It was a rainy day, so my friend Chloe and I decided pho was the perfect choice. I already had my mind set on pho when I walked in, but I noticed the Vietnamese Hue Style Beef Noodle Soup (Bún Bò Huế) on the menu and had to try it. The pork knuckles were there. The color of the broth looked right but there wasn't any depth of flavor in the broth. It was watery with some salt at best. Let's find out how the visit went. We were greeted by staff once we walked inside and got seated immediately. They were half filled with customers on a non-busy afternoon. The vibe itself was pretty chilled. Inside, it was a bit warm, but temps got hot outside so it was beyond our control. After a few minutes, we were ready to place orders. For apps, I selected our usual: Hoanh Thanh Chien (fried wontons) with chili sauce. Just like many times, they were cooked perfectly and tasted great. For my main course, I selected their Bun Ga Thit Nuong (grilled chicken) bun dish with each ingredient listed. The protein was grilled perfectly and the bowl itself was very good. It's a casual spot. We ordered the chicken salad, spring rolls, and pho (blanking on which we ordered, but I believe it was a flank one). The pho stole the show. Its flavors were so delicious. I highly recommend ordering a large bowl to share because it's big enough for two and a great price. They will give you separate bowls if you ask. The chicken salad wasn't for me, there was a specific ingredient I wasn't a fan of, but my friend really liked it. She found it refreshing. We both enjoyed our spring rolls. She got a foam coffee and liked it too. One of my big indicators of food being really good is when I can't stop eating it even after I'm full. I had been here last time and wasn't a fan of their banh mi but their bun Bo hue is really good! It's the best out of the places I've tried on the peninsula and also very affordable. The egg rolls were solid and my partner got com Bo nuong (rice and grill beef). The beef was well seasoned and the closest to how my mom seasons her grilled meats. I wish the bun Bo hue had the traditional toppings of cabbage rather than them using pho toppings but the flavor of the soup makes up for it. There also wasn't a lot of meat but they did have a lot of meat variety which I enjoyed. Had the large pho with round steak, brisket,, and flank. Quality and quantity of meats were seriously lacking.

This is based on a takeout order. I ordered one large chicken Pho, Vietnamese chicken salad, and a bahn mi sandwich. The broth was put separately in a 32 oz container. It was filled 3 quarters of the way. The vermicelli noodles, cilantro, shredded chicken, and sliced limes were put into their own sections in a styrofoam box. The chicken was tough and not tender. However, the broth was hot and flavorful which softened the meat. Once the noodles, cilantro, and squeeze of lime was mixed into the broth it was wonderful. The Vietnamese chicken salad was good as well. I felt there was a heavy hand of fish sauce in the dressing. The bread on the bahn mi was stale, but the grilled chicken was nicely marinated and grilled. There was taste of some sweetness in the sauce. The cilantro, julienne carrots, and cucumber with mayo always make these combinations my favorite. I always love the hits of heat so you can requests some jalapeños. I came with a good friend, looking to try something new. We then decided on simple fries for the appetizer along with fried wontons. The fries were great, good amount of salt and crisp. The fried wontons were perfectly golden crispy and came with a sweet chili sauce. The wontons were great and gave us hope until our pho quickly arrived. We both decided to order the shrimp noodle soup/ Phở Tôm. It came hot and steamy which excited us, but the smell did not. It smelled of onions, which you can see visibly in the picture. After observing we both took a taste of the noodles and immediately reached for the sauces on the table to better it. After adding more sauces on sauces, we were sure that it just wasn't meant for us. The pho was very displeasing and all we could taste were the onions. Pho 83 (P83) might just be my favorite Vietnamese spot in CoVA so far! I've been there twice now and both visits have been consistent in both the quality of eats and service. The only thing I'm sad about is that it's on the Peninsula...so far away from home. Waaaaah...but the drive is worth it! - TLC - The service is great! I've had different staff members both visits, but both times have been super helpful and friendly. I dined with my kids the first time and the individual saw me split the pho into two bowls and they came over and kindly let me know that next time, I should just ask and they'll split it in the kitchen! Appreciate the heads up and noted! - Noms - Vietnamese iced coffee - I always ask for extra condensed milk everywhere I go, because ya know, I'm a sweet person LOL. P83's is strong and not diluted. YUM! It was great for my drive back home. Fresh rolls - has a nice slice of pork and shrimp with the noodles and cucumber. It's always rolled well and the rice paper wrapper is supple and not dried out, an indication that it was freshly rolled to order. Their peanut sauce is more on the peanut butter-y side than the combo of PB and hoisin, just FYI. Still delicious, just not what I am used to. Pho tai nam gau - Spot on! I just LOVE their broth. I always take a good slurp before I squeeze in the sriracha. The noodles are just perfect and most importantly, I alway check the bean sprouts/Thai basil/lime/jalapeno plate. All the dressings were fresh and not gray/black or wilted. This is usually related to the turnaround of the restaurant and P83 was somewhat busy, so they probably go through it quick, hence keeping it fresh! On my second, recent visit, my friend got the rice vermicelli noodles (bun dishes) and everything was great. She got the triple combo meat (chicken, beef, pork with fried spring rolls) and it was yum! Bun dishes are usually my second go-to! I'd get that next time if I'm not in the mood for pho. Lastly, the icing on the cake, is the price. I'm actually surprised that they are still able to keep their prices pretty low as compared to the way the world is headed or already is. The other day, I paid almost $9 for a latte and you can still get a small bowl of pho tai nam gau at P83 for under $9, just as a comparison. Totally not complaining! Our server literally had us sitting at our table for 10 minutes before she came up to us. She was bussing tables and checking on other tables before even saying hello and taking our drink orders. I had to say "Excuse me, do you know where our server is?" She said, "I'll be with you in a moment" and continued to buss the table. She didn't check on us and didn't refill our drinks. I'm writing an updated review because I find out P12 is my new favorite Pho in Pho 83. P12 comes with eye round steak, brisket and tendon. The broth is still full of flavor and authentic, and the spring roll and egg roll are fresh and delicious. The Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk is also a must-get. It is strong and roasty so watch out if you don't like strong coffee. The setting of the coffee is authentic as they put the ground coffee and water into a specialized coffee filter, which is placed on top of a glass that has condensed milk in it. It takes some time for all the coffee to drip into the glass but that also makes it good, and it's interesting! (Which also gives you a reminder that you might wanna get a water while waiting for the coffee's done) The staff are friendly and helpful. They can be very busy during lunch but they're trying their best to hand out food and provide services as quick as they can. Pho 83 also feel like home as I see many regulars coming in, and the staff knows what they want before the customers even had to say anything! I try to come here once a month since I live in Virginia Beach, but sometimes I HAVE TO come here more than once because I can't find any other Pho place in Hampton Roads that can compete with Pho 83. I've made friends with a few of the servers to the point they put my order in when they see me walking up. Or they asked about my kid work regula conversation. Next visit solo had to wait a long time for a clean table which is ok. Told waitress i knew what i wanted crab ragoons and a large p6 no onion, a different person dropped it off with onion. I immediately said oh no i didn't want onion and her response was do u want another bowl so u can take them out. Nope. The waitress that took my order intervened and said it was kitchen bc she told them no onion. Got the replacement and it was full f cilantro like a handful. I just took it off and moved on. During this visit they were yelling across the packed restaurant about how Eric or Aron might have gotten fired or quit while he was in Maryland bc he lost his phone. My most recent visit Friday i called in order the same thing to go. Get home box full of onions and bean sprouts no noodles at all. How do u forget the noodles? This used to be our favorite Vietnamese restaurant, but it appears to have been renovated and is under new management. They have a new drink menu, but I ordered my standard brown sugar boba. It was tasty but a little too sweet, and boba were a little soft rather than chewy. I also ordered papaya salad and some chicken banh mi. The chicken does not have as good a lemongrass flavor as in the past. and the bread was huge and somewhat tougher than it used to be. I haven't tried the pho yet (since the weather is still hot), but I'm worried that the broth will not be as good as it used to be.
