One needs NEGATIVE stars for this nonprofit. We ended up taking Inez Whitlow to small claims court in 2012. I would HIGHLY recommend steering clear of this organization and taking your money and donations elsewhere. This was such a personal experience that turned out horribly. I am only commenting on it now, because I realize how much I read reviews and how important feedback is. UPDATE: I explicitly instructed Chicks in Crisis to stop accepting any further payments from my son's father after I terminated their services because I believe they failed to protect our confidentiality. Despite that, they continued to accept his payments and, in my view, have been creating a false narrative that could be used against me in court. I am enrolled in the Safe at Home Program for protection from my abuser. Chicks in Crisis has provided my abuser with my email address and may be in the process of providing him with my physical address. During my initial contact with CIC, I was met with compassion and understanding. That changed when I was contacted by the CEO, Inez W. After hearing that I had limited funding but would make the payments for the authorized visitation, she audibly laughed. Inez went on to explain that her visitation services were $100 an hour, and she proceeded to gave me a total. She asserted that I wouldn't be able to afford it, and as such that she did not find herself being a good fit. *No, ifs ANDs or buts. No payment options. No asking about credit ability * When I politely expressed that her condescending comments and tone were taken as a cruel jest, and that by her implying that I shouldn't see my children through her watch, she dug in further. Inez began to insult my earnest attempt to have a safe meeting place. She appeared more money motivated than actually providing a safe service and very rude demeanor, and I conclude as her appeared biased trait are woefully unbecoming as a liaison for family matters. I sent my husband (alone) with top of the line donations from our grandkids a couple of times. Both times, he said the women were rude to him. He brought a load of stuff last month and was told in a rude manner, we're only taking diapers and clothes. And brushed him off, not even saying thank you for stopping by. We have both dropped off items in the past and were treated nice. We now know it's because he's a man and my husband felt that vibe for the second time. Inez is amazing with kids and I couldn't have asked for a better experience, both for my kids and myself. Her ranch is very fun for the kids and she quickly built trust with them being toddlers. Chicks in Crisis was a pleasant surprise. Idk what's with the racist/sexist reviews, as a brown man I felt none of this and saw her for months. She has a bunch of animals which the kids love seeing and a beautiful ranch, beats all of the other places and is affordable. I'm very thankful this place exists, and made my experience a good one, especially for the kids. The non-prpfit she runs does a lot of positive things for the community as well. read more

Very very unprofessional and do not recommend her services. She is demeaning, will try to strong arm you saying you owe your money and that you're "contractually obligated" to pay her even when you aren't the one required to be on supervised visits, did not schedule the visit and never got confirmation the visit was ever scheduled by the other party. I got a sour taste in my mouth from the moment I spoke with her on the phone for the first time. She has no empathy for her client base, is in it for the business and to get paid unfortunately. Recommended by our lawyer to supervise visits for our son and grandson. Terribly rude, demeaning and unprofessional. What kind of family service agency says, "if that 2 year old acts up I am cutting the visits short becuase 2 year olds are no fun." We used Inez Whitlow for supervised visitation between April and August of this year -2023. Our experience was fantastic and we were almost sad to go except for the fact that the visits cost money! Inez lives in Elk Grove but on several acres. Her property is very cute and includes a big garden, an outdoor kitchen, an open barn, and the house. Her property was one of the reasons we were interested in using her for visitation because it's so unique and fun for the kids, but after we met her we knew she was the right choice. She has chickens which the kids loved. If permitted, she will allow family members to come to visits to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day etc. Inez goes over the rules at the intake visit so everything is clear. She is a straight shooter who uses a fair process to perform her job, operating within the legal guidelines set forth by family court services. She is very loving and affectionate and bonded immediately with the kids, ages 5 and 8. She recognized the stress they were under, not being able to see their Dad regularly. She treated the kids with kid gloves and went out of her way to help them emotionally during the visitations. She helped to introduce and talk about the divorce process with the kids, navigating difficult conversations in the most developmentally appropriate manner. She guided us through what we may or may not see happen along the way. Lastly, for a fee, she provides visitation reports if requested, which she sends to you, your attorney, the opposing party and their attorney, and the court. Her reports were quite thorough and included things the kids said and did, which showed their relationship with the visiting parent, how much they missed him, and how they were handling visits. This proved to be very helpful for trial and mediator visit. Inez is willing to take kids off site for different activities including movies, restaurants, fairytale town and anything else that the kids (and parent) want to do and can do during the time alotted for visitation. We would definitely highly recommend using Inez Whitlow for court supervised visitation if you're faced with this situation. read more

I was vulnerable and came to chicks n crisis during a time I needed help most in my life. I have a toddler and also was about 20 weeks pregnant when I first asked for help. I left an abusive relationship, became a single mother, living in a small bedroom at a family members house til I can get on my feet and receiving no finanical , physical , emotional help from my children's father. When I first came for services it was in September 2022 (being 20 weeks pregnant with a toddler) , they were so kind to me and understanding and gave me a lot of items for my toddler and myself- I was very much grateful. they told me to come back in 60 days since I'm not enrolled in school yet and once I am then it would be every 30 days and next time they could help me with my newborn baby since he would be born around that time. on their paperwork and on their website it states that if you're pregnant and 26 years of age and older they will give you a one time service and that is it. I am 23 years old, came to them for help already pregnant and in a crisis so they were willing to help me , this baby & my toddler because of the circumstances. 60 days pass and I go to them for help again, needing diapers and wipes. they told me since I'm pregnant they can no longer help me. It was a one and done deal. i was told way different from the first time I went and explained I spoke to someone else before and they were super helpful and told me that they would help me , my todddler and this new baby once he's born but any children / pregnancies after this they would not help me anymore . Which I totally understood and was okay with. when I tried to explain my situation and experience from last time the lady did not want to hear about it and quickly shut me down. She said she didn't care about that and that's her rules and she only has so much money she gets into this. I just feel torn as a single mom , getting back on my feet after fleeing an abusive situation while pregnant and with my toddler, that a program like this that's meant to be there for moms in a crisis can be so careless and inconsiderate to a mother trying her best and vulnerable enough to ask for help. It took a lot for me to ask for help and this is a lot for me to share my story and put my business out there . It's not right. more could have been done to help me out or been a little more understanding. i specifically thought they would care more considering their website has a whole tab for pregnancy and being supportive for resources and help during pregnancy. This is why so many mothers feel helpless and struggle more than they should have to. it is hard enough to get back on our feet and ask for help in order to do so but with programs like this that don't truly care or want to help those in a true crisis / need , why so many mothers and kids end up homeless or in a shelter. why babies are born malnourished because the mom didn't have money to pay for food because she had to provide for her other kids, etc . please do better as a program and organization . Women rely on these programs at their worst times in their life and when they are in a crisis. where else can we go when we need help if you're not even filling up to your name , chicks in crisis ? read more

Chicks in Crisis and their Executive Director Inez Whitlow is truly a gift for both parents who need assistance AND prospective adoptive parents who are looking to begin or add to their family through adoption. Referred to Chicks in Crisis through our Adoption agency, Inez was immediately welcoming to my wife and I; led us through the process she uses and how she works with women who may choose adoption instead of parenting. Inez also was in constant communication with our family during the ENTIRE adoption process and was the one who called us mid morning in February of this year to tell us our son had been born and to come to the hospital to meet him. Inez is a no nonsense woman with a heart of gold and whose ONLY goal is to provide successful outcomes the kids born to her families. Our family will continue to support Chicks in Crisis and we hope that if you are looking for assistance as a young family, pregnant woman, or adoptive parent you will seek her out as well. read more

I can not even find the words to express my gratitude for the excellent care, compassion, encouragement and guidance I have received from Chicks in Crisis. Inez is incredible with the hugest heart ever!! She was a huge emotional support for me during my agency supervised visits. Inez and staff helped make our visits wonderful without all the stigma of being on agency supervised visits. So much so that my son and I will be continuing our friendship with the staff at Chicks in Crisis. I am excited and looking forward to the upcoming crock pot classes! Obviously the 4 negative reviews are not even from the person who was requesting assistance because if they knew the truth, they would not be ignorant enough to post LIES. Life is not handed out on a golden platter, you have to work for what you want and even though handouts are always nice, you need to put in the effort yourself. The services offered at Chicks in Crisis are more than you can find at many places in Sacramento and surrounding areas. I just found out about this program at first I didn't know if I should call but as soon as I did and they answered the phone they were so nice so straightforward so helpful this isn't just a clothes closet or a program for free diapers or wipes there's a program that helps women in crisis in so many ways they have help with depression with anxiety parenting classes they have a garden area it's not like a building that you walk into and you're like a welfare office for a food bank or or excetera it's an actual house with pets you have to see it to believe it I've been in programs maybe not a lot of programs but I must say this program Topsham Mall they help women with younger children 5 or younger I want to say but they were still able to help me with my two older children that are 8 and 11 no strings attached still told me if I needed somebody to talk to at any time to please call when I left I was close to tears they are doing so much for this community and helping so many people I cannot believe I did not know about this program they gave me a hug on my way out and I saw other women coming in so I'm just wanting to talk somebody in a little bit of baby food or formula wow I'm lost for words I wish this program was around when I was a teenage mom but it's here now!!! I'm not sure if she was having a bad day or what but it was very clear that she did not want me coming to her place of business. I am only giving one star because this will not let me give zero stars. I am not usually the type of person to leave a negative review, but I am very upset and taken back by the event that happened yesterday. I have been trying for two months to drop off infant clothes (practically brand new), formula and other nursing items. The hours of operation don't work with my work schedule. I called in to see how I could drop off the donation. First I was told they had just gotten someone to work until 5pm - when I called to verify a week later, they told me that was not true. OK stuff happens. So I asked again how I could drop off the donation. I was told by the person on the phone to show up on Tuesday since they have legal meetings on that night. So last night I worked it out and got off work early to make it in time. When I got to the office, some (rude) girl said, "We closed at 4 but I'll take the items." I explained to her that this was when I was told to come. She asked with attitude "Who told you this?" I told her not sure it was who answered the phone. She then repeated we close at 4 and I couldn't come in. I told her if she didn't want the donation I could take it elsewhere. She then said no we will take the donation but we close at 4 and started to repeat the same lines as before. I had to walk away so I wouldn't make a scene. I didn't even get a thank you! She acted like I was bothering her! I just want to give to someone who doesn't have the friends and family to buy them items like I have been blessed with. I know first-hand how expensive clothes and especially formula can be. I hope this review is taken seriously and management re-evaluates the workers they have. I have talked to a couple of mothers I know and they also received attitude when speaking with people from this office. It's a shame; we all agree that if this is how it is going to be, we will take our donations elsewhere. read more
