Can't say I've experienced a takeout spot this rich in flavor, consistency and quality... my usual go to has been sesame chicken combo with shrimp fried rice, sooooo good and quick service!! It's a little bit pricier than most takeout spots I've been to, but makes sense for the portions they give and like I said quality is just amazing. Staff is super friendly and while you wait they have complimentary oolong tea to the right of the counter . I suggest getting the wonton soup or hot and sour both of which is also distinctly tasteful. Being such a great takeout spot sometimes you just can't wait to dive in so there is ample space for dining within but at times can be crowded due to its popularity. I don't know why this place was rated so high. The food was not that great. I've eaten a lot of Chinese food and I must say I have eaten much better. I live in the area and based on the reviews I had to try it and boy I was disappointed. I'm sorry to the other yelpers who rated this place high and it's only pricey. I ordered the lunch specials which was bean curd with white rice, General Tsao's chicken, and chicken lo mein. It came with soup which I chose wonton, egg drop, and hot and sour soups. The bean curd was spicy and I told them not to season it spicy. I guess the guy who took my order did not listen or maybe he did not understand. When my mom ate it she kept on coughing because it was that spicy and saucy. The lo mein was very greasy that you can see the coat of oil covering the food. The fried rice tasted old and reheated. The General Tsao's chicken was very greasy and the sauce was thick. The egg drop soup was bland and color was nearly white. Overall, I would not come back here. It's one and done for me at this place. If I had a dog and would not feed him this food. Yikes. read more

I have been going here for +35 years since I was a young child. The best Chinese food in the world! They are expensive compared to most other chinese places. However this is a true case of "You get what you pay for". IMHO Their signature dish is the Chicken w/ Broccoli. This is one of my top 3 meals in life of all time to order, hands down! You know they are good when this place is hidden behind a Best Buy with minimal signs and it is still in business decades later. I think every other shop around it has changed except the the great "China Cafe". Service is great, the same family runs after all these years,..they are the best and super friendly. In all my years going there they have never made a mistake on one of my orders,.... ever! They take great pride in what they cook and how efficiently they serve it. Been going here for years..nothing choice sometimes and others by default due to the proximity of their location to my old house. I actually just had some boneless spare ribs last night with shrimp fried rice, which were Uber on point!! It tasted very clean, meaning it wasn't too greasy! It was also fresh, but a bit on the expensive side. Yet you get what you pay for. I would go back, and they've definitely improved since the last time I went there, because the general tsao (sorry if I misspelled that) that I've had in the past always seemed to miss the mark. The egg foo young is pretty on point though. Can't comment on the Lo mein since it's been a while since I had theirs, but ultimately I would suggest checking them out if you're in the area. read more

One of the better American style Chinese food spots in the area, although they do have some traditional Chinese dishes and soups. Seems better to call ahead and place your order. Picked up my phone order around 7:30 and they were busy on a Monday night. Prices are about the same as competitors. Food tastes good and not too oily on most dishes I've tried. The fried baby shrimp are good if you add a side of sweet and sour sauce ($1. Extra). I also enjoyed the Chinese style beef stew noodle soup, tastes like the one I get in NYC. Ordered by chance since it was nearby where I was shopping and Im glad I did! The wonton soup and dumplings were great! The cold sesame noodles were good as well but I stupidly didn't realize they were spicy, at no fault of the restaurant, I just didn't pay attention. But the service here is astounding! When I called the gentleman I spoke to made it a point to make sure I knew exactly where the restaurant was located. They quoted me a 10 min wait time and was ready right when I got there. After 2 months of being closed, China Cafe will open today for business. This take out is always clean, serving fresh delicious food and very friendly. Come out and show your support. I only found out by chance. I would call occasionally to see if they were back and yesterday the owner picked up. I was so happy to hear her voice and know that they were all safe, healthy and happy to open today. I have not eaten Chinese food since they closed, I am ready for tonight! Truthfully I have not eaten here so I hesitate to leave a review but I just attempted to place an order, hoping to find our new local spot & I was shocked by the prices. We're pretty easy going & don't typically think too much of prices but I ordered 3 items & was told 52+$. I had to ask for the itemized prices because I was so surprised. One large general tso's chicken was more than 20$ & 2 other items were 15 each. I apologized & canceled the order. I was super excited to come to this place, since I've very seldom seen an establishment get 5 stars. I came with a friend and told her that the food was supposed to be excellent here..... I spoke too soon. While it wasn't terrible, it was average, at best. I ordered the shrimp and broccoli in garlic sauce and it probably had the least amount of favor in many other places that I've tried. I can tell you that the broccoli and the shrimp seemed really fresh and of good quality but the flavor was just blah. The fried rice was awful. My family has been going to China Cafe ever since I can remember. They even know my mom by name"Betty", And honestly I don't think I've ever had better Chinese food anywhere else. Everything is amazing, from the vegetable lomain to the spare ribs, pork dumplings, chicken wings, general tsaos and even the simple things like the pfr. Whenever I go on vacation for lengths of time or just go on a health kick and try to stay away(as hard as that is), as soon as I take that first bite I feel like I'm home again. I tried a vegetable dish that turned out to be 99% something that could've been cabbage, hard to say, in a sauce that tasted like plain soy sauce with a lot of cornstarch or flour thickener and not much else. I like the food but not the attitude of the staff. I was waiting in line to order and was told to wait while another person (who was behind me) was served. This isn't the first time this has happened. You also notice a huge difference in the way they talk to you- super friendly for white folk, okay for North asian folk- and downright rude for people of color. Our favorite Chinese takeout place. Everything is consistently good. The meat is better quality than most Chinese takeout places. We love the pork fried rice, chicken and snow peas, curry chicken, and sweet and sour chicken. They are on top of their game. Did some take out a while ago. The general tsao's wasn't too sweet and the sauce was very sticky. Not what I am used to, but still very good. The egg roll was perfect and the spare ribs were very tasty. My wife especially liked the vegetable lo mein. Obviously, we got a bunch of food, but they said 10 minutes to pick up. I only had to wait 3-4 to get all my food, and they gave me a free 2 liter. I'd definitely go back here... shame they don't deliver to Metuchen. read more

I'd give them a 4 1/2 stars. Definitely would order from them again. Just had the Shrimp with mixed vegetables and a shrimp egg roll. The shrimp were quite large (16-20 count probably) in the entree and the vegetables were very fresh (no canned mushrooms thank goodness). Very good portion size certainly enough for two normal people. The brown sauce was a little thin but that's ok by me since that's less cornstarch so a bit more calorie friendly. The egg roll was also large. Sure it had mostly cabbage but there were actually decent sized pieces of shrimp in there. I also ordered the hot and sour soup but am way too full to have it now.
