Chile Loco is a must stop for me in the Highlands-Cashiers area. It's a local family owned authentic Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Cashiers. The restaurant features booth, table, and bar seating. We opted for the bar, which has 6-8 seats (I think some are added as needed). My go to drink is their house sangria. Delicious, fruity, and made to order! The margaritas are incredibly popular and have heard rave reviews from some trusted margaritas aficionados. The thing you must try. And when I tell you must try, please factor in I have thought about this everyday since our last visit 4 months ago. (Not local to NC). TORTILLA SOUP. It is perfection. Simple. The broth is warm and spicy, but not hot spicy. The tortillas are fresh and crispy. How are they crispy in a soup?! Not sure but it's amazing. And topped with some fresh avocado. A nice creamy addition. While I have had (and love) the tamales. Our go to is the carne asada tacos. We like the Mexican style, just tortillas with the meat of your choice topped with onions and cilantro. They are served with a hot sauce and salsa verde. I came about 3:30 in the afternoon with my dog. It took a while for me to be waited on outside. I inquired about the dinner plates and what was available was enchiladas mole. Perfect. I didn't order chips and salsa since that is an up charge. Besides, I don't eat very many. They have a choice of black beans or refried. I chose the refried. The enchiladas were very good and the mole sauce a little spicy! I loved it. While the service was spotty, the food was very good. I'll be back here during my trip. read more

We ordered the salsa and chips, which yes, are often free elsewhere, but they were fresh thick cut chips and better than freebie ones. We ended up stopping by Chile Loco at the recommendation of a friend. I will tell you: it was PACKED! I always take this as a good sign. We did have a bit of a wait for a table, but it was worth it as everyone we saw dining there seemed to be really enjoying their meals. We were a table of 5. We ordered the tacos, the beef & chicken fajitas with a side of rice and refried beans, the nachos fajitas, the ground beef nachos and a cubana. All were fresh & delicious! This is a quiet restaurant in Cashiers. The staff are friendly and food is made to order. There is a bar in side and also a small space to sit outside if you want to enjoy the mountain air, the servings are very adequate and comes out hot. There is also a nice variety to chose from. We enjoyed a margarita, they make their own mix. Was light on the Tequila but still good. We have been twice now and the food is consistent. The lines were crazy and there was no parking in any of the two other restaurants for lunch. We decided we were going to go for the good stuff, Mexican. I'm Hispanic so I can tell you. But here's the kicker -- when my parents went in for the refund on an item they were promised over the phone, they accused them of making it up, then said never come back we don't want to deal with "people like you." Honestly never experienced anything like that. I was shocked to see $160 for the one pitcher! I showed the manager the menu, she agreed it was confusing. She said the tequila we chose was more expensive, "that it was top shelf" (her words exactly) which I agreed and explained that our $39 pitcher per their own menu should NOT cost $160! She was disinterested in any discussion, seemed to agree the menu was misleading, but would not make any adjustments. So the "cheap Mexican night" was almost as expensive as our previous dinners at Winslow's and the Orchard! I will do my best to discourage any/all my Cashiers visiting friends to AVOID CHILI LOCO. White queso was yummy! Had the special fajitas with chicken, beef, and shrimp. I would have liked more green peppers in the mix. The beef was quite fatty, but once I cut a few pieces, it was very tender and delicious. The rice kinda lacked flavor, but the beans were pretty good. I even scooped some on my fajitas! We usually skip the two Mexican restaurants in Highlands to go to Chile Loco in Cashiers even though we live in Highlands. The food here is excellent, affordable and the staff is very welcoming. Today I had the grilled chicken guacamole salad. Delicious! Sophia had the chicken fajitas and thoroughly enjoyed it. The great thing about this restaurant is that they have lots of daily lunch specials 7 days a week. We have tried many of the dishes here and they all have been expertly prepared. The complementary chips and salsa are not greasy like other Mexican restaurants. The owners claim they serve "authentic" Mexican food and I believe they hit the mark. The interior is very colorful and festive. Don't be put off by the strip shopping center. There are two other very good restaurants here and it sits on the fringe of Cashiers. A combination of great food, attentive service, friendly atmosphere and fair prices earns Chile Loco 5 stars. read more

The placed seemed clean and nice when we walked in. As we sat down, we asked for chips and he told us it would cost $5. I have been to Mexican restaurants all over Florida and Georgia and North Carolina and have never had to pay for an order of chips as they are always complimentary. But nonetheless we still got the chips. The worst part is paying for the chips, and the chips being the worse tasting chips I've ever tasted, alongside a small bowl of canned salsa that was enough for maybe three chips. Having eaten my fair share of Mexican food in CA and AZ, Chile Loco is now in my top-five favorite restaurants. We tried the bean dip and nachos to share as starters. The bean dip had whole black beans (not refried), along with a light cheese and salsa...it was extremely good, not too heavy, and a great starter. The nachos (albeit not light inherently) were excellent as well. As for entrees, our table was fortunate with what we ordered. The fajitas were fresh and light, the burrito was very good, and the camarones a la diabla very good as well.
