We had wonderful time at our first Luau! I was a little disappointed that this one was at a waterpark, as this backdrop made it feel not as authentic, but once the sun started to go down it was amazing!! They did a great job making it interactive, and teaching us about the different Polynesian cultures. The dancers were amazing, the food was great, great sunset made for really nice photos. Something i feel like they could have done better was the seating, they know how many people booked ahead of time, yet they still set up so many tables and MANY were left empty. I didn't like this at all, i felt like when i was taking my pictures i kept thinking to myself, I didnt want to show the empty tables, cause it would look like this place cant event fill up the venue it must not be good. Just my two cents. Overall i think it was an amazing experience. Its defiantly not cheap and not sure i would do it again, but once in a lifetime thing, I dont retreat one bit!! read more

Despite the rain, what a great evening! I had researched local luaus available during our long day in port on our cruise. They offered free transportation during a deal in January, when I booked, which was super helpful and only solidified the decision to go to Chief's. The charter bus was easy to find and left right on time. We picked up others (now our family/ohana per Cousin Brian, who was our host from the bus) from local hotels and made our way to the luau. Upon arriving, they immediately handed out ponchos, which were definitely needed. Mostly light rain on and off throughout the evening, but that didn't spoil our time there. They took extra care to dry our seats ahead of initially sitting down at our table and when we returned from the buffet. We were also greeted with a fresh flower lei (booked the Royal Experience). At our seats was a lei po'o waiting for all. They immediately offered us a complimentary drink and a gentleman had fresh coconut ready to try. Just ahead of dinner, the men brought out the roasted pig. A blessing was asked in the native language, and then it was dinner time. All staff were kind and helpful. All of the food was really good, especially the kalua pork, which had a great smoky flavor. I'd dare to say it was better than any pork butts I've ever smoked at home. The men played music and sang while we ate, which we enjoyed. On to the show.... Multiple groups of dancers performed for us, showcasing different cultures, like Samoan and Polynesian. Looked and felt very authentic to me. All performers were awesome and engaged the audience. Chief was great and led the entire evening. The fire dancers were also very cool to watch. I booked the Paradise package. I'm glad I didn't spring for the Royal and I would have been ahead of the game if I'd have gone for the Aloha (cheapest) option. After I booked the event, I received a confirmation text that gave approximate driving time and advice to be early. We arrived around an hour prior and started strolling around the area and we were approached by a rude woman. She gave me the ol' snotty, "Can I help you?" question. I replied that we were there for the Luau. She rudely told us that check in was not for another hour and we had to get out. I asked for her name and she said she was Sui and she was the GM. This was a bad omen. If the GM treats guests like this the workers can't be much better. If I hadn't already paid, I would've just left. It was entertaining waiting in the parking lot and watching others follow our footsteps only to see them getting kicked out like we were. Finally, 10 minutes after the advertised check in time, we were herded into our respected groups and "allowed" in. From this point, things started to improve. The workers were very friendly and accommodating. When we found our assigned table it was a bit of a let down. Not worth the extra I paid as we were right next to the cheap seats. Oh well. The prelim show started which was fun and entertaining. Then we lined up for the buffet and it was very good. Well organized and great food. After eating, the show started. My wife was having trouble seeing over the crowds heads and we ended up standing in the very back to see. The show was ok. I've seen better but it was ok. The Chief needs to let the younger warriors do the fire dancing. He was probably good in his day but I think he's losing his edge. All in all, it was an ok show. In closing, I think the initial experience with the GM tainted the luau. I had to keep reminding myself to put it behind and enjoy the event. If not for her, I might have given 4 stars. read more

The show, stage setup, costumes and performers were all top notch. They had men and women performing different dances themed from different countries. Fire twirlers were incredible and the chief keeps things moving with his witty banter, and he is also an incredible singer. The musicians were all very talented and the performers did an awesome job keeping the audience involved. The one thing that could have been improved was the food. If they set the food up somewhere closer to the dining area, your food might still be warm when you get back to your table. The only thing that stayed hot was the chicken. This was a last minute add for us as a lot of the other luau options were fully booked. Really this should have been our first choice. It had everything: food, activities, culture, performances and a very welcoming atmosphere. Led by the chief himself, it is a guided celebration of Polynesian history. I wouldn't expect high food quality for such a large production but everything was delicious. My favorite was a kalua pork. Paired well with the ube bread! We got a couple of drink coupons with each adult admission and Mai tais were definitely on the menu. The evening ended with a bang as the fire dancers lit up the stage. I will start with the only positive thing about this place that they do offer military discounts. Just so you know this is located inside of a waterpark and you have to park in their parking lot after the park closes. They have you wait to check in at 5:15 PM, but in reality they don't start checking in until about 5:30 PM. The staff seemed very unorganized and the lines were quite bong. The show was just OK. The restrooms are very dirty. Do not expect to have a nice scenic view since it is inside of a waterpark. They take very long times to get your drinks. The my ties were very terrible. They only offer water and fruit punch as part of your meal which I believe they should have sodas or other options available. There are a lot of Nats while you're eating your meal. The seating is very cramped and just so you know when you order your tickets online it's not to scale with the map that they see online. Just get the cheapest ones because you have plenty of room to see the show. Don't pay that extra VIP experience too much money unless you want to be on the very front of the rope. The buffet lines get very long they do say you can go for seconds or third or unlimited, however by the time you get your food, there's no time to go back because they have finished serving. The food in my opinion was very unacceptable. The bread was dry. The pork was OK. I was just not impressed with the food. It did not taste good at all. We actually left before the show ended. in my opinion do not waste your time with this place. Find another spot that has a nice scenic view. read more

I must admit I was nervous when I brought the ticket online. I was like a luau at the water park. But I had my family in town and had to take all 6 of us to a luau before they left. Being that it was 6 of us I needed a luau that was affordable, provided a great experience and wheelchair accessible. This was it and I was able to buy last minute ticket. I had a ticket to Germaine's but it was the day of warning Tsunami and they were closed the next day. It had plenty parking available. Ensure to get there early. I got there 15 mins early and it already had people in line waiting. Before entering you get a show in front of the sign. If you want to capture it after check in stay near the sign. When you enter you can take your family photos to purchase later. After that you will be taken to your seat. There is tattoo artist, vendor selling merchandise, a pre show and music. Now to get your drink you have to go down the stairs. So make sure to have someone with you that can go downstairs or ask a worker to make your drink. Water was free and all other drinks you had to buy. The host was funny and kept us entertained all night. The buffet is to the right when you first come in. It is not in the same area as the seating area. They didn't disappoint everything was good. I highly recommend go check it out. read more

Really fantastic performances interspersed with comedy and informative bits about the different Polynesian cultures and "how-to" demonstrations. The decorations paid homage to Polynesian cultures and really did a great job of setting the atmosphere. The food was pretty good, the Mai Tais were great, and we enjoyed purchasing a few items at the craft display too. And the staff made you feel like part of the family with their wonderful service. As long as I like it no matter what my husband said it was too commercial, I was ok. I understand the high expectation of the show since my husband watched Brady Bruch TV show from decades ago. When we got there the crew were late and we had to wait until the crew arrived to get in with a bit messy on how they organize the check in. Food was not great but I'm okay, I just want to see the show and have some drinks. Grilled crispy whole pork is was just for show. The pork at the dinner was the pork made from an oven. I tried to appreciate food they provide for us but honestly, I would say......yes, it is a commercial show. Mostly tourist coming here for one time experience. This is hands down the best Luau. Once you book , they will send you the message on the phone with reminder and directions on how to reach from the previous day. They share the location with a water park and have Lots of parking. They welcome you with lei or necklace made of tiny shells based on your package . Once you enter , they will take you to your assigned seat and you will find nice headbands made of leaves waiting for you on the table ( one for each person) . They start with some fun activities where they ask you to try rubbing stones /woods to ignite a fire and also give you coconut in shell as a welcome appetizer . There are welcome drinks as well . We took Mai Tai . It's was delicious. After some fun small activities, they will direct you to the buffet where you have nice selection of dishes ( noodles , sweet buns , chicken , pulled pork , fish , salads , pineapple cake and fruit -pineapple ) and you can come to your table and they start the performance. Since there are so many people who attend , they will make sure that they tell you when it's turn to get up and get the food. So it's very very organized. They have a nice waterfall and some Tropical trees and plants behind the stage whixh looks very cool and give you the aloha vibe. They perform different types of tribal dance and have a spectacular performance using fire ( which comes at the end ) . In between they will make sure they involve the audience and make them dance along with them and do lot of humorous things which makes it very very different from other Luaus. We were celebrating our 10th anniversary there and they called everyone who were celebrating their special day and played some romantic tribal song and made us dance as well and greeted us with flowers bouquet. If you're going for food this is a definite NO. They don't even serve you the pig they show on the stage. It's probably a day old pig- dry. No salt and pepper. Buffet style, cold, and nothing was good. So windy everything was flying off the table including drinks. If you're going for the show: DEFINITELY. The show was fantastic. The chief was funny, great history and stories. The dancers were great. The fire dancers were very professional and champions. Loved the atmosphere of the stage. When we arrived, check-in was a few minutes late and followed by about 10-15 minutes of standing off to the side. Eventually, there was a short demo, and then we were let through the gate. Inside, there were a few activity stations, but just as we started to explore, the bell rang to find our seats. I would've liked a bit more time and something a little more engaging before the show. The buffet line moved quickly (thankfully), and the food could have been a little warmer, but it was satisfying. Right after dinner, the show kicked off. The performance started with a small group of dancers, alternating sets between male and female performers. As the show went on, the energy picked up. The host kept things fun, the costumes were colorful, and the pacing was solid. By the end, the whole thing really came together in a way that felt memorable. One thing that made me raise an eyebrow- the photos. When you arrive, they take your picture, and later they come around offering prints--$35 for one, $50 for two. Sure, they come in a nice folder, but compared to another luau I attended that offered free digital downloads, this felt like a bit of a cash grab. A digital option would've gone a long way. Also, the parking- it was $12 ... seemed a little extra to have to pay to park in a large lot, attendees filled only 25% - and the rest of lot was empty... definitely felt like another money grab. If you've never been to a luau, this is a good introduction. As someone who's been to others on the island, I noticed a few spots where this one didn't quite measure up--but it still delivered an ok experience. Pro tip: Skip the more expensive seating upgrade. The venue is small enough that just about every seat has a decent view. Decent food, decent show, and an overall warm vibe. There were many Luaus that we had in mind, but we decided to go with Chief's instead for our first time in Hawaii and it was fantastic. The venue takes place at a water park and it was no less than 35min drive from Waikiki. We got the royal experience which came with front row seats, a unique lei, and free mai tais. The MC was pretty funny and clever on the mic. It was a fun night full of laughter and joy. It was interesting learning the Polynesian culture and watching the fire dance. Apparently, these guys are also gold winners of the fire dance competition, so you are getting the best entertainment. When the buffet was open, we quickly got in line and got hella food. If it's your first time in Hawaii, you need to check out a Luau. I don't make the rules. I've been to one or two as a kid but I definitely don't remember anything. Recently celebrated my bday in Hawaii with a few friends (some of their first time visiting) so we had to check it out. There were actually quite a few to choose from throughout Oahu but after reading reviews and just looking through social media from other people's experience we definitely chose the right one. It was fun and engaging. Going on stage was not on my bingo card but there were a lot people that went up so it wasn't that terrifying. Trying to pick the right one was key. There was one that was an all day thing but that felt inconvenient since we weren't visiting for long. Another luau had a great view but so many thoughts on the food being way below mid. So I'm glad we chose Chief's Luau because the timing and the food was decent/good. Plus drinks! Note, it's not the greatest view but not the worst.. just funny. They share the same area as the waterpark so that's pretty much the view in the back lol Bought tickets online and it went smoothly. There were tier prices which included more or less depending on which one you pick. Royal Experience, Paradise Experience, and Aloha Experience. We chose Paradise mainly for the seating but if you don't care too much about the extras and mostly thinking about the view, the Aloha view is not that far apart from Paradise view if you want to save some $$. When they warn you about traffic, they are not kidding!! They are not suggesting.. it's a must! Leave hours before no joke. We left somewhat early but still not early enough. We went on a Friday night so that explains the slow traffic. Let me just start off with saying I have been to multiple luau's not just on Hawaii, but other places as well. This has to be one of the best that I have attended. So for starters, the food was OK. You can tell it was definitely prepped and if we're honest, we all know we're not going there for a Michelin star rated meal. If you are going here with the intention on eating amazing great food you will be disappointed. The food was good, but that's just it good. Nothing crazy special about it, but it wasn't bad either. Their service was great as they all went out of their way to make sure you're taken care of. As for the location, it is a little offputting being inside of a waterpark, but they definitely make do with the space they have. We bought the upgraded packages for the six of us and I'm glad we did. We were able to sit right up front and it came with a couple extra perks as well. There really was no bad seat in the house so to speak. Now to the highlight of the show, which was the show. Like I mentioned, I have been to multiple luaus and the show was a smoke show in comparison to the other ones. Sure there are other luau's that are bigger, just like the one a little bit down the street who charges more, it is at a bigger location, caters to larger groups, caters to selling tourist trinkets, but the show was super lame. However, here at Chiefs the storytelling, and dancing were far superior in every which way to any luau I've ever been to. If you are going to attend a luau and you're not going to Chiefs, then frankly, you are missing out. I somewhat feel bad that you would not be able to experience this show. If you're coming from town, it is best to go during the weekend. The traffic heading there was bad I didn't want to miss anything so I left early to be there on time. The performances I seen was the best in any luau I have been to. Food could be better but not the worst I ate in luau buffet either. I had to come back for another Luau and I read up on this one and many people recommended this one. This review will compose of both the experience and the food, and I will tackle each one separately. Luau Experience: My party drove to the luau, so parking was simple and entering was simple as well. Parking was $11 cash only, so plan ahead for this. We arrived early, so we got to experience leaf weaving into the headbands as well as attempts at fire making by rubbing sticks together to create friction. When the luau started, Chief walked out and boy was he funny. He made numerous jokes throughout the whole luau and really knew how to interact with the crowd. At various times, he addressed the audience, which I did not experience in my last luau. Some people were also voluntold to get on stage and that was an experience to watch. The different dances we saw were amazing and I love the fire dance the most. Food: Honestly, the food was nothing special. I also read up on this and people did say the food was not the best. I can agree with them as well. The pork had no flavor and the chicken was just ok. The noodles were also ok as well. The only thing I liked was the fish, and usually I hate fish. The drinks you get with the luau package is either beer, wine, soda/water, or a mai tai. The Mai Tai was alright, but I opted to purchase a lava flow, which I throughly enjoyed. Overall, come for the luau experience but I recommend eating a bit before coming. Would come back again though to enjoy the luau experience. read more

The location is a bit off putting being in a water park but the stage and location is very pretty. Tue food was very tasty, my favorite being the chicken and dessert. The fish wasn't very good but the Mai ties made up for it. We paid for the paradise package and got great seats, a beautiful headband, and a nut lei. The show was amazing and the fire dancing astonishing. They even offer hotel pick up / drop off which was super nice, the driver and tour guide were very nice and well accommodating. I want to start off by saying every luau is different and unique in their own ways and you should definitely check out Chief's if you want to laugh-out-loud ALL NIGHT LONG ! We purchased our tickets about a month in advanced online and we were there on the Monday show right after Thanksgiving . We opted for the standard "Aloha" package since it was "off season" and I had a feeling it wouldn't be packed-- so lucky, cause I was right ! We had really good seats near the front middle where "paradise" package would have sat if the luau were full . We were greeted by MAI TAI's which you have to use one of your drink tickets for . (With the "aloha" package -- you one have one drink ticket) . This Mai tai itself was more on the juice side and served in a smaller "drink ticket" size, but still refreshing . We paid for another Mai Tai later at the bar and was surprised it was made in a larger cup and I actually tasted the alcohol in this one lol . If you're looking at "drink ticket" numbers when choosing a package, keep in mind you'll be getting a "drink ticket" cup . Activities were great ! My dad and hubby joined in on the fire making and won a flower headband that was pretty cute . My daughter and sister enjoyed the weaving class . Loved how all the employees are sooo welcoming and fun . They remembered us the entire night and kept pulling everyone on stage throughout the night to participate in the activities/show . Here's my buffet style food review-- CHAR SUI NOODLES-- pretty basic, but you can add your own soy sauce/hot sauce as they serve packaged condiments on the side . The pork was cut small and not as plentiful . I mean, noodles get the job done-- carb wise lol ASIAN STYLE SAUTÉED FISH-- my favorite bite of the night. The fish was cooked perfectly-- so flakey and the flavors were spot on . I went back for seconds with steamed white rice for this one ! CHICKEN-- felt like a soy braised chicken ! It was well seasoned and I enjoyed that it still had the skin-on for extra flavor . Wish the skin was more crisp tho . KALUA PORK-- I was a little disappointed cause it was very dry . This had potential for sure cause it was tasty, just need some dipping sauce or pork au ju ! TARO ROLLS-- fluffy and fun to eat ! Make sure you cut it open and spread some butter ! PINEAPPLE CAKE-- I was a little confused because I thought it was going to be an actual cake that was pineapple flavored, but it was just a plain vanilla cake served with fresh cut pineapple on the side lol . Still good ! I also tried the Lomi lomi, poi, and salad-- They were pretty mediocre at best . When going to luaus in general, I don't judge the food too hard because I'm there for the show . The show is what you're really paying for--the buffet food is just a bonus . Overall, the food was enjoyable and my family and I were happily satisfied ! I've only been to one other luau when I was visiting Maui-- The Old Lahaina Luau (which i absolutely adore) and I do love how that one tell's a story-- vs Chief's which is more of an educated comedy and geared towards making guests feel part of the show . I also do like that Chief's has an amazing fire show finale, where The Old Lahaina in Maui did not have any fire lol . I respect both because they offer different things ! This luau came highly rated on TripAdvisor and Yelp, and without much other guidance, we decided to give it a shot! It has its pros and cons, and since you have to experience a luau at least once in your lifetime, this one isn't bad! The setting is at a water park, which cheapens the entire feel of the luau. I will say that the only other luau I have been to was on a beach in Maui, so I recognize I had high expectations. Upon arrival, you check-in and are given your lei...different depending on the package you purchased. You are then free to mingle in the luau area until the show begins. There are crafting and other activities to keep you busy, or you can get yourself a drink and just chill. The food and drinks were a big win here. The Mai Tais, although a bit small, were DELISH and not light on the alcohol. We chose the two drink ticket package, which was a good amount for us, and we could have purchased additional if we wanted. The food was very yummy, especially for mass produced food for a large group. I will say that they advertise it as all you can eat, which it is...but the supplies aren't endless and once they run out, they stop putting out more food. The show was fun, yet times felt a bit generic! The Chief was very personable, funny, and talented. The whole cast really nailed their performances and treated you like family the entire night. The fire show at the end is worth all the money! Overall, a good choice for family and friends! I think the price is a bit steep for the experience, but it's comparable to other luaus we looked into. read more

I haven't been to a luau since I was little at the pcc and this was an experience at chiefs luau! Positive: - The entertainment was above and beyond. I love the commentary and humor. Also they do a great job taking you through all the islands with each performance. - Plenty of food so come hungry! - Yes it's at a water park BUT they have it set up really nice with a waterfall, greenery, trees, lights, etc - Affordable Cons: - Since the location is a bit higher, it does get cooler at night and I was not prepped so come with a light jacket especially during the winter season. - The check-in process was a little confusing so just come prepped with your tickets and type of ticket you purchased... and be patient :) Overall, it's a great luau with people that work hard to make it an amazing experience for you. Also if you stay on the west side, this is a short commute vs the majority of the other popular luaus. read more

Wonderful luau experience. This was my second luau, but my first at Chief's. This luau's food was very good (tasty fish and pulled pork, great noodles, delicious pineapple cake)! I have been to few luau's between this island and the big island. To be honest this is the first time I have walked out learning something new about the native culture and people from a chief. Like don't get me wrong every luau have their own fun things and experience. But the rest are always give you the generic vibes of it's made for tourist. This one was different we came and we enjoyed the music and the little activities before the dinner and the show starting. The dancers and the champions were just amazing and yes telling the story as well keeping the heritage alive and passing it on is something I have been wanting to feel and see and take with me for the rest of my life. Yes they need to have more options for the Gf as well DF people but I was happy to eat rice and salad even tho everyone else was enjoying everything else. Cuz honesty the Chief and everyone else made it special and made you feel you are literally in their village and you are they guest and they are hosting you. When my girlfriend picked this event for one of the days of our trip to Honolulu, I honestly thought we were coming to this show to see the culture of Hawaiians. I didn't expect to be this entertained. After the show was done, I was actually happy that we came. The show was held outdoors, so if you come in during the colder seasons, then I would recommend carrying a jacket or a sweater. The buffet provided that night was warm and delicious ! The hosts / entertainers of the show were lively by making lighthearted jokes and they engaged with the audience well. We had the opportunity to learn how to create fire from twigs (oh, this was hard, I only managed to create smoke then). Some of you who are courageous enough will have the opportunity to go up the stage to do a Hawaiian dance (this was funny and entertaining because learning dance moves and performing them on the spot while being watched by 50 people or so, what could go wrong ?) Overall, if you came to Honolulu to experience Hawaiian culture, then Chief's Luau should definitely be in your top things to do here! It's worth every penny ! read more

Found recommendations for Chiefs and wow was everyone right! They did an awesome job from entertainment, food, & drinks. The show was unbelievable. We did upgrade to the Royal package and it was worth every penny. Got a fresh flower lei, extra drink tickets and a perfect seat for the show. Had a small group of 6 and no-one was disappointed. I even bought a sweatshirt at the end and it's the most comfortable sweatshirt!! read more

Do not think twice about booking this experience. To start they open it up with all kinds of activities such as trying to start a fire, getting a Hawaiian style tattoo. Also got to weave headbands out of coconut leaves. They have sliced coconuts as well. The food was buffet style and something for everyone and it was all delicious. The show in itself was worth the price. You will be entertained the whole time. Then they will take you through the Polynesian islands. You get tribe dances and ladies during their hulas. Of course the fire dance was incredible. Chief ran the show the whole time and was entertaining and knew how to tell the story of their culture. 10/10 recommended. read more
