mediocre sandwiches, overpriced provisions (and i don't mean just expensive, i mean likely price gouging as the same items are cheaper elsewhere in nyc), and bad service. good coffee though. this isn't the first time the black girl with the nose ring has been nasty to me, not sure what her issue is, but it seems like other reviews mention her attitude as well. (also, i'm black so please don't try to use race here, she just has an attitude problem). if you would like patrons to wait outside until their order is ready due to limited space, then make a sign. don't passive aggressively stare at them as if you don't want them there or rudely tell them to get out. also they treat the neighborhood men who hang around their store as if they don't belong when it is in fact them who's gentrifying the neighborhood. i'm starting to see that the only reason chickys is still open is bc it's likely the only type of place in the neighborhood, i hope a place with better service and better food, opens up like it, so i won't be forced to go here cause it's convenient. read more

Stopped by for the first time today. Greeted by the most friendly and helpful lady with a big smile. Ordered a meatball parm sub. Took about 15 minutes to prepare (we walked around outside to wait as the crowd made the small space confining. We LOVED the sub. From the delicious roll, to the tender and flavor-packed meatballs, to the garlicky marinara sauce - all were top quality, generous and wonderful. It's about time!! Bed-Stuy has been changing as quickly as the rest of NY. Chicky's is a reflection of that change. It's a specialty shop and if people know me then they know that I'm a sucker for a specialty shop! People dirty talk..I food talk!! "Local", "Farm Raised", "Ohhhh---rganic"..oh my!! Tell me more! I was so happy with the lay out. There's a rustic southern charm to all of Tara Oxley's projects. It adds that feeling of home. A nice home. But still a home. A place were you want to order a Stumptown coffee and sit on the front bench and take a load off. Chicky's is named after grandfather so the feeling of home makes sense. I love all the hints of design from a lamp with a hand sculpted face to the giant taxidermy turkey. And the dangling cords and lights above. The exposed brick wall is lovely. This is the place to come for a variety of cheese. Also fresh produce that might be hard to find elsewhere like graffiti eggplant. There's tons of yummy pantry items such as, Herbare the herbed salt that was my staple when I lived in Germany. And I have become a recent fan of Cream Nut peanut butter for $5/ This is a company from Virginia that has been making their minimal pb for 80 years!! I got think they got the recipe down. There's also tons of new items to try and fall in love with. You can also find a variety of prepared sides that could easily complete a dinner party or make a quick dinner. I'm drawn to the breakfast sandwich menu where one can build their own. And yes, there's an addition of avocado! My favorite! Their chocolate basket here states "it's choco-clock" ! Top little store, privately owned which is always good and a local to Bed Stuy too, in a great part of Bed Stuy. Everything one could need, good prices and always greeted with a smile. The croissant bread pudding is literally life changing, it's like the best thing since sliced bread... recommend it alone just for that! read more

I'm not diggin this place. Decided to give it a whirl today. Prepared food in display case looked old. I settled on a soup. Disappointed because for almost 8 bucks I got broth with carrots and celery. I can't account for the baked goods as I didn't attempt to try them. I plan to pass this place up in the future. Honestly I don't think this place gets a lot of play, which may be the reason their food looked old. I see some people outside holding some of their baked goods from time to time. My friend got sick here the first time he went, and vowed to never go again. Another friend who is a professional food person said she wouldn't trust the fish... This is not how I want NYC to end up. This kind of place sucks. No prices on lots of the inventory, little to no cheap items. This isn't soho, you out of touch motherfuckers. Its bougie/classist/elitist with a smile. Fuck that. This place looks really cozy and cool and well-stocked, but sadly turns out to be slow, overpriced, and mediocre-to-bad. My friend and I went to get to-go lunches, and this was both of our conclusion. We were shocked at what we respectively had to consume--a box of prepared food which took an aeon to put together, and a sad wilted salad with a blah dressing that blotched the surface--especially given the price and time of preparation. We should have trusted the wisdom of the crowds, which thronged Brown Butter across the street. The only commendable thing here: their ridiculously tasty (and free) fruit water. I come here almost every day to get coffee and a sandwich. The food is delicious, good coffee, and great friendly staff. And it's locally owned! They have some of the healthiest options in the area as well, even providing a CSA Pick up. Can honestly say of all the times I've come here I've never had a bad experience. read more

Chicky's is owed by the same team behind Eugene and Co, so it goes without saying that everything is made fresh with an emphasis on locally sourced goods. That being said, prices are higher than at your deli or local supermarket, but that is to be expected. I've stopped by Chicky's for treats to bring to parties, and it's great for picking up snacks to enjoy outside during the warmer months. On my last visit, I got a bacon egg & cheese that was a hearty sandwich--ran me about $12 but it was worth it. It feels good to support a local spot that clearly cares about the neighborhood it is in while also supporting farms and small food/beverage businesses. Next time to you need to bring something to the function, see what Chicky's has to offer! read more

Not one for reviews, but this is a special spot in the neighbourhood that makes my day every time I stop in. It's cozy and every little detail has been considered; you can see that each of the shelves have been carefully curated with speciality goods and fine fare. There's always a seasonal selection of fruits and veggies up front, as well as fresh prepared foods, but if I'm being honest, I come for the cookies and pastries! It's great having a shop like this on my block when the closest grocery store is just out of reach, and doesn't carry frozen Roberta's pizza anyways! read more

I always have really ambitious plans for my weekends. All the places I'll go and things I'll accomplish. And then I stay in bed until late afternoon and realize I never picked up cheese for my friend's wine party. Luckily, Chicky's is located directly between my apartment and the aforementioned wine party and they have cheeses. Not just any cheeses, good cheeses. No Kraft singles here, no sir. I ended up selection three cheeses - morbier, la tur, and a funky Gorgonzola. I would have liked more charcuterie options, but did take their last little pot of a delish pate. They have a lot of locally produced goods and I was able to pick up a fresh baguette from Saraghina (they sell some of their pasta too!). At the counter, they have a selection of treats from Chez Alex and I purchased cookies made by a woman who lives just down the street. They have a small produce and meat selection, which I'll be back to try. You can't expect to do your regular grocery shopping here, but they definitely fill in the missing pieces. read more

I take it back, they're the worst. Awhile ago they installed a bench/box thing around the tree (public) that's growing in the sidewalk area (public) in front of the store. That's all well and good, but I just noticed that they've written "For Chicky's Customers" on it. Deciding to build something in a public space doesn't give you the right to also decide who uses it. You opened a business in a vibrant community, try a little harder to be a decent member of it. I wish they would close and something more generous of spirit would open instead. No shade to this establishment, but I came here for a little dessert after eating across the street from here, yesterday. It had the vibe and feel of a general store...in Alabama...in 1856. The cashier was very pleasant, but the store didn't have anything that went with what I had to eat. I had the bread pudding, which was delicious, but they had no ice cream to go with it. The cashier said I could purchase a pint. Say what now? Then I asked for hot chocolate, which I asked be made with milk but it tasted like pure tap water and simple syrup. They had me all the way f*cked up after that. And they really don't have indoor seating. The chairs are juxtaposed in a way where you are staring at the cashier while you eat your pricey dessert or sandwich. I found a table to sit at, which I think was part of the display. One of the cashiers was like "oh where did that come from?!?" As I say and ate, I watched hipster after hipster come into the establishment to buy a few things. One woman bought 32 ounces of tangerine juice...for $11.00. Hell, I was upset for her. Who is pricing these items, Ray Charles?!?! That same brand of juice sells for $4.50 online. And with the crackheads coming in and out of the establishment, I felt like I was interrupting a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Only in Brooklyn. SMH. read more

There are bodegas all over the neighborhood - a grocery store a couple blocks away (Foodtown) and markets all over Fulton. But sometimes, I want a little nicer pasta, olive oil, or maybe condiments, some coffee or sandwich. Or I want to just run across the street to grab a few things to throw dinner together rather than walking a mile round trip. Picking up some items at Chicky's is no more then ordering dinner off Seamless, better quality + quicker too! I don't understand the commenter below... from everything I've experienced at Chicky's, all of the people who work there, as well as the owner, are incredibly friendly and inviting -- and the store is quaint and intimate, a place that fosters getting to know your neighbors and much warmer then pushing a cart at the grocery store. The store that existed before there, I loved the exterior and what it represented so much - but for a stationery store, there was never any paper and seemed to provide little by way of consumer goods to the neighborhood. Chicky's is a small business, owned by a local who lives half a block away, supporting other small businesses and is providing a desired service to many. read more

Thank you God, finally a place in our neighborhood (after nine years of waiting) that has fresh, beautiful, delicious, farm to table, well thought out and prepared food as well as well curated and stocked shelves and coolers. This goes along with a tremendously friendly counter staff and truly creative and ingenious culinary staff. I have used Chicky's for everything from coffee and breakfast, to lunch and dinner sandwiches to taking some of their amazingly tasty and fresh catfish fillets to BBQ for Memorial Day weekend. I have never been let down. I have honestly almost completed the entire run of the sandwich menu, and the specials they have are fantastic, soups and sammy's alike. Hector, I love and hate you for getting me hooked on your old bay tartar sauce. Feels like someone spent a lot of time considering and thoughtfully curated everything from the Intelligentsia Coffee all the way down to the hard to find good Dijon Mustard. I come to chickys almost everyday! One of the baristas knows my order by heart. Sad to say I will never purchase anything from here again. My coworker went to go pickup breakfast for us, almost every time she comes back with our orders her sandwich is made incorrectly and missing items that she asked to be added. My order is normally correct I only get egg and cheese on ciabatta. Today my egg was not cooked at all it wasn't running but the clear slime from the yolk was very visible and very disgusting. I called and the woman who answered the phone was very snappy and rude not like usual. She asked me to come back. I said I wasn't interested in getting anything remade she said that's fine just come back. I get there she says " I didn't service you today" knowing that my coworker ordered on my behalf and we come in there every damn day. She looked up the order and read the two sandwiches back to me I told her I believe she ordered a salad as well she says " yeah I'm not refunded that" . She gave me a refund that I never asked for and tried to sweeten the situation by telling me to have a good day and apologized.That was the only time that I got an apology. read more

This store contains ridiculously priced products for the neighborhood it has chosen to gentrify. $29 per pound cheese. $20+ per pound meat. My boyfriend bought popcorn and a bar of chocolate here and it cost him $13. The types of products also include pasta for $8 a box, canned goods for triple the price they should be, just basically the most cliche "general" store you could imagine. Nothing interesting about the design. And nothing inviting for locals. That's how this store rolls. I'm so happy that Chicky's came into the neighborhood! It's a very cool space, not too huge but still a nice selection of both everyday and more rare items. I love that I can grab a bunch of different prepared items as either side dishes or mains...the meatloaf was delicious, a standout! It's not going to be where I do my huge grocery runs, but they have so many items that I only see at Whole Foods or online that I already find myself stopping into Chicky's more regularly than most other markets. This place makes me so mad. In this corner of bed stuy, there aren't many places where one can buy nice produce, cheese, bread, or uncommon ingredients and I had really hoped that Chicky's could fill that gap. Instead, they have a tiny unpredictable selection of produce, they don't have basic dairy products or eggs, they don't sell bread. They do have a random assortment of highly overpriced pantry items, and their food to go is not particularly good. Their pastries are just bad. A croissant I had recently was greasy and mushy and a chocolatine tasted chalky and not fresh. And they cost 4.50$! Their sandwiches are fine but expensive and it can be a long wait even when nobody else is in the store. If you want a much better cup of coffee and a pastry, go to anchor coffee (one block away). If you want a delicious lunch with friendly service go to bed stuy provisions (4 blocks away). If you want to pay 11$ for a bundle of white asparagus then I guess go to chicky's. read more
