Such a beautiful view! We always stroll the Chicago Riverwalk when visiting. I recommend only doing this during the summer when it's warm, as there's always a refreshing breeze from the river and parts of the walk are pretty shaded. The riverwalk has stairs that bring you to the main road or down by the river, so you can also choose your level. It's just a great pedestrian path and is by many of the main restaurants and shops. read more

Hello Friends... Let's keep Chicago "Classy" by using the blue recycle cans and black garbage cans along the route as you walk, run, stroll, ride your bike, or whatever. As of April 22, 2019 the Entrances to the Riverwalk from the Boat Launch area where Wendella boats are was open on that side (River North Side) however, the River South or the opposite side for entry was closed off and I had to walk to the Dearborn Street Entry Steps in order to access and enjoy the river front. The good news is that there appears to be access for those that use a wheelchair which is nice so that EVERYONE can enjoy the Riverwalk. City Winery appeared to be the only establishment open for food and drinks. read more

The Chicago Riverwalk runs along the south side of the Chicago River and connects to the Lakefront Trail and goes along all the way along Wacker to Lake Street. Of course entrance at each of the major streets will take you down to the Riverwalk. What's so great about this Riverwalk ya say? -Free. If you don't have money to take one of those guided boat tours, hell a walk along the Riverwalk is just as great! -Clean. Construction finally seems to be finished for the most part so you can enjoy a stroll along the walk. Most of the Riverwalk beyond Michigan and going west is new and untouched. -Lots of place to sit along the walk and just enjoy boats passing by and people watching if ya like. -Summer time strolls in the evening along the Riverwalk are my favorite. A combination of warmth and those Chicago city lights. The best. Cons? -Lots of store fronts seem to be closed during day time. Such a fun way to spend a morning in Chicago. Assuming you have the same amazing, 75-degree weather weather we had over Labor Day weekend, of course... We started at Wacker and meandered up to Michigan where we hopped off and made our way to Eataly. The views along the way can't be beat! I loved marveling at the buildings, flipping off Trump Tower, watching boats of all shapes and sizes (from Kayaks to yachts) pass by, and admiring the public art installations (don't miss the giant deer by Wacker). If we hadn't been on our way to Eataly, I would have stopped for a cup of coffee or glass of wine at one of the little shops along the way. Chicago is a beautiful city and every visit here should include a stop here . You can walk from Lake Shore Drive up to where it forks. Long before it became the riverwalk all fixed up in it's shiny glory with fancy stairs, artwork, and places to grab a drink and/or a meal it was and still is a working river. Way back my walks were confined to Wacker Dr. or looking down from one of our great bridges to enjoy the river. Now you can get up close, in some areas of the walkway you can even dip your toes in the river if you're so inclined. So glad they made these improvements, also can't wait for them to extend the walk to ChinaTown. Now my walks take me up close, being by the water takes you away from all the noise, can also make you feel as if you've stepped back in time. The only thing I'd love to see added is some prairie grass plantings, something to soften all the concrete. Of course, Chicago is really the name for smelly onions or from the onion fields that grew before we don't want to put that in, or do we? If you're a native Chicagoan, some things are just a part of you, the river, the lake and a ride along LSD. Just stirs the soul. read more

Um, how did I not know that Chicago was so aesthetic? Seriously. Maybe my feelings would be different if I came in the wintertime, but during summer the river is gorg. The riverwalk might have been one of my favorite parts of my trip. I strolled parts of it during my walks to other places and an especially scenic part of it was right next to the office buildings I was in. There's lush greenery everywhere, and lots of photo-worthy moments. I saw plenty of spots that had benches too. One day, someone had set up fishing poles and was letting folks fish for free. There are lots of riverside restaurants and bars. If I had time, I'd dine or drink a la carte. If I lived in the city, I'd totally come here to hang out all the time on breaks. The river winds right through the center of the city and it's convenient and scenic to take this path. There's lush greenery and flowers everywhere and the water is turquoise. read more

The Chicago Riverwalk is absolutely beautiful and best of all, it's free. It's easy to combine trips to the river walk and The Magnificent Mile because entry points to the river walk exist at the south end of the Mag Mile at DuSable Bridge. The river walk runs along the south side of the Chicago River from Franklin Street Bridge to the west out to Lake Shore Drive to the east where the DuSable Harbor and yacht docks are. The east-west walk spans roughly 15 city blocks. The walk is clean, nicely paved, and artistically/well lit. The trail is mostly tree-lined with lovely patches of green space and areas to sit and stand. There are restaurants along the trail and you can partake in fun activities such as kayaking through one of the rental shops along the way. We took a Wendella boat tour, which originated on the north side of the river, and I highly recommend it (I'm writing a separate Yelp review for Wendella, so look them up). The river walk is great for people watching both on the river (in boats, kayaks) and on the trail itself. It's great if you just want to walk alone, go on a romantic date, or stroll with your friends and family. It's safe and the views of the water and surrounding architecture are simply captivating. I love the view of the Wrigley Building from the river walk. Whether you're a local or visitor from out of town, the Chicago Riverwalk is not to be missed. read more

Night drinking on a boat haha if you are like me and made friends who owns their own yacht than you can say I'm on a boat I'm on a boat haha The view and ppl are amazing. The architecture of the buildings is really amazing I feel like I'm in a different state and I am when I look at them. I compare them to downtown la and New York but it's nothing the same. A close friend now has been keeping me company on the phone and I can share my experience with them. So I haven't been wild as I should be going haha. Tbh I can't help you with the parking. I'm sure they have parking structure but I am taking the cta which is the public transit. And I enjoy it to be honest. You can walk along side the river and get away from the crowded streets that's above. I'll take more pictures and show you what I mean. What sadden me most is the homeless rate out here tho. Atop the DuSable Bridge, you can see all of Chicago from the vantage point of a boat. It's such a cool bridge. I didn't see it raised, but I walked on it, and I'm here to say: it is very sturdy. Has lots of old metal, and looks to be in great shape. End of inspection. I'm kidding. The Chicago Riverwalk is a wonderful way to pass the most expensive looking Apple store on your way away from Trump tower. It's a little windy, so pack a jacket or something to that effect. After so many years of ignoring the river, it is great to see the City creating a world-class attraction like the Chicago River walk-a multi-block promenade running along part of the Chicago River. The weather was perfect (79 and sunny) the Friday we were visiting and after a nice lunch we decided to check out the River Walk. This is a real gem and a great addition to the city-and it's free. You enter by going down 50 or so stairs in several locations (look for the blue arched signs) and you can stroll several blocks on a wide raised walkway at the rivers edge passing under several bridges and with a great view of some of the city's architectural majesty. There are several sections to the walk from "amphitheater" to "floating garden" to food and drink. It's an easy flat walk that meanders back and forth with lots of great people watching and places to sit. In addition there's a number of cafes, a bustling wine bar and even a gelato stand in case you need refreshing. No visit to Chicago is complete without a stroll along the river and you might even see a celebrity or two. On our Friday visit we spotted Mayor Immanuel and his entourage walking up and down seemly inspecting the cleanliness and up keep. read more

Chicago downtown is one of the best downtowns I have ever visited. The reason for that is the Chicago Riverwalk. Beautiful would be an understatement for this place. The Riverwalk is built alongside the river surrounded by beautiful architecture buildings. It's a sense of calm just below the bustling city noises. The water is very clean and greenish blue. And it looked like you could do kayaking on it too!! There is a walk along the Michigan river and on the right day with the right summer weather, it's close to heaven. There's always some restaurant having people around drinking beer, you'll find people jogging or just lazying around with friends and family or even better their dogs. You can easily spend hours together here just walking around and enjoying the sights and noises and the beauty surrounding the Riverwalk. Chicago Riverwalk is every traveler's dream. It was magic (a downtown lit up Chicago at night). It has charm (the stone bleachers with trees for people to sit and enjoy). It has adventure (Rent a kayak and explore the river). It has taste (Try one of the restaurants along the way). I am love with the Riverwalk. It goes on for blocks and blocks and is perfect for exploring (If you have a stoller, no worries! There are a few ramps at either end of the Riverwalk and one in the middle). Water is black in the river and there are sewage outlets that are falling in river can be seen. Too much traffic and it smells of petrol al most all the times. The wine shop is the major reason people go there or the one's who are new to Chicago and few runners. The Chicago Riverwalk is a linear park that celebrates the Chicago River. It follows the south bank of the Chicago River from Franklin Street to the Lakefront Path. When my family and I toured Magnificent Mile, we became acquainted with the Chicago Riverwalk. Walking on the bridge over the Chicago River toward the Loop, my eyes were drawn to the Chicago River and the towering skyline. When I saw the sign for the Chicago Riverwalk, I immediately led my family in that direction. For the record, there has not been a riverwalk that is not as good as it gets (I have been to the ones in Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, and San Antonio). I anticipated the Chicago Riverwalk being as good as it getsl. It is! Throughout our week in downtown, we'd walk it in segments. The Chicago Riverwalk does such a well-done job celebrating the Chicago River, that it influenced my family and I to further see the Chicago River by the water taxi and Wendella Boat Tour. The Chicago Riverwalk is a continuous 5 star photo spot. It travels near several landmarks. From west to east they include Marina City, Trump International Tower, the Wrigley Building, Tribune Building, NBC Building, Centennial Fountain, and the Aqua. It travels under a handful of charming bridges. And its easternmost point overlooks beautiful Lake Michigan. I give the Chicago Riverwalk five stars in its connectivity to Chicago's public spaces. It connects to the bridges that carry the downtown streets across the Chicago River. At its easternmost point it merges with the Lakefront Path (gave it 5 stars), an 18 mile linear park fronting Lake Michigan. In a sense, the Chicago Riverwalk is a connection with the Navy Pier when used in conjunction with the bridge segment of Lakefront Path over the Chicago River. Regardless that the Chicago Riverwalk is as good as it gets, it is nonexistent along the South Fork of the Chicago River where the Willis Tower, Civic Opera House, and other landmarks stand. With this in mind, I would like to conclude this review by pointing out that when you look across the Chicago River at the Wrigley Building, immediately west of the Michigan Avenue bridge, that the Chicago Water Taxi and Wendella Boat Tours dock there. I highly recommend riding on both boats to see all of the skyline from the Chicago River. read more

I think the Chicago Riverwalk opened a few years ago, but I never went down there on my lunch break from work until today. So glad I did! I work right across the street from the stairs that go down there, and so I have no excuse not to enjoy it. It was 74 degrees, and slightly sunny, and so everyone and their mother was down there. Boats constantly passing by, and kids playing in the fountains squirting from the ground. There was a cute gelato place called Frost right when I got down there, so I indulged a little. Good stuff! Sat down and turned around and a little bee landed on a flower, and so I had to take a pic of him. ;) I can't believe this was my first time down there, but this is going to be a routine for my lunch breaks during summer. I could use some sun on my pasty white skin...and some gelato in my belly! read more

This has been my favorite spot in the city! The entire Riverwalk is around 1.25 mi and extends from Lake St to the lake shore. I have spent so many evenings going on walks or reading a book by the water after work. The Riverwalk is very clean and has plenty of plants and greenery. It is especially beautiful to go at night when the surrounding buildings are lit up against the dark sky. Chicago River View from Promenade This is a beautiful addition to the city which allows pedestrians a view of the city from another perspective. This Riverwalk extension begins at La Salle street and continues east bound on the south side of the river until you arrive at Lake Michigan. The city extended an artificial walkway around the bridges to create the walkway without having to punch a hole in the bridge to walk under the bridge. Great solution to a daunting problem. There is beautiful landscaping all along the Riverwalk with benches and seating scattered along the route. Also there are several Bars along the Riverwalk and Restaurants , Ice Cream Stands and Excursion Boats etc. It is a lovely place to just walk and enjoy the city atmosphere and architecture. Beware the biking enthusiast and the runner/jogger vying for equal space on the Riverwalk. But the Riverwalk beckons ... Not quite the San Antonio Riverwalk, but very similar, and very cool. Parts of it are under construction, so I'm sure it'll be amazing when it's all done, but overall I was very happy with walking along both sides of the Riverwalk while in Chicago. Lots of restaurants and attractions, but not as many shops as I was expecting. There are parks for the kids and seating for the adults that get tired of walking, and many historical markers along the way in the form of statues and art. read more

Not just a nice walk along the river, there's the floating planters by Wells St., the Vietnam Memorial by State St., the Bridgehouse Museum, more than a few different options for food and drinks, along with the opportunity to see and pet pups along the way (or sniff them, if you're a dog). I have to admit the best time to enjoy the Riverwalk is when it's mostly empty. Kukla and I prefer a quite Riverwalk to stretch our legs. It can get pretty busy and congested at peak times. City Winery is a great place to enjoy a drink while watching the boats go by, but it does get packed. The Riverwalk is also a good option for giving your dead pet bird a Viking funeral, wait till after dark though. read more

But thats ok - b/c for me - the Chicago Riverwalk is the next best thing. Newly renovated. Cleaned up (since I first visited the city several years ago). If you're walking along Wacker Drive - why not step away from all that traffic, walk down the steps at one of the many access points and walk right next to the river instead. My husband and I took a leisurely morning stroll down the Riverwalk. Down here you can taking an architectural sightseeing cruise or gaze up at the magnificent buildings or see some restaurants that are down on your level. There is a small area where artwork is displayed. They have a Vietnam Veteran's Memorial which I found touching. People jog or ride their bikes on this walk as it goes on for quite a number of blocks. At certain points you can see cars through what I would call tunnels. Plenty of stone benches are available to rest along the way. You can rent a kayak or go motor boating. There were however a couple of things that had me concerned. First there are many areas where you are literally at the river's edge and someone especially a child could easily fall in. They do have life preservers along the way and at one area we did see something that looked like a pool ladder but still I get nervous being so close to the water's edge. While it indeed allows you to shortcut some of the major streets unfortunately there was only one place where we saw a ramp leading up or down. Everywhere else you must climb stairs. Please keep this in mind if you plan to visit or have health issues. Due to time constraints we were unable to complete the entire walk or check out some of the eaterys. I can however say that a sightseeing cruise is a must if you have never been to Chicago. I have taken this cruise in the past and you can learn so much about the beautiful architecture of the buildings as well as their names. This is a relaxing and free activity one can do in a busy city like Chicago. A sunny day makes it even more beautiful. read more

I don't know about you, but when I'm having a $h*! day, I like to drown myself in baked goods (preferably doughnuts/donuts) or run until I forget what's bothering me (at least for the duration of said run). The little she-devil on my shoulder tells me doughnuts/donuts is always the answer and shoves a platter in my face. The angel advocates the run. After all, the angel says, the run has many pros. Running along the Riverwalk is *free*! All I've got to do is put on my workout gear and drag my butt down there, no matter how much the little voice inside me says to stay inside and waste the lunch break Googling Cate Blanchett pictures & videos like it's my day job. The run burns much-needed calories whereas consuming the doughnuts/donuts obviously does not... unless you count the serious guns I'm developing lifting them up to my face. We won't discuss how I refuel after the run with baked goods as that's another issue entirely... So yeah... if you're looking for an alternative to running along the Lakefront Trail, I highly recommend a run along the "Second Lakefront", which spans from Franklin Street to Lake Shore Drive. If you're up for it, a run along the Riverwalk will take you to Navy Pier. From Navy Pier, you can easily access the Lakefront Trail. The Clark Street entrance is closest to my office so I start there, run a mile or so out and run back. The scenery is beautiful - water at your side and the view of Chicago's infamous working bridges. Pro tip: avoid the crowds by running on an overcast day when the temps are in the 30s to 40s. You'll have plenty of open space available for your running pleasure. I made the mistake of running it when the temps were in the 60s. I had weave in and out of people to avoid collisions! Not fun. If you're not into running, there are plenty of other options for you to enjoy yourself along the riverwalk. There are several restaurants like City Winery Chicago. You can reserve a River Dome until April 30th. The domes look like igloos and you can enjoy the riverwalk away from the elements. The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is located along the riverwalk. If you'd rather be on the water, you can rent a kayak from Urban Kayaks and paddle your way down the river. Getting to the riverwalk is super easy as it is easily accessible with plenty of options to get there, depending on where you are. If you're from the 'burbs and taking the Metra, I highly recommend taking the Chicago Water Taxi. You can get on right outside the Ogilvie entrance on Madison Street. If you get off at Riverwalk Clark Street, you'll be in the heart of it. What gives, Chicago?! You rip off the famous San Antonio Riverwalk?! We pioneered the thing- you couldn't even come up with an original name?! The San Antonio Riverwalk is bigger- it goes for miles and miles across the Lone Star State. Everything's bigger in Texas. Bless Chicago's heart with this lil' stretch of concrete along a green river. It's just kinda a concrete walkway down a bunch of steps with a ramp traversing it. Am I missing something? Where are the cypress trees? I didn't see a single palm tree along here. And the river barges? Pfft. Everyone knows a Riverwalk needs lots of Mexican food joints. Margaritas and the Riverwalk go hand in hand, and there isn't a single one on here. You'd think with everything being frozen already, it'd be easy to get one. There's no salt on the rim of the glasses here, just on the streets. Yea, there are some scenic views along here. The Chicago River is quite beautiful, and the bridges that cross it are larger than Selena's Bridge. The skyscrapers that overlook the Riverwalk here are just as iconic as the Tower Life Building and the Tower of Americas in good ol' San Antonio. But this place does have a charm of its own. It's a great location to see the sites and take in the Windy City! read more

Here are the things I saw while on my River Walk/Jog/Run: - Gorgeous views of the river (duh), bridges, and Chicago skylines - Watching all the boats sail by - Bars, restaurants, and cafes - a great place to congregate for happy hour - Lots of areas to sit and relax to read a book, meditate, or listen to music - A beautiful 2km run To enjoy it at it's fullest, don't be in a rush...take your time and enjoy it all. Im a big fan of the Riverwalk.Im there quite a bit.Moreso than most people.Im a kayakfisherman as well as shore angler.Being near water is something I like to do everyday.Fishing or not.The views on the riverwalk are AMAZING.There is also plenty of GREAT PLACES to eat near here as well as decent places on the riverwalk.You can also rent kayaks here.I work a block away.That is not a coincidence.lol.Yes,I LOVE IT THAT MUCH!!! And if you like to fish there is PLENTY of fish to catch on the Chicago River even in the winter.If you are visiting Chicago,the Chicago Riverwalk is a MUST!!!! Sooooo much to do.You can take a water taxi to Chinatown for like FIVE BUCKS and eat the BEST EVER CHINESE FOOD!!!! And you can take the water taxi back to the riverwalk.Its TOTALLY worth it.I LOVE CHICAGO!!! read more
