They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and regardless of where you sat, there was a nice mix of locals and tourists, which always feels like a good sign. We chose to sit inside. We did a walk in and were lucky to get a table. From other reviews I had read beforehand, reservations are recommended, especially during busy dinner hours. We ordered Regitze Barner's Favorites, which included Patty shells, Wiener schnitzel, and old fashioned apple stew. We also started with Miss Barner's herring specialty and the Skagen toast, then finished with the kransekage. The staff made the experience even better. When they served the herring, they asked if we knew the proper way to prepare and eat it. Since we did not, they happily walked us through it. They gave the same thoughtful attention to the table next to us, showing them how to debone their fish. It never felt pretentious, just genuinely welcoming and eager to help us non locals experience these Danish dining traditions. The food was fantastic. The Patty shells, filled with chicken and white asparagus, were rich and comforting. The Wiener schnitzel was perfectly crisp with a tender interior and served with amazing potatoes, peas, and a delicious brown sauce. The old fashioned apple stew was light, subtly sweet, and layered with a crisp base, apple compote, lightly whipped unsweetened cream, and a dollop of jam on top. The herring specialty was a great introduction to Danish herring, with well balanced flavors that were approachable even for first timers, while the Skagen toast was fresh, creamy, and packed with sweet shrimp and fragrant dill. The favorite of the meal, though, was the dessert--kransekage!. The marzipan had just the right amount of sweetness, and I ended up enjoying it even more than the apple stew. As a tourist, I cannot say whether every dish was prepared exactly as tradition dictates, but everything we had was delicious, and the warm, attentive service made for a wonderful final dinner in Copenhagen. If you are looking for classic Danish cuisine in a cozy setting, I would happily recommend Frk. Barners Kælder.

(Warning: do not ask fors "schnaps." Ever. In Danish it's "snaps," with the letter a pronounced like ahhhh. Our dear friends Elke and Per selected Slotskælderen and made the reservation. You need a reservation. There's no menu. Instead the host invites your table up to a counter with examples of each of the sandwiches. You tell him which ones you want -- two per person is plenty -- and 10 minutes later they show up at your table. I had one sandwich with smoked eel + scrambled eggs and one with gravlaks. The first was great. The second was even better. I don't think I've never had better gravlaks. (Note: gravlaks is salmon that has been cured for 24 hours in a mixture of salt, sugar, dild and snaps. It is not smoked or cooked. It so good that it is life altering.) Slotskælderen is in fact in a cellar. And it was noisy with groups of mostly men having business lunches and getting louder as they drank beer and snaps. It's an experience-- you're not eating sandwiches. You're are imbibing Danish culture -- excellent food, camaraderie with your companions and great drink. It's way more fun than a museum or a canal tour and key to understanding Denmark.

The salmon it's self was cooked perfectly. Gently grilled on the outside and moist on the inside, and vegetables were perfectly seasoned. The sauce on the fish was an excellent touch. All in all, it was worth the $. He also recommended Carlsberg Pilsner. Beer that is popular in Denmark. I was tempted to get another one! And finally the desert. The sauce didn't have much flavor (crazy how extra sauce costs 35 DKK more). The VEAL LIVER dish tasted better than the national dish ironically. Gave a tremendous portion. The potatoes were skinned. The gravy had some taste compared to the other sauce from the national dish. Decadent pickled cucumbers which provided a nice palate cleanser.
