China Ocean at this location has been my go to for Chinese take out for years. It is a typical no frills basic food restaurant with very consistent offerings. The price point is very good, service speedy, delivery quick and always hot and just prepared. Sometimes I just want won ton soup or fried wonton. Othertimes we go with curry chow mei fun or one of the generous combo plates. I have never dined in but the dining room is clean and plenty of seating. The food was almost below average. I had General Tso chicken dinner platter, hot n sour soup, and four fried chicken wings. The hot n soup soup was surprisingly good in taste but the texture is too thick not soupy. The General tso chicken was subpar - the meat was a bit chewy like it was double fried. The chicken wings was also average but a bit greasy. Like any other Chinese take out the service was not friendly, the lady at front counter seem tired and mopey. The place smelled like burnt grease and I came out with smelling like it. This was my second time trying this place and had an average experience. Cheap Chinese takeout but this would definitely not be my first choice. And most likely my last visit. read more

The food has really gone all the way downhill.... over the last few years and I've been a loyal regular coming out of my way from 2 towns over. But the handful of times the chicken wings have been fried spoiled and I use to enjo a good fried rice or stir fry dish which started being over cooked and tasteless and then the wonton soup would just be dark water and dumplings. So sadly enough I tried to verbally bring it up very casually and got no where.... so I am parting ways for good. Somethings are better off in the past and left there. The previous owner always had everything delicious I miss them, almost been a decade ago. Anyway I will stick to my own Wok cooking at home and save my coins. Close to the hotel we stayed at. Standard Chinese menu. The wonton soup was tasty. I liked the eggrolls. The sesame chicken was good. The beef lo mein was good also. A few tables for eating in the restaurant. The sweet and sour chicken had small pieces of chicken but the chicken that was in it was really good. The lady that took our order was friendly. We were hungry for some chow mein and fried rice, we knew that restaurants are closed to dine in due to the pandemic, so we phoned a few, getting the usual "Take out only". We called The China Ocean and a women answered, we asked if they were open for dine in, she consulted someone and asked how many? I replied two, she said yes that's ok. We drove over there, entered and the woman didnt greet us, or otherwise aknowledge our presence, we sat down at a booth and she finally curtly said "Menu's over there" and pointed to a table, nothing else, not even would you like a glass of water? I watched them take a container out of the refrigerator and microwave my rice , then watched a guy come from around the corner open a cabin take a scoop out of a pot throw it in the wok for 30 seconds and pour it on top of the rice. Just tried their $4.75 lunch Gen. Tso's lunch combo and wasn't blown away by it. Don't get me wrong, it was cheap and filling but I'm not sure they deserve the four star rating on Yelp. I mean the pork fried rice had literally three (and yes I counted them because I had to dig around to find them) tiny pieces of pork and the GT and egg roll were just oily. I would honestly rate their food 2.5 stars but bumped them up another half star because of their reasonable prices. That being said, if you live nearer to CNU, Asian Grill has a $4.50 GT combo of slightly better quality (although admittedly maybe only half a star better) BUT they give you a LOT more food. read more

China Ocean is on our short list for local cheap Chinese takeout for a reason: $21.99 Family meal deal. Pick any 4 items and they are large and tasty! We're tried a variety and have been happy with all the options. They've even been good with specific requests to leave out ingredients. Not happy with the spring rolls. They were so greasy that you could press it and grease just poured out. Not sure what happened. But this is the 2nd time I've had them like that. This place use to be better than that. This is my last time ordering from them. Something has changed and I think they need to regroup and figure out what went wrong and make it better. read more

So while here in Virginia, if we felt like having chinese food, we usually order here. At first I thought it was cheap...I was fooled by their buy three, get one free type of thing. Then I started to think about it's super pricey for an entree and a side compared to California's chinese food. There, you can get a main entree and two sides for five or six bucks. Don't judge this place by being an ordinary, hole in the wall, strip mall Chinese restaurant, sometimes those are the best. This is not one of those times. Instead judge it by the poor quality food. I had the beef with broccoli and my wife had the lemon chicken. My dish was bland and gooey, while my wife's lemon chicken was just plain yucky. Everything tasted wholesale bought (as in they went to a wholesale club, and didn't get the ingredients delivered by Sysco or McClanes). We also ordered a tea and lemonade which tasted like sugar water with a pack of crystal light thrown in, so sweet it literally made me sick. Food was prepared quickly and staff is kind. Order of vegetable fried rice contained a plentiful variety of veggies and was very satisfying, vegetables were very fresh! The order of pork fried rice contained a well proportioned ratio of meat and onion also. Would recommend based on this, looking forward to trying some other items. China Ocean is the best Chinese Restaurant in Newport News!!!! I seriously can't fathom how anyone could think otherwise.. I've tried many different meals on the menu and everything is always fresh, hot and 5-star delicious!!!! Their packaging and containers are NEAT, very MODERN, and CLEAN-- no grease, no stains!! They are generous with the portions and sauces!! The delivery is super fast and they always give clean napkins and plastic ware. The Lo Mein is to die for, the General Tso's chicken, the Chicken w/ Garlic Sauce, the fried rice just to name a FEW!! Even the egg rolls are perfect!! In a world of ordinary food, China Ocean stands out. China Ocean takes what are Asian standbys like Lemon Chicken, Sweet & Sour Shrimp, Pork Fried Rice and utterly removes any semblance of flavor. I can say only that they're consistent...it was all bad, the sweet &sour shrimp was missing the liquid and the shrimp had been fried to the point of desiccation. The lemon chicken had a great lemon aroma and plenty of lemon slices, just NO lemon flavor. Even soy sauce couldn't help the fried rice find a flavor profile. The shrimp rolls which were obviously factory made and fried in the kitchen were the saving grace?
