For those new to London (like myself)... please do not get mad if you walk right past this spot. I walked past it 2-3 times. It is definitely a more challenging find in the evening. However, you'll find it. Enter through the door on the left. Go down the stairs and Shuh-bang.... you'll stumble upon a house full of chicken smacking folks. This was my first time here, but the vibe was happening. The chicken was absolutely mouth watering delicious and the chef was a funny guy. It was helpful that the hostess could tell me that there was Worcester sauce in the Mac and cheese and that they have another fish addition in the Bloody Mary. Very few hostesses have ever had that much knowledge about their menu. Other than that.... everything else is a go. What do I suggest you order?!? 1. Half-a-Chicken 2. Corn on the cob Be sure to mix the hot sauce with the smoke sauce for a tangy bite when dipping your chicken. Also, ask for a little extra butter that is drizzled on top to compliment the corn. The butter has small garlic chunks and Parsley and the corn is then sprinkled with salt. Trust me when I say you WILL lick your fingers. Don't come here for romance come here to chow down. read more

Chicken Shop is my quintessential definition of a hidden gem. It's my favorite meal in London, which is saying a lot given the plethora of amazing food in this little town. And it's tucked away below street level on High Holborn street where most people would just walk past without knowing what they're missing. The service is lighting fast so you can dine in on a Friday night and get served food within 15 minutes. And the food is outstanding. I've had both the chicken and the beef ribs here and they both shine. The chicken is marinated overnight and then roasted over an open fire on a spinning spit rod. Of course it comes out as amazing as it sounds. And the beef rib, served with cole slaw, is tender to perfection. Being from Texas, I've had a lot of great beef ribs and this ranks right up there with some of my favorites. I'll likely hit this place up on every visit I make to London. It's just far enough from the touristy parts of town (Leister, Piccadilly, Covent Garden) to make it possible to get the perfect meal without wait on a weekend night. May be my favorite finds so far. read more

Located in a basement very close to the British Museum, this place was a happy surprise. Prices were reasonable and the chicken quality was very good. The chicken was very tender and tasty, fries and salad also passed the bar. The menu is straight simple, quality can't be hidden by fancy descriptions. Service was fast and polite. Wow. So we are here in London and honestly we had been so disappointed in so many of the food places... until now. Mind you, we've been here a week already. So I know my chicken. Back home I've tried southern chicken, soul food chicken, Viet chicken, you name it. This place is some major competition. I was initially worried because you go downstairs into this place. But it is cool on a hot summer day, and well, there's a LOT of seating. But we still had a 5 minute wait at 12:45pm. Not such a long wait. First off, customer service is unbelievably awesome. Everyone tends to you and gets your order in immediately. Drinks were on our table in the first five minutes of sitting down. Orders were taken one minute later, and we were eating within 15 minutes. 15 minutes!!!! So... Mac n cheese. Yum. Coleslaw. Yum! And the chicken just falls off the bone... I grabbed one with my fork and it just started to fall apart. So that was already tantalizing me. Then when I put a piece in my mouth... ugh!!!! The herbs and flavors!!! I couldn't believe it. I have had a lot of chicken in my life and travels. In as many as 20 countries visited, this chicken is hands down the best I have ever tasted. Guys, I've been to many bbq joints in the Midwest and southern US. This place is unreal. So, if you're visiting say, the British Museum, walk on over to this place. You will not be disappointed!! A better Nando's. There I've said it. There is nothing left to say. In all seriousness, I love places that just do one thing, and do it well. At the chicken shop, they do chicken. They do it well. I ordered half a chicken (which is plenty unless you're a complete beast) and curvy chips on the side. The chicken was really good. The chips was good and made incredible with this garlic mayo sauce that they have. It's actually incredible (a little tang of spice). Also, the restaurant is pretty cool. It's underground and you can see where they cook the chicken. The only downside I noticed was that there is no signal or wifi. Should be easy to remedy though. read more

Finally good chicken in the UK. This place hits it out of the park. They serve chicken and chicken salad and awesome sides. Very limited menu but down to perfection. The mac and cheese was Great ! The chicken is pit roasted over a wood fire. Everyone in my group loved the chicken. The chicken was fall off the bone and seasoned nicely. The staff and service was friendly. They staff moved around in a frenzy pace and worked well as a team. It was not like your typically European staff of sit ya and forget ya. Great people! Stumbled upon this restaurant while sightseeing in London and I must say I'm so glad I did. Can I say that this place the best chicken nuggets I've ever tasted? Because they do. The chicken shop: does what it says on the tin! Delicious rotisserie chicken which you can have with some crispy chips, tasty coleslaw, sweet & tender corn on the cob (which you can have drenched in melted butter) and there's a lovely salad & avocado side you can order too! HOWEVER - the number one thing to come to the chicken shop for is... The Apple Pie! Possibly & probably THE BEST apple pie I've ever had. It's freshly baked and they serve it from the one big pie they cook. If you're lucky (like we were yesterday) you get the last slice and simply get given the whole pie dish with what's left in it. If you're feeling greedy ask for both ice-cream & cream! Another great thing to mention is the service. Always quick always friendly. This is particularly true for the Holborn branch as with the other branches I've been to, I've normally had to queue. The ONLY downside? It's closed on Sunday's?!? Nooooooooo! read more

Came across Chicken Shop in Holborn last night and remembered a colleague had told me about how good Chicken Shop in Kentish Town is - so I assumed they were the same. They are indeed and the food was great! To me the gist is it's a posher, better quality - but cheaper - Nando's with table service. The menu is short and sweet - you can have a whole, half or quarter chicken and there are just 4 few sides to choose from. My husband and I split a whole, beautifully spiced and deliciously juicy chicken, which came to the tabled cut up on the bone. And we ordered crinkle cut chips and the butter lettuce an avocado salad to go with. Everything was very tasty, including the sauces on the table to go with the chicken - though I would have preferred hotter sauces. read more

Hidden gem... we went in based off of my fiancé's googling... I'm assuming it was the manager or owner greeted us at the counter, took us to our seat, went over the menu/how their sauces compliment the food, and was very considerate. When you offer just one item in your menu you must nail it. And definitely at Chicken Shop they do so! Soft, well-macerated, perfectly roasted chicken.
