Chief, you're HILARIOUS! If you enjoy: -good food -good drinks -funny Chief (MC) -outstanding ocean views ...check this luau out! It might not be anywhere near Honolulu, but you'll be glad to make the drive over here. Cheaper luau tickets get cheaper shell leis, "baller" tickets get the nicer kukui ones. Slight segregation happening, but the views from every table are good! The grass area where the guests sit is patchy, the bathrooms are similar to restroom areas for national parks (you know what I mean)... and there are flies that will hover over your food. But for the ambiance and a birthday AND engagement celebration for friends, this was definitely a good way to end the night for our group of 10 :) SPOILER: They have a spear throwing contest on the side of the grass after dinner! A luau was on my hubby's must-do list, and it's one I probably wouldn't want to do again. Not that this particular luau was terrible or anything... just, it's not something I'd like to do again and it wasn't the most memorable event of our trip. With that said, Chief's Luau gets a high rating because it was engaging and they put on a good show. Located at Sea Life Park, the luau is held at a large, open grassy area with views of Makapu'u Beach, Makapu'u Lighthouse, and Manana Island State Bird Sanctuary, which is conveniently used as the backdrop for their $20 group photo with Chief Sielu. The gates opened at 4:30. Upon arrival, you are greeted with shell leis, take the photo with the chief, are assigned seating (according to the type of ticket you purchased), and then are free to engage in one of their activities for about an hour. The activities include spear-throwing, facial airbrush tattooing, making fire, and more. There was a brief unveiling of the cooked pig, and, if you're short like I am, make sure you try to find a spot at the very front because the crowd that gathers is fairly big and you won't see the presentation. After, different sections are allowed to line up and get food, which is served on a very long buffet-style table. There was a good variety of food: salad, poi, pork, fish, taro rolls, and more. Need seconds and thirds? They had plenty leftovers. The show itself was entertaining. There was the usual showcasing of the traditional dance styles of the islands. What I found very odd was Chief Sielu cracked some of the same jokes that was said by a Samoan at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Because we had gone to the center just the night before, the jokes were still fresh in my mind. Not sure if it was just coincidence or if it was such a common joke (like the coconut milk being their version of 7UP), but the timing and execution just seemed beyond coincidental. Don't wanna ruin the show with details of what went on... so go and experience it for yourself. Chief Sielu is and always will be the bomb. Food however was catered in and was pretty terrible. It was cold in the pan. The chicken satay was not cooked all the way through. Literally pink which IDK how you can do that with small pieces of chicken. The fat on the chicken was like they just took it out of the bag and defrosted it. You could tell it was marinated and then shoved in a pan and put in an oven or maybe just a warmer?! haha The fruit salad was starting to get soggy. Kalua pig was cold and if you don't know... The stuff can sour real quick... Especially when prepared by hand. The fish was good. LOTS of poi which was to be expected and watered down a bit. Mash potatoes were good for being out of a box. and NO poke as the other guy said there was. The seating was terrible. There were the VIP people who paid $$$$ to sit in front. They either ran out of room for them or just the seating was too tight?! Also you are given a table number to sit on... NO ONE follows it. You had people just staking out places on tables they weren't even assigned to all over the place. We ended up just sitting on a back table to be away from all that madness. A couple of arguments broke out over seating. That would be the administrators fault for not having any measures in place to regulate the seating. The Polynesian staff was the best part. The show was engaging and entertaining. They were polite and friendly. You know how it gets with tourists.... But they were genuine in who they represented and came across as patient and all around good guys. I would probably check out Fia Fia instead of this one if you love Chief Sielu. I got 2 adult standard package tickets from the hawaiidiscount site that other yelpers recommended, which turned out to be around $68/ticket (original price is $80), and it worked out great. We wanted a luau with good food, enjoyable activities that wouldn't take up our whole day, and entertainment, and that's what we got. The activities were fun. There was spear-throwing, stencil tattoos, fire-making, making head pieces out of tree leaves (forgot what kind of leaves), and of course a short hula lesson. The food was okay, nothing to rave about but we were already expecting that. They had a buffet of chopped salad, taro bread rolls, kalua pork, fish with macadmia nuts, chicken skewers, rice, and fruit. You also get a ticket for 1 free drink of your choosing from a mai tai, wines, beers, or soda. The entertainment was the best part. The chief is very engaging and HILARIOUS (so if you fear getting picked on, embarrassed, or put on the spot, beware of this luau) and the hula dancing and fire dancing was amazing. My bf and I did this our first night just to kind of get the whole luau experience out of the way. They did a great job at making sure the line went smoothly & we weren't waiting in a long line. Games & activities before the luau started were fun. Show was entertaining! We had the opportunity to experience Chief's Luau last night. Needless to say it was one of the most fun and entertaining cultural experiences we've had on the island thus far. If you get one of the higher tier packages, you can get in early and see the sharks, fishes, and large sea turtles. You are then greeted with either a flower, beaded, or seashell lei and invited to find your seat. Then the activities begin. You can learn how to weave with coconut leaves, throw spears, play a traditional Polynesian game, or hula dance among other things. After activities the pig is removed from the ground, dinner is served. The food was okay. But working in the service industry I know it's difficult to do buffet food well. The cake that was served for dessert was really yummy. So yummy I ate my boyfriends slice too. In between the dinner and the main show, we had the opportunity to check out some of the local artisanal work, which my brother in law commented was cheaper than other locations on the island (especially the whale bone jewelry). We picked up a few cool pieces for ourselves. The main show began shortly after. A few adjectives to describe it: memorable, entertaining, funny, beautiful, exciting, and connected. I was immediately overwhelmed with a deep appreciation for the culture they were sharing with us. The chief himself is highly entertaining. He had me laughing the entire night. I love a good luau in Hawaii, however this one was just okay. Reservations required, but simple to make online, we chose the Aloha experience and it was perfect. We took an uber there (wanted to drink & not drive) and it was easy to get in & get seated. Your admission comes with one drink ticket per person, but the bar closes early so keep that in mind. The food was eh, typical luau food however the Chief was hysterical & kept the crowd laughing ALL night long. Loved the activities prior to the start of the actual show, plus all the ladies & gentlemen helping were nice & made the experience fun! I did tons of research on which was the best luau on oahu and I was not disappointed. I chose the royal package but really I think any package is fine as they are all pretty close to the stage. We got to see the sharks, dolphin, and turtles at the park with our package. The leis are high class. I was offered alot of leis for alot of events in oahu and these were the best. All shell, wood beads, and flower leis Are high quality. Chief is a great entertainer with a good heart. He loves what he does. The dancers are fantastic and they try to get alot of people involved in his shows. I read from reviews that food was going to stink so I prepared for that. Not sure what everyone Is taking about!! I tried hawaiian pork all over the island and this was by far the best!! Also they had amazing pineapple cake and chicken. The fish was dry so I didn't like it but that's about it. My main concern about this luau is the drinks. This was going to be the one night I drank on our trip and I'm I didn't even feel a thing. I think they barely put any in the Mai tais. I am the type that seldom ever drinks so one wine cooler and I'm full on tipsy. I had three "Mai tais" in an hour and felt nothing. I had one Mai tai on a booze cruise and was pretty tipsy the next day so these are too weak. I heard alot of people at our table complaining about that. And I understand you don't want people at a luau getting trashed but don't charge $7 for a 4oz (yes 4 oz ) Mai tai with nothing in it. So maybe drink before hand if you like to drink. This was my very first luau, so I didn't really know what to expect. I thought that it was going to be one of those overrated, cheesy experiences, but it was so much more than expected. The dancers were really good - both the women and men, loved the fire dance. They had great pre-show activities - definitely get there early! You can get tattoos, create a head piece, learn how to start a fire, etc. If you are easily offended, you might not enjoy his jokes, but I thought the Chief was really funny and entertaining! He really made the show amazing. The luau was outdoor at Sea Life Park, which was also a beautiful setting. The show started at 5PM and we ended leaving around 8/8:30PM. Parking is easy, but there is a small fee for it. You can also take a bus from Waikiki if you don't have a car for a fee as well. We had the Royal experience tickets, which gives you front row seating and more drink tickets. We had great seats and you get to skip the lines when checking in when you have the Royal tickets so don't stand in line with everyone else! I would highly recommend checking out Chief's Luau if you are visiting Oahu. read more

I was skeptical of this from the start, but it wore me down and grew on me. By the end of the night, I was dancing under the stars with my boyfriend and all smiles. What's seems to be hardest about this (or any) luau is the commercialization of it all. Everything just felt fake to me at the start - staged and set up to make money. While I know that's the goal of any business venture, I don't necessarily want to explicitly see it happening. But if you put all those reservations aside and just enjoy it, you'll have fun. The food buffet was OK, but I'd especially heap on the pork next time since it was the best meat of the bunch. And a shout out to the yummy almond-y cake for dessert. This luau is especially nice for kids - they've got games set up throughout the night - and it caters to adults with a strong performance by the chief himself. First time at Luau and this one was everything I was hoping for and more. Our host Cho (Sho) was funny and friendly and made us feel welcome. He took time to get all of our opinions and I could tell he was truly wanting us to have a good time. Before the luau there was opportunity to make crowns or throw spears or to look around. They told us how they cook pig and stories of Polynesian culture. The food was wonderful. I enjoyed the pork and chicken. There was enough for different tastes. The entertainment was wonderful. Chief was funny and kept us entertained. The dancers were all wonderful. The fire dance was the show stopper. I like the story of different Polynesian cultures and their dances. I was moved by his gesture to couples in audience and his personal story of his parents. A little girl from make a wish was there and they made her feel so special. This was my very first luau in Hawaii (Sunday 7/29) and I am quite glad it was Chief's Luau. Chief Sielu has an incredibly entertaining sense of humor (although sometimes very suggestive!) and I would definitely think about bringing family with me on our next trip! A couple of details: Schedule: We opted for the Paradise Seating, so we sat relatively close to the stage. However, it was such an intimate setting (~100 ppl) that all seats were pretty good. Here's what we had in the Paradise package: - brief tour of Sea Life Park to see the sharks, turtles, dolphins - welcome greeting with nuts lei - picture with the Chief (you can purchase these for $20) - hangout time: make palm tree leaf crowns, get temporary tattoo, make fire!, learn hula dance - 1st tables to buffet line - watch performances! Food: - excellent salad dressing - great lomi lomi that went amazingly well with the pork - sweet potato and yam are a good base - good roasted vegetables - fish was only ok, a bit dry (perhaps supposed to eat with the marmalade sauce, but I do not like marmalade) - chicken satay was cooked through and delicious! - skip the punch, not very memorable or rather diluted - mai tai's were very weak, as the bartender(s) only drizzled a bit of light and dark rums. they don't make the drinks any differently between free drink tickets and paid drinks - amazing dessert cake! - coffee and tea to keep you warm and awake as it gets dark and chilly Overall, the program was great. It would have been nice if the beginning wasn't as slow and the end wasn't so chock full of exciting performance after another, considering we'd had a couple of drinks, along with punch, water, coffee, tea. To be fair, the Chief did designate a short time for us to use the restrooms (which I used, but still needed to go again later). The music and singing was beautiful, the performances were great, a couple of groups of people were picked on (it was entertaining), the Chief had a dedication time for anniversary couples, and he was all around pretty hilarious. The best part is the crazy fire performance at the end!!! I'd highly recommend Chief's Luau. He's honest about his heritage and his family and it's just a genuine place to be a part of. I decided to attend the luau on the last night of my vacation as a way to top it off, and I'm so glad I did! Best way to end a great vacation. It was my first luau and first time in Hawaii so I honestly had no idea what to expect. My boyfriend and I took the shuttle to the luau, which was great because the guide was very entertaining and gave us some fun facts and stories about Hawaii! Or you could take a short nap on the shuttle like my boyfriend did... Before the luau starts, there's activities for everyone to participate in like headband weaving, spear throwing, even a short hula lesson for the ladies! Unfortunately, we didn't get there early enough to go through all the activities. From the luau location, you get a great view of the ocean and mountains behind you but unfortunately you will not be getting the sunset, which really would've topped the whole experience. The food is buffet style, and is alright. You got your kalua pork, poi, mahi mahi, and etc. Nothing too crazy to rave about. But something I CAN rave about is the show itself! The Chief was HIGH-LARIOUS! He's so funny and it's great when your audience participates and plays along with him. The fire dancers, the hula dancers, and all the other performances were amazing! This was an amazingly entertaining time! The activities were great from making braided headpiece to learning how to hula. The food was delicious and traditional. Poi, taro bread, chicken, mahi mahi, pork, rice, salad, sweet yams. The entertainment was simply unbeatable! Impossible to be bored. Tips: -we got standard package as there were no others left and still had great seating and perks. Best way to end our honeymoon!! We loved Cheif's Luau! We were picked up from the Kahala Hotel for the show. The bus was on time and our driver was amazing and funny! He played the uke while waiting for passengers to load on - he's so talented! Cousin Lee was our host on the bus and he was amazing as well!! He was super informative and also funny (more on him later!). We got the Royal package, which was definitely worth it. We skipped the long lines and got our mai tai's right away! There were lots of activities to choose from before the show started. We did the headband weaving and the tattoos! We loved how authentic and nice the performers were. The scenery was breath-taking. We were off the coast with such a beautiful view of the ocean - it was truly magical! The Royal package also had us get the food first, which was awesome! We loved the show and the variety it contained. We got a taste of the Polynesian culture and the Chief was so funny, yet informative in presenting it all! There was a moment when he called up the honeymooners, and that was the most special part of it all. Cousin Lee was at the foot of the stage, so we asked if he could record our time up there with our GoPro. He captured the most memorable part where we danced under the moonlight, while surrounded by fire dancers and live music. This was my first luau in Hawaii and I had a blast. Chief Sielu is one funny person and he makes sure everyone has a good time. The scenery was beautiful and the food was good (especially the pulled pork). The taro roll was so good! The only thing I regret is not getting the royal package. The luau was relatively full and my paradise seating was all the way in the back, so I couldn't see the stage. I had to stand up to see the show, which was fine with me. This was a really good luau. We drove in from Waikiki and the drive was beautiful along the coast. The location is awesome, right next to the ocean, in Sealife Park. The set up was intimate and there was no bad seat in the house. The food was good for mass produced food and they had a lot of activities for both children and adults before the show. I've been to Germaine's and Paradise Cove and it was better than both of them. Although it was similar to Paradise Cove but more intimate and more personal attention. The Chief was funny the whole time and the dancing was great. They didn't have the coconut bra grass skirt dancers though which I thought was unusual. Go before they get all successful and crowded! We were to receive a free photo with our royal ticket, or at least that is what was advertised 2 months prior when I made reservations. They took photo, for free, but then wanted $30 for photo. I am handicap and the walking about killed me, to dinner, to bathroom, to het food, to car. Walk yourself to death. Royal tickets got us a flower Lei that will die, it's fresh flowers. But people who paid way less for regular tickets gor black beads as a souvenir. We got a white towel as a gift. Not sure why. Food was okay. Show was good. But I am mad about photo, all the walking, and no beads. read more

Great luau! Have attended Germaine's luau a few times in the past, thought I'd give Chief's luau a try. The Chief's luau location is beautiful, next to Sea Life Park (which we had been to previously), as compared to Germaine's which is located in an industrial lot close to a beach but still nice tho. They have pre show activities for kids and grown ups which we all enjoyed that Germaine's doesn't offer. Staff was friendly at both luau's tho I think Germaine's staff was a tad bit more accommodating and professional. At the start of Chief's luau one of the young staff members was passing out plastic poncho's (had drizzled a bit but cleared, didn't really need them), to those who wanted them. She seemed frustrated and annoyed, overwhelmed by the people. Not a happy camper. Also, the photo part seemed unorganized and confusing to the older folk. Food and drinks at Chief's luau where average at best. The food lines seemed to take longer here and food wasn't replenished as fast as Germaine's. Food didn't seem as fresh and abundant with less choices too. The Mai Tai's could have used a little kick a swell. To Flask or not to flask? Hint, hint. The Chief's luau edges all other luau's I've attended in the past, in the "Show/entertainment" category. Hands down a great show. The Chief himself does a wonderful job entertaining. The fire dance performers and live music are unbelievable! So just an FYI and probably not a deal breaker but as mentioned, Chief's luau is next to Sea Life Park. The park appeared to be closed at our arrival time about 5pm, thus gift shops also closed. If you where to attend the luau unprepared and or the weather was to change or rain and had to buy a light sweater, dry shirt, a toy, nick nack for a restless tired child that will keep them happy, well something to think about. They do have a small gift shop at the Germaine's lua that's open. Sure it's not cheap but a lifesaver, this from past experience. Chief's luau is still new and will improve I'm sure. A new work in progress. As said before, this luau edges all other commercial luau's in Oahu in the "entertainment/show category", IMHO. I really don't understand all the positive reviews. I am embarrassed that we got suckered into this tourist trap. Bad food served on elementary school styrofoam trays, poorly made drinks, and only water and juice available for non-alcoholic options. If you are an adult couple skip this and go out to a nice dinner. If you have young kids, they may enjoy it, but the adults will suffer unless your idea of a good time is to get drunk on cheap, cheap drinks and watch a ridiculous show that the local Hawaiians should be embarrassed to be putting on. Oh, and the "mini tour" of the water park was them basically walking you past the turtles, dolphins, and beluga whales at a hurried pace. If you haven't ever seen any of these creatures, then it may impress you to watch them for a minute, but to us, it really wasn't anything special at all. Best Luau on the island. Extremely entertaining and a little perverted (in a funny way). Me and my girlfriend had an amazing time and laughed until we cried several occassions. It is a highly engaging show. The setting was an intimate one as even the "cheap" tickets had a great view of the performances. To top it off, you have a beautiful view overlooking the ocean. Food isn't anything special, but I didn't expect much at Luaus. Couple of highlights are the pulled pork and the cake at the end. Those were the best but it is a typical catering type of set up(how else would you be able to feed 200+ people?) As to why he may be not as popular as the other Luaus? It's because he just started 4 months ago. He will be the most popular Luau if he keeps it up. Chief's Luau was a great evening. Chief Sielu is so funny and is amazing during the fire show. Overall, the show was great. We were laughing the whole night. The dancing was great and the fire show was so good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They do the whole roasted pig ceremony which was pretty cool as well. The food is buffet style and they had green salad, fruit salad, rice, mashed potatoes, pork, chicken, and fish..There was also cake. The view is amazing! You have the mountains and the ocean to look at, bring your camera. I'd suggest bringing a sweater it can get a little chilly. They do take your picture with the Chief, it will cost you $20 if you want a copy of the picture. Some packages include the picture, ours did not. We got there at 4:30 and I would recommend walking around Sea Life before going over to the luau, once you're at the luau you'll forget about walking around Sea Life. read more

GREAT entertainment! The chief really engaged the crowd and is hilarious. Lots of included and fun activities prior to the start of the show. We bought the Royal seats with no regrets, but there really is no need. All the seats in the house are good and you end up getting up to get your own drinks either way. Negatives: Food is bland and really not enjoyable. The shuttle service is quite disorganized. We spent way too much time on the bus, way too many pickup spots and spent entirely too much time waiting to leave after the show. The buses are old and lacking hydraulics and our particular bus had some sort of warning alarm sounding all the way home that he continually silenced. Even with the negatives, the show is so powerfully entertaining. Epic evening and worth all the negatives. read more

Normally I don't write reviews, but I had to!! This was so fun!!!! We got the royal package. If your on a budget, the lowest one would still be great! If your debating between the higher two- go Royal!! We were front and center, it was awesome!! There's lots of great souvenirs to buy there! So bring some extra money. All the activities are really fun. I liked the buffet, I mean it's a luau don't expect 5 star meal- but it's great w a lot of options! And I have to say our bus escort Kale/Charlie was so nice!! Yes, 5 stars! Went there today with my family as a finale activity for our first visit to Hawaii. TripAdvisor lists this as the number 1 Luau show in Hawaii, and I agree 100%. I also believe that this puts a responsibility on the shoulders of the Chief's Luau management to keep maintaining that ranking and keep those 5-star reviews coming. So, here is the breakdown for the 5 stars: - a star for excellent customer service; a very professional customer service that guarantees winning their customers' loyalty - a star for quality of entertainment; cultural dancing, singing, group activities, fire shows, etc., these people have put a significant amount of effort into the entertainment program of the visit from the minute you arrive there, and they also haven't forgotten to have something for the kids - a star for location; the show is held at the Sea Life Park, which is located on the northern shore of the island of O'Ahu on a hill overlooking the beautiful scenic view of the ocean - a star for the dinner buffet; I came to realize that I'm not a big fan of Hawaiian food, but I must say that the food here tasted more "onolicious" than what I've tried elsewhere - a star for the spirit; you will notice that the people there love what they do and they do it with sincerity and joy; in other words, everyone there will make sure you are leaving feeling happy That's it folks! read more

This was my first luau experience. We got the Royal package which included front row seating, 3x ticket drinks, your choice of lei and table service instead of buffet style. Definitely an entertaining! The host will keep you laughing the whole night with the exception of some innuendo but still good for the whole family! For dinner you're served a small salad then followed by with a plate of fish, kulua pork and chicken skewers with rice, roasted veggies and a taro roll. For dessert, they serve white cake. The show was amazing, taking you through all the different dances of different islands from Fuji, Tonga, Samoa, New Zealand and of course Hawaii. It was nice to see all the different outfits and styles of the islands. I would definitely recommend the show! A must go to place to be entertained for the night. It was an entertaining, funny, and story like luau very interesting. There are many hands on crafts before the luau that helps you learn more about the cultures. The food was different not pizza and hamburgers guys remember this is there culture so don't be expecting steak and lobster dinners. I definitely recommend this place if you either had a bad experience at another luau or for a first time you'll be impressed. read more

Went to Chief's Luau in June, our first time, booked through Vive hotel. I would recommend it but consider the following: -Shuttle was late -Super rushed once we arrived -Felt rushed eating -Poured rain for about 15 mins. I have attended many Luau on Oahu, this by far was the best ever. Great entertainment, great food and you could go up for seconds. Drinks were reasonable, atmosphere Electric. Anyone that puts down this luau is just being a negative Nancy (I don't even know if they are, I'm just stressing that before you read any other review ) THIS IS BY FAR A MUST DO in Hawaii! I've been so grateful for my life experiences, and this is up there with Cirque dU Soleil stuff when it comes to how thoughtful and creative the show is put together. GO! The MC was hilarious, authentic, and sweet. The music was astounding. The performers were breathtaking! Even the cheesy crowd participation part was great haha. If you're celebrating love, it's a must do for sure!! The food was delicious and I recommend splurging for the package that lets you try the roasted pig (we didn't and I regretted it but also...budget...) It is WORTH the cost!
