I went to this non-profit center and food bank Wednesday, April 3, 2019. This building is located…read morenext to a school. They have small parking a lot (no handicapped spaces, by the way), which was full because one car was not parked correctly and took up two spaces. I saw someone else access the place by pulling by the center using the school parking, but there is a sign it is only for school personnel during the day, so I was weary of that. Instead, I parked on the street, which was a little difficult, since there are like literally 10 feet piles of snow still in South Lake Tahoe, even though it was April! WTF? I used to live in the snow-belt of upstate New York, and by April there was only a little bit of snow. When I went in, the office was empty, as they were having a meeting in the backroom. A lower-ranking worker, who was outside bringing in the pallets of food, was nice, telling me to go to the back room, and also apologizing for blocking the entry way. He also sneaked me extra bread at the end. The other employee who came out of the meeting was super friendly, and showed me what to do. It is very informal there. There was no line. You just walk in and you can take one pre-made bag of commodities, and whatever bread and other items they have on the shelf by the kitchen. There are no forms or verifications required. Their website said they only had USDA commodities (food) beginning on the second Friday of the month until they run out, but I guess they must have changed that. In the office there were all kinds of brochures about other services offered in the community. This location also offers English language classes, parenting classes, and a clothing bank, and runs a used book store called The Bookworks, at the mall in South Lake Tahoe. Such an amazing program/ non profit with very experienced caring and thoughtful staff . Both instructors I had ( Heather and Jo ) were wonderful! Both instructors read through my file and tailored my adaptive snowboarding lesson so that I would be able to really get the most out of the experience with my multiple physical impairments. I loved and especially appreciated how patient both instructors were. Collectively, they both enabled me to have not only a really good time, but they ultimately helped me to reclaim confidence in myself and my ability to participate in a new sport , something that I thought would not be possible post the onset of multiple chronic lifelong degenerative joint diseases. Please support this wonderful program by signing up for lessons and or activities. They run both winter and summer programming. You can also support this nonprofit by donating directly to them and or attending one of their fundraising events including an annual gala that they usually host in May as well as this summer they are hosting a wine tasting event!

I could easily say that this 5-star review is also for the organization itself since they've been doing so much great work for decades to protect and clean up the lake, educate the community, and support pretty much every positive environmental effort and initiative that affects Lake Tahoe! But back to the new shop & headquarters that just opened 3-4 months ago. My husband & I dropped by recently to check it out and were very impressed by their beautiful new space! Not just a store, but also an education & training space. They even have a beautiful outdoor space set up like a small amphitheater and learning/gathering space. Inside the store you'll find all the great "Keep Tahoe Blue" merchandise that they also sell via their online store. From shirts to hats to gifts to glasswares to various home goods, and more! They even have their own branded yoga mat and coffee beans! We picked up a new snowboarding neck gaiter and a few gifts, including the Lake Tahoe themed Monopoly board game! Proceeds all go to support the nonprofit of course, so it's even better knowing that you're supporting such a great cause and giving back to Lake Tahoe. Definitely worth a visit for locals and visitors alike! Visitors: you'll find some unique souvenirs here too! Let's all help keep Tahoe blue and beautiful!

Gift store hours vary!! I was looking for the keep Tahoe…read moreblue stickers & not many gift shops had them but we stumbled upon this place and they had some cute keep Tahoe blue merch. The only think we noticed though was that the gift shop is only opened Thursday-Saturday starting at 12pm. Not sure if that's the same time for the museum. This was a cute little place to stop at for a few minutes though!

The historical Mottsville Cemetery matches much of the history of the pioneer history of the Carson…read moreValley.  This Cemetery is hidden in plain sight and can be found by taking the first left (after the rusted out truck) after coming down the Kingsbury Grade. Follow Old Foothill for several blocks and soon you can't miss it on the left. Park your car, open the pedestrian gate and have a walk around like I did. I found a solitary and meandering stroll to be best as I silently made out names, dates, and possibly circumstances. The sandy Mottsville Cemetery sits in the Sierra foothills with dozens of old year-old wind-beaten trees shading the graveyard floor.  Many family stories lie beneath those branches, with grave markers going back to the mid-1800s.  Some graves are marked and some are not, which in the later case makes you wonder. While looking at the markers, old family names show up: Lampe, Brockliss, Van Sickle, Biaggi, Dressler, and more.  Intertwined relationships at one time earned this area the name of "Cousins Valley" of which branches of these families exist here today.  There was once a Mottsville town in this area, which was named after settler Hiram Mott and was founded along the Emigrant Trail around the same time as nearby Genoa. It was one of the stops along the trail to the California Gold Fields and maybe Virginia City in the other direction.  The cemetery itself was established around 1854 when a Mott family member died as a child.  The Mottsville Cemetery Association maintains the grounds and coordinates any burials. They also sponsor clean-up days, as weeds and pine needles are part of the landscape here. Local residents (for example, Laurie Hickey) occasionally offer tours, which really brings the history of the cemetery and their families to life.  You may also see flags placed on the graves of veterans who served their country on our behalf.
