" response from the rude employee on the way out. My kids are young, but they were even smart enough to point out that this isn't how you treat customers.
